Wintersun ist eine Melodic-Death-Metal-Band aus Finnland. Die Band ist das Soloprojekt des ehemaligen „Ensiferum“-Sängers und -Gitarristen Jari Mäenpää, der sich 2004 von seiner vorherigen Band trennte.
Das erste Album Wintersun entstand 2004 einzig mit Hilfe des Schlagzeugers Kai Hahto (ex-„Rotten Sound“). Bass, Gitarre, Synthesizer und Gesang wurden von Jari Mäenpää selbst produziert und aufgenommen. Um auch live auftreten zu können verpflichtete Mäenpää später noch Jukka Koskinen als Bassisten sowie Teemu Mäntysaari als zweiten Gitarristen. Er selbst übernimmt bei Liveauftritten sowohl den Gitarrenpart als auch den Gesang.
Der melodische Stil der Band ist schwer einzuordnen. Er umfasst Elemente aus Black-, Death-, Viking-, Power- und Progressiv- Metal und ist außerdem durch Folkeinflüsse geprägt. Einflüsse der vorherigen Band Jari Mäenpääs', Ensiferum, sind erkennbar. Die meist epischen Lieder weisen komplexe Strukturen auf. Der Gesang ist sowohl durch Screaming als auch durch klare, hymnenhafte Anteile geprägt.

Founded by ex-Ensiferum frontman Jari Mäenpää, Wintersun is a metal band from Finland with an array of influences ranging from power metal, folk metal, viking metal, black metal and even progressive metal (although the exact genre is debatable).
The first Wintersun album, which was self-titled, was scheduled for recording on a certain date, however the Ensiferum Europe tour was unfortunately scheduled for the same time. Jari Mäenpää was forced to choose between his booked recording time for Wintersun and Ensiferum; he chose Wintersun and was forced to leave Ensiferum behind.
The album was released on September 13, 2004 through Nuclear Blast Records.
Wintersun's self titled album was produced solely by Jari Mäenpää himself, with only a session drummer (Kai Hahto) to perform the drums and percussion. Jari performed the vocals, bass, guitars, synth and stress alone.
Wintersun also has two other players in their live shows; Teemu Mäntysaari (Imperanon) is the second guitarist and Jukka Koskinen (Norther) is the bassist. Keyboards come from the background tapes because Wintersun hasn't found a suitable keyboardist. There are lots of keyboards in the songs and Jari has said that maybe there would have to be two keyboardists in the band.
The second Wintersun album is called "Time" and was to be released in end 2006, but the schedule changed to a release in late 2007 because of delays in recording.
