    Next favourite group

I know, last.fm is an excellent tool to find that out, but maybe you can still post here which group or artist is your favourite next to Genesis. Maybe we do not count those who are or were members of the band Genesis.
    So, for me, it's then

    Yes

(BTW, my personal charts are not truely reflecting my listening habits, as last.fm's server isn't able to handle the load, so there is quite a backlog, interestingly only with some artists. Still, "Yes" wouldn't appear further up, I just don't have so many records - still need to buy some).

It's a either The Beatles or Yes.

  • Other favourite bands of mine are Songs: Ohia (well, anything by and with Jason Molina really) and Tool.

    Porcupine Tree and Marillion

I don't have much Genesis on my last.fm chart, since I only have their (those I have, at least) albums on vinyl and not ripped to my PC... planning on buying some of their albums on Cd, though (can't seem to find the foxtrot LP...)

  • Mine can be seen in these charts...
    Radiohead

See my profile: Van Der Graaf Generator, Pink Floyd are the two main contenders.

I'm now in the process of discovering Peter Hammill's solo material. Still need to get 36 albums of him before my collection is complete.

  • Yes, Coil, Jandek, and Einstürzende Neubauten

Hi Hector, welcome. I've never heard of "Einstürzende Neubauten" (I'm German). Is it a prog rock band?

  • They're German all right, but not a prog group. They're an industrial band who formed in 1980

Well I listen to other prog styles: progressive folk (Mike Oldfield - among others - is that for me - not symphonic like some reckon), Progressive metal, jazz rock/fusion. But DrMartinus I saw your shoutbox about Gentle Giant and your playlist doesn't show signs of "acquiring the taste"(!). My recommendations (I'm myself quite new to GG - a very underrated band) are to start with "Octopus", eventually try "In A Glass House", by many considered their best studio album - or "Playing The Fool" if you like live recordings.

NB: PG didn't figure as you requested him to be left out of this discussion ;-)

Simple Minds and Marillion, have some classic tracks and when i saw them live they were awesome.

  • Machinae Supremacy, of course. Genesis aren't my favourite. I like only the albums with Peter Gabriel.

  • Jethro Tull, The Doors and some other artists

    Yes!

    The path is clear
    Though no eyes can see
The course laid down long before.
And so with gods and men
The sheep remain inside their pen,
Though many times they've seen the way to leave.

  • A band....either U2, Nickelback, or The Beatles.

A line is a dot that went for a walk
  • David Bowie and Underworld are tops. I have a lot of faves. :)

  • Marillion
    Dream Theater
    Rush
    Yes
    Threshold
    Pink Floyd

Marillion and Dream Theater are my top two besides Genesis at the moment, but I've just discovered Rush in a big way, and Threshold are definately worthy of further investigation. Yes' reputation speaks for itself really, same with Pink Floyd.

  • Rush or The Police.
