    Your favourite songs

As the Gabriel era is very different from the Phil Collins era, I suggest the following:
post up to five of your favourite songs from the Gabriel era, plus five songs from the Phil Collins era. And if you wish, add one from the Ray Wilson era...
    I'll start:

    Gabriel era:
    1. Visions of Angels (Trespass)
    2. Supper's Ready (Foxtrot)
    3. Firth of Fifth (Selling England By The Pound)
    4. Time Table (Foxtrot)
    5. For Absent Friends (Nursery Cryme)

    Phil Collins era:
    1. Driving the Last Spike (We Can't Dance)
    2. Fading Lights (We Can't Dance)
    3. Burning Rope (And Then There Were Three)
    4. One For The Vine (Wind & Wuthering)
    5. Home By The Sea

  • Gabriel era:

    1. The Battle Of Epping Forest (Selling England By The Pound)
    2. For Absent Friends (Nursery Cryme)
    3. Firth of Fifth (Selling England By The Pound)
    4. Lilywhite Lilith (The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway)
    5. Can-utility and the Coastliners (Foxtrot)

    Collins era:

*1. Afterglow* Wind and Wuthering # Man, I love this track - it really moves me.
    2. ... In That Quiet Earth (Wind and Wuthering)
    3. All In A Mouse's Night (Wind and Wuthering)
    4. Ripples (A Trick Of The Tail)
    5. Throwing It All Away (Invisible Touch)

"Wind and Wuthering" and "A Trick Of The Tail" are two great albums despite the fact that Gabriel left the band!

    Hi,

I agree, I love those two as well. For my personal history, "And Then There Were Three" is probably the most important one (of the Collins era), because it just came out when I packed my things to go and "find myself". I left everything behind. Burning Rope inspired and carried me during that time extremely.

  • Hey.

Here are my favourite songs from both eras:

    Collins Era:

    1. Man On The Corner [Live] (Genesis Archives Vol.2: 1976-1992 Disc 3)
    2. Say Its Alright Joe (..And Then There Were Three...)
    3. Invisible Touch (The Way We Walk Vol.1: The Shorts [Live])
    4. Many Too Many (..And Then There Were Three...)
    5. Hold On My Heart (Turn It On Again)

    Gabriel Era:

  • hey

k, ill try this. Even though this varies from time to time.

    Peter Gabriel
    1. The Battle of Epping Forest (Selling England by the Pound)
    2. Supper's Ready (Foxtrot)
    3. Stagnation (Trespass)
    4. The Carpet Crawlers (The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway)
    5. Time Table (Foxtrot)

    Phil Collins
    1. Blood on the Rooftops (Wind & Wuthering)
    2. Mad Man Moon (A Trick of the Tail)
    3. Robbery, Assault and Battery (A Trick of the Tail)
    4. Afterglow (Wind & Wuthering)
    5. Dance on a Volcano (A Trick of the Tail)

Personally I don't really care for the more commercial stuff, but there are a few good ones from that period also. I agree with you guys that Trick of the tail and Wind & Wuthering are superb albums despite the fact that Gabriel left. Hey, sometimes Collins sounds more like Gabriel than Gabriel himself on these. Or do I need my ears fixed?

Or do I need my ears fixed?

Yes! ;-) We can get philosophical here - is it possible that a person does not sound like himself? etc. Well, let's just say the tracks on those albums are good songs, almost in the line of olden days Genesis, and we all agree. :-)

  • I wasn't completely serious, I was just pointing out that collins sounds a lot like gabriel on some of those songs. ;)

Sure, no problem. Notice the smilies... ;-) And you are right, Collins sometimes has a similar sound, even though he misses the bite...

  • Gabriel: (very hard!)

    1. Supper's Ready
    2. The Musical Box
    3. Dancing With The Moonlit Knight
    4. In The Cage
    5. Firth Of Fifth

    Collins: (much easier!)

    1. Squonk
    2. Domino
    3. Home By The Sea
    4. Dreaming While You Sleep
    5. Eleventh Earl Of Mar

Wilson: (none of these get anywhere near the stuff on the other lists, but I still quite like them)

    1. Calling All Stations
    2. Not About Us
    3. Uncertain Weather
    4. The Dividing Line
    5. Congo

Does anybody else think John Wetton would have been good doing these songs?

I really haven't gotten too into the Phil Collins-era (except for AToTT and W&W), so I'll only do my top Gabriel-era songs:

    1. Supper's Ready (Foxtrot)
    2. Dancing With the Moonlit Knight (Selling England by the Pound)
    3. The Knife (Trespass)
    4. The Musical Box (Nursery Cryme)
    5. Frith of Fifth (Selling England)
    6. Watcher of the Skies (Foxtrot)
    7. The Cinema Show (Selling England)
    8. Time Table (Foxtrot)
    9. Back in NYC (The Lamb)
    10. In the Cage (The Lamb)

    3. Return of the Giant Hogweed (Nursery Cryme)
    4. In the Cage (The Lamb...)
    5. Firth of Fifth (Selling England...)
    6. Back in the N.Y.C. (The Lamb...)
    7. The Knife (Trespass)
    8. Dancing with the Moonlit Knight (Selling England...)
    9. Can-Utility and The Coastliners (Foxtrot)
    10. Seven Stones (Nursery Cryme)

  • My lists:

    Gabriel Era:

    2.Blood In The Rooftops(Wind&Wuthering)
3.Dance On A Volcano(A Trick Of The Tail)
    4.Domino(Invisible Touch)
    5.Driving The Last Spike(We Can't Dance)

    3. The Knife (Trespass)
    2. Firth Of Fifth (Selling England By The Pound)
    1. Chamber Of 32 Doors (The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway)

    Phil Collins:

    5. Blood On The Rooftops (Wind And Wuthering)
    4. Entangled (Trick Of The Tail)
    3. Turn It On Again (Duke)
    2. Eleventh Earl Of Mar (Wind And Wuthering)
    1. Dance On A Volcano (Trick Of The Tail)

Strangely enough, even though I prefer Peter Gabriel-era Genesis to Phil Collins-era Genesis in general I narrowly prefer my Phil Collins-era top five!

I'm educated as musicologist, wrote more thesises, among them my final thesis, (partly) about Peter Gabriel (the final was about his music videos) and I developed the idea that, Gabriel actually had to change his voice. Because his old band was still there with a guy who used to dub for him and who had refined a natural tendency to sound like him. And Gabriel wanted to leave Genesis behind and find his soul-oriented roots. So changing the vocal style would have other reasons as well, but I think, that what I pictured above, played a role. IMO he only really started to sound good again (on "3") when he quit singing like in the old days.

Well no list for now, maybe later....
