Well, my contact with Genesis was due my father being a Genesis/Phil Collins himself. I can't tell exactly, I was too young. I only knew Genesis with Peter like last year. I knew Phil (and Genesis) AND Peter Gabriel solo, not they all together. First record I listened with Peter on vocals was TLLDOB. SEBTP is my favourite Genesis record nowadays.

    Hooked on Genesis

My Genesis addiction started in the late 80's when my Dad bought Phil Collin's Face Value on CD. I listened to that album constantly and wanted more. I bought "No Jacket Required" and "But Seriously..." shortly after and love them as well. When 1992 came around and "I Can't Dance" was released I bought that and started looking for more. "Invisible Touch" was purchased and I was very happy. It wasn't until later, when I was in my senior year in college that I listened to "Wind and Wuthering". I had attempted to listen to the more progressive stuff they had come with before but hadn't really liked it too more. I assume my tastes had to mature and mellow. Fortunately, I was in a place to appreciate this album and quickly purchased a copy for myself. I also bought "Trick of the Tail" and "Selling England by the pound". Since then, I've been trying to complete my collection with additions of "Abacab", "Foxtrot", "Nursery Cryme", "And Then There Were Three" and "Duke". I'm still missing "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" and a few others but I'm hoping those come out in the remastered versions I've seen. I've contemplated purchasing some of these but since they go for $16.99 US it's an expensive endeavor to repurchase them all over again for the remastered versions.

I found Genesis in 1982. I was 15 then. I actually found Peter Gabriel first. Actually 1982 was an awesome year musically. The Dreaming by Kate Bush had also just come out. I heard the song Shock the Monkey and it just blew me away. I had to get Peter Gabriels fourth solo album and learn about his music. So I sent a post order (i lived in a place with no music shops) to a music store ordering Peter Gabriels IV, I, And Selling England by The Pound and A Trick of the tail by Genesis. It has been a "love affair" ever since.

    *bump*

Last year I saw them play "Land Of Confusion" when inducted into the rock n' roll hall of fame.

So I borrowed my brother's Genesis platinum collection and loved every track, still do :)

Not quite as epic or extensive as some of yours, but a beginning's a beginning!

  • I believe the first time i heard Genesis was in 1999, i used to go to a record store near my school and the owner would be constantly playing Lamb Lies down or Foxtrot.I already liked Yes, ELP, King Crimson then so Genesis seemed to be the next step.
My first album was Selling England by The Pound.I had no idea who Peter Gabriel was or Collins, When you´re 13 years old you only care about the music.
Selling was a kind of a milestone for me because it changed my perception of music and triggered a series of events that would lead me to buy my first instrument and start playing music.
I used to listen to Genesis day and night, eventually i started to listen to Jazz and other rock genres and got away from Prog.
It´s interesting how life is a never ending spiral, you keep repeating yourself and going through similar situations than those you experienced in the past, but i never feels the same, our perception is changed.
Recently i discovered Marillion which i had never payed any attention and their music kind of got me "hooked" on Genesis again.

A couple of years ago I had a great art teacher, who believed that music stimulated us to work. However, there was the problem that ipods were banned from the school and he'd get hell from the headteacher if he let us put them on. Each period he shoved on different CD's of older bands that I'd heard of before and liked such as Rush, Queen, and Pearl Jam. One day I found myself subconciously tapping to a catchy riff. I listened to the next song, and it was a kind of mystical song with piano and a singer sounding suspiciously like Phil Collins. After inquiry I found the songs were 'Keep it dark' and 'A Trick of the Tail' and that it was actually Phil Collins in a band called genesis. After that I listened to the Phil era stuff, and then opened the up a whole new treasure chest that was the Gabriel era. Been hooked ever since.

I had my first contact with Genesis when my older brother bought a combined tape recorder and LP-player from a friend of him. Together with this music machine, there were some LP-records which my brother didn’t like. Both my brother and his friends where more into Disco, but as I was an open minded pre teenager with no money, I started to listen to the attached records. Really soon I was hooked by one of them. I loved this record and I played it again and again. Sometimes when I nowadays listen to this record, my mind jumps back to the child room where the music exploration and sensations started for me… The record was A Trick of the Tail and the year was 1976…

    Possunt nec posse videntur
  • When I was probably 7 or 8 I used to go through my parents CDs and look for ones that interested me. They had 'We Can't Dance" and I had heard the single from that album on the radio. I kind of liked the CD.

Then I found a video tape in my parent's stuff with "Genesis- The Mama Tour" written on it. I had already learned to love a Hall & Oats live video my parents had so I popped it in and watched it. I loved it and watched it over and over throughout my childhood.

Freshman year, it came time to get my dad a Christmas present, so I got him the Self-titled album because I knew he liked the songs on the Mama tour video. I was curious about other Genesis albums and bought "Foxtrot." I became fairly obsessed and listened to it over and over.

Since then my friends and I have explored all the albums and they are my favorite band.

  • Way back in 1977 at the age of 17 I worked at the Tesco store in Gravesend, Kent and toward the end of the year I was placed in the hi-fi section and we had to test the music centres we sold to make sure they worked (most of those we sold were Amstrad and they had a ridiculous failure rate at that time so we had to assemble and test every one before the customer took it away) One of the tapes we had to test with was the first cassette from Seconds Out and I discovered the wonder that is Firth Of Fifth - I remember listening to Steve's Guitar solo and being totally blown away! I also loved Robbery Assault & battery for the fun keyboard solos in that.

So I saved up my money and bought Trick of the Tail and then Lamb Lies Down. Now I wasn't very musically sophisticated at the time and did not like The Lamb so took it back to the shop claiming it was scratched and skipping. In its place I got Selling England and was much happier! Of course a year or so later I bought The Lamb again and realised what a marvellous creation it was.

The next summer, a friend told me about Genesis at Knebworth, so I had to go and was sorely disappointed that Steve Hackett wasn't playing guitar, so it sorta spoiled it. Since then I've seen the 80s Genesis twice (1982 and 2007) and was at Six of the Best at Milton Keynes in 1982 and there was Steve on stage at the encore! Marvellous. Since those days I've seen Steve live um, many times and he never disappoints! Wish the same could be said of latter-day Genesis!

I was Army, stationed in Germany in the mid 70's. In the barracks I listened to my friends Genesis album when he played it. It was alright, but I wasn't thrilled. A while later we went on maneuvers (training in the field) for about three months. When we finally returned it was a Friday and wanted to get out. We decided to go to a Genesis concert to be entertained. One of the best choices in my life! It was the "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" tour. I couldn't believe my eyes or ears! How could five artist create sounds like this live. And Peter Gabriel with his costume changes and various entry onto the stage, it was a night I'll never forget. Four days after the concert, and a raid into my savings account I bought every Genesis album they ever made up to that time. Since then I've seen them four more times in concert, once driving more then 500 miles to see them. The only sad part is I never saw them with Peter Gabriel again, although Phil Collins is great too. Needless to say I have always bought every Genesis album days after it's release.
