Which book are you reading?

  • I just finished Sunshine by Robin McKinley and am going to start Circus of the Damned by Laurel K. Hamilton. I've also been working on rereading the Mabinogi, a collection of old Welsh tale before starting on The Mabinogion Tetralogy by Evangeline Walton.

What if the hokey pokey really is what it's all about?

I've started "His Dark Materials" by Philip Pullman. Although I've already read more than 100 pages, I still can't really decide whether I like it or not.

  • Halfway through Children of Armageddon by Terry Brooks -and loving it. Recently finished the Word and the Void series having previously read the original Shannara series about a hundred years ago. Will have to re-read it now.

Now that I've finihed it, I am sure, I liked it. ;-)

It has been a nice story with some great ideas. Unfortunately, the author has concentrated only on one single plot and doesn't tell you a lot about the world. This makes the book easy to read and eventually attractive for youths (as well as the young heroine), but there is too much violence and too much higher philosophical stuff in it to be really a children's or youth's book. Anyway, I liked it even with its flaws. Maybe, I'm going to read the other two books someday.

    For now, I've started Eragon.

    Oh, and I forgot:

I'm going on with "Siege Of Darkness". After this one I am going to leave the Forgotten Realms again and continue something else. Probably I will try out "Fevre Dream" from G.R.R. Martin. I hope that he can finish his Song Of Ice And Fire series soon.

Fevre Dream has indeed been very good. The ending takes a bit too long, he could have written all his stuff on 100 pages less than he did, but still I like his characters and his descriptions of the world and the persons.

By the way: "Der Spiegel von Kajx" has been even better, being one of my favorite fantasy books now. I liked this episodical style and the songs, poems, stories and historical notes which appeared between every two chapters. Very cool idea. 8-)

    Sandman>>The Doll"s House

  • I love Tad Williams too. I just started reading Steven Erikson's books of the Malazan and they are awesome! On par with Tad Williams and Robert Jordan. Anyone else read them?

I read quite some Tad Williams books and loved all of them. Steven Erikson and Robert Jordan, I haven't tried, yet.

I've finished Eragon and it wasn't that great, after all. The story was not bad, but lot's of stuff has been stolen from other fantasy books and Star Wars. I didn't like the "Old Language" because there is no explaination of it, other authors did much better creating an own language. And finally, there have been some logic errors. I mean, it wasn't all that bad, but this book is definately praised too much. Paolini is NOT a second Tolkien. He is just another Fantasy author, that's it.

  • You absolutely have to read the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. They are some of the best out there, I think. And, so far, the Malazan Empire books by Steven Erikson are just as good - they have some incredible magis and the whole story is amazing, really. The Robert Jordan's are such that you can't put them down for anything, however. I missed a friend's last day of freedom before jail party over them - which I have managed to apologize for and live down, but they do that to you. All you care about is continuing the story. Unfortunately, we are still waiting on book 12 and Robert Jordan is dead. Someone else is reviewing his notes to finish the series in 2009. But, don't let that stop you! They are well worth reading. And, if you read either of these authors, I'd love to hear your feedback.

I promise to try. But this year, I won't be able to read any of their books. My time is running out before the exam and I still have three books, all with more than 800 pages, lying next to my bed and awaiting my attention. I've started a book from Daniele Nadir ("Das dritte Testament" - "Lo stagno di fuoco" is the Italian original title). Starts quite nicely, some nice humor in an end-time post-apocalyptic adventure. It isn't fantasy, neither science fiction, though.

  • Is that "Das drite Testament" the same as "The Third Testament"? You have to let me know how you like the Erikson and Jordan books, when you get to them.

Yes, that's its meaning. Anyway, it doen't have any relations to this strange internet page called third testament, I think. I've read about 400 pages so far. It's getting a little bit annoying since the plot is moving very slowly. It is more like one episode after the other, nothing is really happening, somehow. And there is lots of violence, which I don't like. In "A Song Of Ice And Fire", I didn't feel like there was too much violence, but here it is everywhere and everytime.

  • I might skip that then - Das drite Testament, unless it picks up. Let me know if it does. Well, you might not like the Steven Erikson Malazan books so much then, with the violence angle. They have some brutal fighting scenes and lots of death. Still, I would recommend it. The storyline is fantastic and the death is well placed, if you know what I mean.

Well, it doesn't pick up, actually. I'm near the end now and it it's very confusing, I really don't know what the author is trying to tell me. Steven Erikson has been recommended to me by various people, so I will try it. Someday. Maybe next year.

  • Awesome! You'll definitely have to let me know how you like them. And, keep me updated if you run across any great authors in the meantime.

  • I am reading two books right now. One at work and one at home. The one at work is Hero of Ages (third in the Mistborn trilogy) by Brandon Sanderson. and the one at home is Winter's Heart by Robert Jordan.

  • I´m reading Mirror Time by Wolfgang and Heike hohlbein

I tried to laugh about it, hiding the tears in my eyes

I'm now reading "The Blade Itself" by Joe Ambercrombie (or rather the German translation of it). I've already done a few hundred pages and it's great! Very nice characters and nice humor seem to make this book very good. If it keeps up, it will be something nearly as fantastic as Martin's "Song Of Ice And Fire". Nearly.

  • How is the Mistborn trilogy? Who would you compare Brandon Sanderson to?

It has been awesome! Very, very nice! The author does not only create a great world with many different characters, but he also manages to cast a smile on your face again and again. I've already continued with the sequel and I can HIGHLY recommend the books to anyone who liked "A Song Of Ice And Fire" or who is generally interested in fantasy, that doesn't paint in black and white. And the best about it: As far as I know, it is a trilogy and all three books are already availible, so there won't be any time of waiting for a sequel! If you've got nothing to read right now - go and get it!

edit: There is indeed one flaw: There is no map in this book. You will have to imagine all the countrys, landscapes, distances and borders.

I just finished 'Sluga Bozy' (I can translate it as 'Gods Servant?) by Jacek Piekara ;) and now I try to hunt third part of "Oko Jelenia" ("Stags eye") trilogy by Pilipiuk. Both are polish writers :)

The second book of Ambercrombie's First Law saga has been even better than the first. I'm now reading the third one and hoping for the fourth to be availible soon. Really great fantasy. :-)

    Night Watch - Terry Pratchett :}

Don’t kill the dream - execute it!
  • Just finished The Gypsy Morph by Terry Brooks - it could have been better, lots of irrelevant filler material, but it was nice to finally read about the end of the world that gave the Shannara series it's starting point.

in flimsy nightgowns, barefoot she dances in the rain, yeah, yeah
