  in our time, in music as in art in general, a simple principle holds: anything goes. trash has become mainstream, and people can't distinguish between artistry and dilettantism. john cage helped us in overcoming old definitions of what music is or should be. but we didn't fill the gap yet. there is no avant-garde any more, music today is only a repetition of everything and nothing.

  Meh, compared to a lot of other music from the same time period, Pink Floyd aren't all that amazing. Nor is their music really complex at all. I'd say include all the Jazz Fusion, Electronica, and mainland Europe prog from the same time period (1970s). Of course if we're talking real organization of sound, then you want music from guys like Iannis Xenakis, Olivier Messiaen, Pierre Boulez, Toru Takemitsu, Aphex Twin, etc...
