    New image(s)?

I just discovered this Group Ring over at the Addicted to Last.fm group yesterday. I thought it was a very cool idea, and immediately went about setting up my qualifying groups.

I then pointed a friend over here. They responded that they were considering it, but weren't real fond of the image. I hope I don't offend anyone, but I agree that it could use a little spicing up, and that could lead to more groups using it.

I also think a graphic designed for the sidebar, at least for our personal profiles (if you don't want it there in group profiles), would be a good idea.

Unfortunately, I have no artistic ability.

Perhaps we have some artists here?

New pictures are a good idea. I could do some better pics, but I don't have any ideas how they should look like, and I'm more a musician then an artist.

So, if someone has any idea I (or any other member, too) could try to make them , and later we could discuss if we want to change them.
But I think the pictures should fit to the general last.fm style (colors...) somehow.

I kind of get the color thing, though an awful lot of people are using black, because they hate the pink red look. Perhaps a choice could be the answer.

I just noticed that Quotes & Sayings has their own graphics. Although a bit larger than I like, I love the look. It would be trivial to cut down the size, and even change the color to match Last.fm's color scheme(s), though.

I'm the friend _Tarkus_ mentions. I've joined and added the original image to two of my groups. I prefer the size over the style on the one at Quotes & Sayings, though that style is cool. I've yet to reinstall Paint Shop Pro on this Vista machine but I could probably come up with something sleeker.

I think the key is that the image be accessible. I do not believe it needs to be large and garish (and thereby offset any existing flow a group's overview page might already have) to be effective (I'm a little ambivalent about posting it at the top of the overview). The images remind me a bit of the old days of the Internet when I was just learning HTML and everyone and their brother made a homepage with tiled, patterned backgrounds, auto-load .wav files, and some kind of ring-or-other attached to the bottom of the page. Ah, good times. Not! ;)

Anyway, I guess if I'm added to the ring, then I haven't offended, so thanks in advance. For what it's worth, I made my avatar myself, so I'm not entirely graphically inept. I am, however, lazy as hell.

I agree with you, size matters. ;)

Even the original size, while not terribly large, might be better served being longer but not as high.

You can use your own pictures for your groups.
If the default pics don't fit to the style of your group and you have better ones I think it's great and interesting to see some other pics for the group ring.

The pictures just have to be visible (not too small...). They don't have to be on the top, but they have to be visible on the overview of your group (without scrolling). If the group is very big and has a lot of members I tolerate it, if you have to scroll a bit (like Addicted to Last.fm).

The pictures of Quotes & Sayings remind me on the ones of The Special Interest Tag Radio Collective.

    Thanks for the clarification, soadize!

You're right, those two look like the same basic graphics, with different coloring and fonts. The latter needs to update theirs, since you're no longer using a sequential order. Though I suppose "next group" could be interpreted as "next random group".

As always, thanks for your efforts. :)

Found another style, similar to the above, at Off Topic. Although a bit messy, I like the transparent background (or maybe they just made it white; I haven't checked).

Edit: They're jpegs, so they just made the background white. The compression could explain the messiness.

Yes, my images are based on hm_hallo's images used in The Special Interest Tag Radio Collective group.

I hope that those in groups Quotes & Sayings and I didn't want to fall in love, but i did it! doesn't look as messy as in Off Topic.

No, yours have much smoother edges. PNGs might be even better, to avoid all compression artifacts.

Actually... all three of them are mine, the Off Topic is so messy since it's the first one.

    Apologies and well done, adnolows.

Have you tried saving the original images in PNG format, to see if it makes a difference?

No, I haven't, I couldn't find them. I guess the PNG/JPEG problem is not so simple...the quality depend on the compresion volume chosen when the file is saved. You can have two JPEGs in totaly different quality.

But I didn't wanted to write these obvious facts here. I wanted to inform you that I've made new pictures for my Off Topic group. They are too big and letters aren't comfy to read...so it should be replaced soon, but if anybody want to use them... feel free to do it!

Yeah, I get the JPEG compression percentage thing, but for such a small image, I'd be inclined to forgo all lossy compression, and go with PNG. But if you can't find the originals, it's a moot point.

No offense, but your new images hurt my eyes. ;)

    Yeah, they should ;) ...

...but those I found in syntax_error's Quod Libet group will be better for your eyes.

Agreed - that looks very cool! In fact, when I get some time, I'll probably steal borrow that graphic for some of my own groups. :)

  • Please notice that these black glass icons have inverted order (first is Add group, then Go to next). I am too lazy to fix that, so I made completely different icons.
You can get the old ones (ZIP, contains also the source SVG). If anynone would be interested, I will release the source of the new buttons too.
I hope it would be useful and we will see some cool new buttons. ;-)

    that's true, I'm sorry. :))

  • Thank you!
Anyway, it really depends on your taste so feel really free to use and/or remix my buttons (maybe the source files will be of any use). I am still looking out for making another, I just need to get some ideas. =)
