Genesis Reunion at hand!

  • Genesis Reunion at hand!

It's a topic many people talk about and even more hope for it to happen. Well, here it is: Genesis will perform in its old time constellation, i.e. Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Steve Hacket, Michael Rutherford and Phil Collins, for a one time super gig at the Wembley stadium on August 28, 2006.
This is brand new insider news, don't ask me where I got it. There is no indication yet as to where to get tickets, but there was a mentioning of less than 100 Pounds per ticket. I don't know if that means 99 Pounds.
There was also a mentioning that it might be a benefiz-concert, but it seems the artists can't agree on a purpose.

Stay tuned! More will come in a short while. As soon as I find a link, I'll post it here.

I sure hope you're right about this reunion, but if this one is real, it won't be in the new Wembley Stadium. It's still under construction and will be opened early 2007.

  • Strange, I was sure they said Wembley. Is there some other stadium that sounds similar in London? Or could I have mixed up the year?

No, there's only one Wembley Stadium ;-) I don't know your source, but 2006 isn't very likely.

Especially because of their statement on the official website:

Statement from the members of Genesis

    1st December 2005

In the light of current speculation about their activities, the members of the Genesis have issued the following statement through Tony Smith Personal Management:

"There are no decisions by Genesis to perform anywhere whatsoever at this time. This situation will not alter in the next twelve months."

leaves us a lot of months to hope for something good to happen in august 2007? ;-)

  • I suspect that the website isn't updated yet...

  • Wembley Stadium won't be ready, but it could be Wembley Arena.

  • That is true, But im sure we will find out more soon!

    Mr. Niceguy (Chris)
  • Ok, I'll resolve: happy April Fool's Day!

Even though I would really like the idea, particularly if they would come up with some new songs, written by the whole lot of them - it was just an April Fool's joke.

  • ho ho ho!!! damnit!

oh well, an expedition to europe to see genesis would have been next to impossible for me anyways.

  • Now that's just cruel... ;)

However, in reality, the amount of rumours that have been flying around (some reliable, others not) it seems almost inevitable that there will be another reunion show (or better, tour) eventually, probably in 2007. All the stuff which has been said by members of the band (including the denial on the website) has got people talking about it again - which is a great way for the band to measure the level of interest - and make sure everyone is looking for the announcement when it comes.

I doubt it'll be at Wembley Stadium as well - I think Pete would prefer smaller venues.

  • this was the only April Fools joke that I experienced this year.

    *sniff*

was anyone the brunt of any good jokes this year?

  • We'll see about the reunion. I don't believe any rumours until there is an official announcement, and currently there is none. You see how easily one can get fooled :-)
In fact, it's hard to imagine that there will be a reunion. But considering that so many prog-rock bands of those days experience a revival, why not Genesis, too? The problem that I see is that Peter Gabriel is involved in many, many things, unlike the others (except for Phil Collins, but I guess he hasn't so many things like PG), who could probably find a blank space in their calendar more easily.
Well, if they need money, they'll do it. :-)

Nobody seemed to bother with April Fools this year - this was the only one I had! I wondered if Dream Theater would do anything because their tour finale was 1st April - but it was filmed, so I guess they couldn't do anything too outrageous!

Who said anything about a rumour? :) Things are starting to look VERY interesting, to say the least.

During a recent interview with the Toronto Star, Collins revealed the five original members of Genesis were planning to get together again for a series of concerts. "It wouldn't be a tour in the strict sense of the word," he said, "but we would play shows in major cities around the world and Toronto would definitely be one of them."

Also, according to a Swedish newspaper Phil and Peter will be making an announcement by tomorrow (tuesday) in L.A.

"When the first list was being drawn up in the rock and roll book of Genesis, it would have been: In the beginning, God created Pink Floyd."
    -- Rick Wakeman
  • Where do you have that information from?
Ok, I just checked, I found it: http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_Type1&c=Article&cid=1147341619542. But... it's not really convincing. Phil Collins admits that it'll be a logical nightmare, and he is the only one who made this statement yet. Or can you find anything anywhere else? I'd be glad if it's true, but I'm very sceptical.

A swedish major newspaper wrote the most "factual" stuff, about the announcement today. There were no "if" or "maybe" in the article, just the date when it's actually going to happen. Sounds too good to be true, since I haven't been able to dig up anything more elsewhere, but the article is indeed convincingly written, factual if you ask me. Let's wait and see. If you're able to read swedish it's located here.

  • Well we'll find out today (or probably tomorrow in the UK due to time zone issues). I refuse to believe anything until it actually happens, although everything that we've heard over the last six months to a year suggests when not if. Here's hoping.

At the moment I'm struggling with the official Genesis forum to try and find out anything more if I can. In a few hours I might actually get onto it (server issues!), and I'll post anything interesting I find here.

Edit: Back from Genesis forums. Everyone is unsurprisingly sceptical, considering this is not the first time we've had news of an announcement. Someone contacted the Swedish newspaper to ask for the source, but no reply as of yet. (Apparently there normally is, so we might hear something yet.)

So did I, two days ago, still no reply :(

  • Well, I agree with Raelthelamb, until it happens, I don't believe it. But I'll be there, if it happens.

  • Well, May 17th and no announcement. From this point on excuse me if I only believe newspaper articles written in the past tense about this subject!

P.S. It just shows how sceptical I've become that I very nearly wrote that without checking it was true!

  • You're right. It's so unlikely that PC and PG make an announcement together about a group they both left, and besides there is not a single sign anywhere in the inside world (like official PG or Genesis sites).
So yes, only articles in the past tense, and then published on the official sites. But maybe there's still something to happen - oh, we'll never give up hope (even though I'm not such a fan of a reunion, if it's only to warm up some old songs).

Hey guys, what to think of this interview with Phil?

Nick Orlando: Will there ever be a reunion of Genesis?

Phil Collins: Yea, we all got together to talk about this last November; all five of us with Peter [Gabriel] and Steve [Hackett]. This is something we may do in a couple of years. It is very, very loose. There is certainly nothing planned. If that didn’t come together because of various people’s schedules, then maybe the three of us, me, Tony [Banks] and Mike [Rutherford] might do something. I would do it with the drop of a hat. I have been working non stop for a long, long time now. Right now, I need a break, but if you ask me in six months time…We actually got a little bit of time booked for the three of us just playing around, jamming together in October. There’s nothing fixed though!

  • "...nothing fixed... ...very, very loose... ...nothing planned..."

as before: I don't believe it until I see it (and I don't mean the interview, I mean the act!).

    Cheers!

    Aaarrrrgggghhh!!!!!!

I want old school, live, Genesis!!!!

    The path is clear
    Though no eyes can see
The course laid down long before.
And so with gods and men
The sheep remain inside their pen,
Though many times they've seen the way to leave.
