Descrição:
An unofficial group for Wuala users.
Wuala used to be a really cool and innovative distributed storage and file sharing application. It creates a virtual disk shared among the users, where all files are distributed and encrypted. Each user can decide independently for each directory whether to keep it for himself, or allow the download to some, or all his friends, or a group of users, or every user. Plus there is tagging, and a search engine. You can use it to backup your stuff, or share with friends, or whatever else you can think of. All free.
The really innovative feature that made WUala different was that you could trade hard disk space for online space: you got 1G to start with, and you could get extra space based on how much you stayed online, and how much disk you shared, 1 to 1 if you were always online. Of course you could also choose to pay for storage instead. Another cool thing (which is still there) is that files are encrypted on your machine, so nobody can look at your data, except if you let them.
On March 19 2009 they sold to La$ie.
On Oct 4 2011 they disabled the trading feature, moving to a more traditional scheme: 2G free, pay for the rest. They kindly keep our data for one year more, then we'll have to pay or erase. See explanation and comments here.
I kinda see a pattern here, doesn't it sound familiar?
1. start cool and innovate
2. grow out of user enthusiasm
3. sell to a multinational
4. get greedy and loose it all
I have no connection to Wuala other than being a formerly happy user. I started this group to gather other wuala users on lastfm, because I thought it was such a cool thing that it deserved some publicity and because I like exchanges that do not involve money. Now that it became like pretty much any other pay-for-space service, I have no motive for doing this. I guess I'll just leave this here and forget about it. Bye.
