• A passionate plea

    Jul 29 2012, 11h33 por musinum

I am sending this out to all groups to which I belong. It is not about music, but it is about the world we all live in. It's aimed particularly at my American friends and co-members, but because of America's unique position in the world, it affects everyone and the kind of world we'll all be living in for a long time.

Group leaders, it's up to you whether you treat this as spam, or post it. I try my best never to spam, but I feel so strongly about this that I'm willing to take the chance.

I hope that as artists and appreciators of music and other arts, and as people who think and feel for themselves, the majority of us here can appreciate the historic importance of Barack Obama's election to the American Presidency, and the efforts he continues to make (against a very entrenched opposition who represent the interests of the rich and powerful) to make life more livable for the ordinary citizens of the United States and for the rest of the world as well.

Perhaps some of us who cheered his election four years ago are disappointed that he has not been able to completely transform the world in the ways we had imagined, but as someone who has been involved in social causes for half a century, I can tell you that nothing comes quickly or easily. What is important is the fight and the day-to-day effort.

I expect that a number of you see the world in exactly the opposite terms, and that an even larger number are not involved in politics and perhaps haen't given a lot of thought to the upsoming election. (I'm speaking primarily to the Americans among you here. Every country has its own issues and its own struggles, and there are brave and hard-working citizens in many countries fighting oppression that we Americans can scarcely imagine!) But what is at stake here is nothing less than the kind of country we will live in for many years to come.

The message of the right is that if we take care of the rich and privileged, that the crumbs that fall from their table will eventually feed the rest of us. If that doesn't seem right to you, it may be because that particular social experiment was given an extensive trial thru the Reagan administration and thru Bush father and son. The result was disaster.

What happened was exactly what you might expect when all the safeguards that were built into the system over the years to protect the rest of us from the abuses of money and power, and from greed and corruption, were systematically dismantled. The top tax rate is a small fraction of what it was fifty years ago, and we are being asked to lower it even further, at the price of cutting the services that most first-world countries take for granted: the social safety net, affordable health care, funds for education, care for the environment... the list goes on and on.

The President has manged to get a good start at pulling this country back from the cliff it was about to fall over... but we are being asked to roll back all that progress and go back to the same things that got us in this mess in the first place. It is as if arsonists have set your house on fire, and then when the firemen are attempting to fight the flames with water, suggesting that we pour on gasoline instead!

To those of my felliow Americans who feel as I do and want to help, I have set up a grassroots fundraising site with the ambitious goal of $5,000 for the Obama campaign. Any amount helps! My site is here:

Joe Frawley (b. July 4, 1971) is an experimental composer and pianist working out of New London, Connecticut whose works blur the boundary between music and sound art. By layering and juxtaposing original music with processed found sounds, field recordings, and recontextualized speech fragments, the composer creates challenging yet accessible sound assemblages bearing a hypnotic dreamlike quality. His works have been widely broadcast internationally and appear on several prominent experimental music compilation CDs, including Vibrö No. 4: Music No Music, published by Double Entendre (Paris), and Audiotron, published by Extrapool (Netherlands).
  • Preview in Florence, Italy of the short film by Alessandro Daquino for…

    Dez 2 2010, 9h32 por MirkoFait

Zer05film presents a new short film by the young director Alessandro Daquino. The , called “Sono sempre stata Chiara” (I have always been clear/Clare) deals with its theme in a modern and fascinating way.
More and more often, we hear about sexual ambiguity and sex change, but here the director talks about it in a particularly refined, subtle, original and even touching manner, digging into childhood memories, in the rapport between father and son that any one of us carries inside.

Based on a novel by Luigi Scardigli, “Dodici mesi per morire” (Twelve months to die), it is admirable for how it can, in just a few minutes, describe so much, expand the time in the listener’s mind. Yes, because this film is also to be listened to. Silences and words embroidered by a which underlines and even intersects with the story and the feelings of the characters.
Characters played by actors like Valentina Chiarugi, Italo Dall'Orto and Luigi Scardigli himself who, with the staging of Lorenzo Vannucci and under the direction of Daquino, give the best of themselves in a few expressions and lines that tell everything.

The music, as mentioned, consists of two original pieces taken from the album Just for you (record label company: Italian Way Music) by the pianist John Toso and the saxophonist Mirko Fait.

Painting dreams” and “Misunderstandings”, like this short movie, are unique through their smoothness and expressive intensity.

“Sono sempre stata Chiara”, in the end, is a refined little work of art which deserves to be seen.

SONO SEMPRE STATA CHIARA was selected for the VideoQueer 2010 award.

The preview projection of the film will take place on 2 December 2010 at 20:30 at the Odeon cinema in Florence, Italy.

  • We remember Clifford: A group for Clifford Brown

    Jun 2 2009, 13h32 por musinum

Jazz is my first love, and I've been meaning to put together a jazz group for some time, so I've finally begun assembling one:

A group devoted to the pure joy that was Brownie's horn. In a tragically short career, he left his mark forever on jazz trumpet & on the improvisor's art. Innocence & sophistication in every breath!

Here is the Artist Radio for the group, all 200 connections. It's a "Library Bot" radio; the user IRmembrClifford has been created and their library populated with the group's connections, so that playing the radio is playing the bot's library. (For more on the Library Bot concept, see The Radio Room.

  • A new kind of group... The Radio Room!

    Mar 13 2009, 8h34 por musinum

I've created 14 groups at last.fm, and a dozen artist radios to go with them, some the traditional tag radios and others the newer Library Bot radios.

I've decided to put them all together under one roof here at The Radio Room, a listening room for all the radios with descriptions and links to the associated groups.

Come to listen and sample the sounds and feelings of the groups! Hear before you join!

If you like the concept and would like to see it spread, please join The Radio Room!

After listening to the new album Just for you, someone told me: “Beautiful, I use your music to make love!” (a man), “ I love it, it’s so relaxing, I often put it when I have a bath.” (a woman) :))

So, listen to it and tell me in which occasion you like to use it…
You can also say “I’ll use your CD as a coaster for my glass of beer” :))))
