Happy New Year

Dez 30 2009, 20h07

Here at Play/Rec we would like to spend these last days of the year to look back at what has happened at Play/Rec in 2009 and what we can expect to happen in 2010.

What happened in Play/Rec in 2009

Back from the Grave
The main event of 2009 was that Play/Rec after a yearlong break decided to pick up the pieces and start working on a few releases. The reason for the long break was that our energy had been drained due to a way too busy spring of 2008. And when Lack decided to stop in the fall of 2008 we were left with a bit of despair followed by a growing disbelief in the whole music industry as such. We needed new projects to bring new energy to the label but had a hard time finding something that we that we all believed in. But we found those projects! The energy came back and in the fall of 2009 we re-found and dusted off our original vision to make good music heard.

Marvins Revolt joins the label
On November 2nd we released Marvins Revolt 3rd album "Patrolling the Heights". The album is absolutely fantastic and it has been such a pleasure working with the band. After the release, Marvins Revolt went on a 6 weeks tour of Europe while reviews started ticking in:
"Third time's the charm. Marvins Revolt strikes a perfect bulls eye...The highlights nearly stumble on top of each other...", Soundvenue (DK)
"The underground reaches new heights.", Ekstra Bladet (DK)
"Pretentious, but not pompous; intelligent, yet intense; pop, yet progressive. In fact, this is the kind of band all those Mew apologists should be digging... ...All you people should be digging this band, the indie rockers, the math rockers, the emos, the post-hardcore crowd.", Lowcut (DK)
"Clear, sharp and well-defined.", Berlingske Tidende (DK)
"Marvins Revolt gives us songs to dance to, to sing along to, to think about life to and to make us happy - its pure great music that reveals new fun elements day by day.", Oneinabillion (DE)
"Patrolling The Heights" is in fact a rock album in the best sense: dense and powerful sound with the right mix of melody and a bit of a noisy approach... ...Modern, innovative and highly frictional rock. As simple as it can sometimes be.", Life Sounds Real (DE)

Adam McCormack collects his Home Recordings
In December Play/Rec added yet another name to the roster: Adam McCormack. We came across a CD by Adam in 2007 and instantly fell in love with his songs and his lo-fi home recordings. Sometime in the beginning of 2009 Adams hard disk holding all his recordings was deleted. Hearing that Adams´ production was lost, we at Play/Rec realised that his songs were more than "just" demos. The thought of losing Adams´ production from the last four years was almost unbearable. So together with Adam we decided to track down as many of the lost demos as possible and get them documented. We managed to collect 24 songs all recorded in the period 2006 to 2009 .The recordings are of questionable quality, as are the MP3´s. But the songs have that certain "something" and we felt they had to be documented. In December we shared this music with you. Every day a new song was streamed from the 1st till the 24th of December. Every 6th day the songs were gathered on a Digital EP called "Home Recordings 2006-2009: Part 1-4"

But all this is history. Now for the real news...

What can you expect from Play/Rec in 2010

We have a few new releases coming up.

Menfolk releases the Beast
First off we are really thrilled to say that Menfolk will be releasing their next album on Play/Rec this spring. The album will be the follow-up to the fantastic album "Colossus" from 2005. Once again Menfolk have decided to bring the recording gear to a deserted place and record the album in a non-studio environment. This time the recordings have taken place in Villa Fjordhøj and Solhuset. Menfolks own Per Chnöeldh have been in charge of producing and recording the album together with Jakob Reichert Nielsen(ex-Lack). Jakob has also been in charge of mixing the 10 tracks and very soon these tracks will be handled over to Bob Weston (Shellac, Mission of Burma etc.) who will be mastering the album. All in all this amounts to pretty much the same team who did such an incredible job on the Lack "Saturate Every Atom" album! The new Menfolk album also has a name: "beast one / man nil".

Trust makes their debut
In June we will be releasing the debut album by trust (dk). The album will be recorded in the beginning of 2010 and as with Menfolk, Jakob Reichert Nielsen will be a really important part of the recording process, since he will be recording, mixing and producing the album. Trust already has one 7" single out and yet another 7”, entitled "Mythic Maps" is set for release in early 2010 by our friends in the label Red Tape.

Secrets
Besides the above mentioned releases we are also working on a few more projects that we still can't tell you about. The only thing we can say is that if everything goes according to plan - then 2010 is going to be an amazing year for Play/Rec.

Tours
Some tours are also planed. In January Marvins Revolt will be returning to Japan for another tour of this great country. trust (dk) has also a tour of Europe lined up and we bet that a lot more shows will come along as the year passes.

Happy New Year to all of you.
