Know of a band that should be here? ... Then please do tell.

  • I was about to join when I realised I've only heard tracks from 2 of those bands. Would you recommend any of them to try?

Well, I only know a few of them, but here is my opinion:

Arch Enemy: 2 albums (Wages of Sin and Anthems of Rebellion) and one EP (Dead Eyes See No Future) with Angela Gossow on vocals. Excellent melodic death metal, twin-guitar madness, rather obvious connection with late Carcass (R.I.P.). The previous records are good too but don't feature Angela (not that it's a problem, anyway).

Holy Moses: German thrash metal band that released a lot of albums, all featuring Sabina Classen on vocals. Can't say I know or like them a lot, apart from a couple of songs (that I like a lot, such as Current of Death). There are MP3s on their website so you can make yourself an opinion. Their website is here. They are still active and should release a new album soon.

Crisis: Karyn Crisis has a rather peculiar approach to singing; sometimes she screams, then she growls, then she cries - that girl has a problem, but that makes the stuff very interesting. I actually like that band; I have their 4 albums (latest one: Like Sheep Led to Slaughter) and listen to them from time to time. Here is a link to their official website.

Bolt Thrower: damn, it's a long time since I listened to their albums! The girl in the band plays the bass. Bolt Thrower are among the Great Old Ones of British death metal. Slow, very heavy music, with an instantly recognisable sound. At least 8 studio albums and a few compilations.

    Suggestion

I think you can include the Irish band Cruachan in this group.
They play a mix of black & folk metal and feature more and more female vocals; 4 albums released so far (latest one: Pagan in 2004).

    New suggestion

An excellent variation on the B&B theme:
    The Project Hate MCMXCIX
The sound is definitely old-school Swedish death metal (early Entombed), with the addition of keyboards. The opposition between male death-metal vocals and 'normal' female vocals is nice, and the songs are well-written and quite complex (but not too much).
And I got my CDs ('When We Are Done, Your Flesh Will Be Ours' and 'Cybersonic Superchrist') at 2.50 EUR each from The Metal Merchant.

  • OK thanks Vincent, I've just added them. I hadn't actually heard of them before. I'll need to check them out.

    2 more bands

Dismal Euphony (not sure whether they are still active, but they made a couple of excellent albums)
Siebenbürgen (new album coming soon through Napalm Records)

    Dylath-leen

I read a very positive review of Insecure, the first album of the French band Dylath-leen ('Album of the month' in the French - of course - edition of Rock Hard). I checked their website and found a full MP3 track that sounded convincing enough for me to order the album. The music is rather aggressive but, according to the review, the styles vary on the album; one of the singers is Kathy, a girl who seems to have chosen the brutal style of Angela Gossow (Arch Enemy) or Sabina Classen (Holy Moses); another girl plays the keyboards.
Review of the album as soon as the band sends it to me.

    Re: Dylath-leen

    Quoth DrMuller:
Review of the album as soon as the band sends it to me.

Well, I have now had the opportunity to listen a couple of times to the album and I must say it's a blast! Kathy's singing alternates between low, harsh growls similar to Angela Gossow's and melodic/hysterical bouts very reminiscent of Karyn Crisis. Excellent references to say the least! I found the male singer a bit less interesting but still very good; the only problem is that nearly everything has been done in extreme male vocals, so it's rather difficult to remain original. Still, this singer is efficient enough and his French accent (not too marked fortunately) provides for a not unpleasant 'exotic' feel.
The music is very good indeed, mostly in a death metal vein with some variations. Not too experimental so it won't frighten anyone, but definitely interesting enough to warrant listening to the album with headphones. The excellent production certainly helps.
One last comment: even though it only surfaced in mainstream media last month, this album was actually recorded in 2002 and the band are currently recording its follow-up; watch this forum (or their official website) for news.

So... John, I think you can definitely include Dylath-Leen in the group's connections. And check out the mp3 on their website!

    Thx

    Hi DrMuller
    Thanks for your suggestions ;)

  • How bout Otep? http://www.otep.com

  • I thought that Otep were Metalcore? What does everyone else think?

Editado por lifesvortex em Jun 20 2005, 3h01
  • Really? Before they became mainstream people called them heavy metal, but whatever. I dont even know what metalcore is. Heh.

  • Well as you are a fan of the band then you may know if this description fits them better than I would. This isn't perfect for a definition but gives you an idea of what it is about:

Metalcore is basically a cross between Metal and Hardcore, that usually has heavy, downtuned guitars that play more "Metal" riffs than you tend to find in Hardcore, but with "shouty" Hardcore type vocals and arrangements and attitudes that tend to be more reminiscent of Hardcore than Metal. The general mood is angry, angsty and/or aggressive. Metalcore fans will officially hate me if they read that :/

Check the Group connections for this group http://www.audioscrobbler.com/group/MetalCore for the most popular Metalcore bands. Metalcore is what those bands sound like. That is almost certainly a better definition.

I don't know if the people in that group would consider Otep to be Metalcore, but it is the closest genre that I can think of to describe what the Otep songs that I have heard sound like to me.

To be connected with this group a band would have to be either Death, Thrash or Black Metal, and quite clearly so. Other metal genres that are not part of the Extreme Metal scene (like both Metalcore and Traditional Heavy Metal) are not allowed, otherwise it would start to look alot like the Female Fronted Metal group.

This group was created because there are now so many women in Melodic and Mainstream Metal that that group was proving useless for promoting or celebrating the existence of women as musicians and vocalists in the more extreme Metal genres. The bands linked to this group were outnumbered 10 to 1 there by Gothic/Power/Symphonic/Heavy etc etc Metal, which are genres that many fans of the bands linked to this group do not necessarily like, and who may even help to promotee the chauvanism that does exist in the extreme metal scene today that women in the band = gothic. It was as Astarte thread on a Metal forum that made me want to start this group after reading a series of increasingly moronic posts about Astarte being "OK I suppose... for a bunch of girls anyway" or "Black Metal? girls can't play that! Gothic shit is what girls do" (I am a bit of an Astarte fan).

  • Ok, nevermind then. Theyre not Death, Thrash or Black Metal. For some reason I either forgot what type of genres this group is about or confused it with the other two female metal groups I recently joined. Hehe, sorry about that.

Thanks for the lesson on metalcore. Is that a new genre? Cause all these genres are confusing me. Why cant metal just be metal. Anyways, that does kinda sound like Otep, but I still dont consider them metalcore cause it feels weird to think of them like that.

  • Metalcore has been around since the early 90's. Maybe before that, but definately since then. It has recently enjoyed an explosion of popularity so has started to come to alot more people's attention in the past few years.

There certainly are alot of sub-genres in Metal. It is partly a consequence of how long Metal has been around and of how far apart from each other the various genres have diverged from each other and from the original traditional Heavy metal sound and ethos. It is much the same with Rock music, which has it's own subgenres (eg Rock'n'Roll, Alternative Rock, Hard Rock, Progressive Rock, Punk, Heavy Metal etc) to differentiate bands who sound different from each other and group together bands that are similar. Death Metal and Power Metal for example really aren't the same type of music at all so having a distinction between them makes sense.

Metal does start to get a little silly with the sub-genres of the sub-genres of the sub-genres :/ and it must be admitted that Metal fans do tend to obsess over genre labels much more than Rock fans do.

Cruachan, Haggard ---> Extreme Metal!? Since when!?
This bands are Celtic / Folk Metal but nothing Extreme at all!

Aghora doesn't seem to be in the right group as well. It's plain metal! Nothing extreme there as well!

See ya! They're all bands I like, neverthless!

  • Well, I've noticed that Brooklyn Sludge/Doom act 13 wasn't included in the connections, though they really should be.
Disrupt was a Boston area Grindcore band, which used harsh female vocals, as well, though the female singer won't be found in every song, nor was she ever made a permanent member, AFAIK.

All I have in this world is my balls and my word, and I don't break 'em for no one. You understand?

  • What about doom and gothic doom bands? If they are accepted, then i suggest to add Draconian. I'm glad to see that someone recommended The Project Hate MCMXCIX, great band!
It's sad to see that there are so few a bit more 'extreme' bands with female lead vocalists.
In hardcore punk and crust there is plenty of aggressive females singing..

I've created a group for extreme and aggressive female fronted music now. Feel free to come with suggestions, and also join if it suits you. Cheers!
