  • ...In That Quiet Earth

It's not a song. So what?

And by the way, Duchess is from Duke, not Wind & Wuthering.

the battle of the epping forest is the most underrated song ever imo.

    I concur.

  • Hmm undertated can go alot of directions underated by everyday listeners, underated by true genesis fans, lacking critical acclaim, or commercial success. anyway I would have to go with mad man moon also; still an epic Genesis song I always felt it was more accesible and user friendly. Duchess is a good call also.

Leaves you with that sort of hm feeling.
  • The entire From Genesis to Revelation. There's lot of great stuff there.

I think "White Mountain" is one of their most perfect songs, and it's the first track I'm going to blast in 5.1 when I get the 1970-75 box. And as far as I know it was never even played live after 1976. Crazy. Also "Small Talk." It's the one song on CAS that completely gels, IMO. It's poppy but bitter as hell, and it sounds like a '90s/'00s Peter Gabriel song, which to me is a good thing.
For most underrated album (at least as far as the fans go)...I'll say Genesis (1983). Lots of weird sonic details and production FX buried in that album, some of Rutherford's best guitar stuff, and it's got "Mama" and "Home by the Sea" on it for gosh sakes.

  • Agreed on "White Mountain". I love this song.

  • Wow, I just discover : From genesis to revelation a weeks ago and let me tell you that In the begining is according to me a SUPER underrated song.

I agree with Pepganzo. Trespass, as for me, is complete album (maybe too big words, but it's really good). I like every song from this album - it says everything - most underrated. And if i must pick one song, i think that would be Afterglow from W&W. I don't know your opinion about this song, but as i can see, you didn't mention Afterglow. Maybe it's not underrated, but when most of people find albums from Gabriel's era as the best in history of Genesis, that means i could find Afterglow as one of the most underrated songs.

    Eleventh Earl of Mar

  • Call All Stations

Calling All Stations by far the most underrated. It was the return of the true Genesis sound. Banks and Rutherford song writing was superb and so was Ray Wilson's singing.

My choices on most underrated song:
    "Mad Man Moon" - As good as the rest of ATotT but doesn't get mentioned as often as most of the others;
    "Burning Rope" - IMHO the best track from aTTW3;
"Riding the Scree" - viewed by some as just another filler track on TLLDoB, it has very tight instrumentation and I consider it one of the best demonstrations of how good the chemistry is between the members of the group

  • I agree with opinions that Trespass is underrated. In songs I can mention Seven Stones, my favourite track from Nursery Cryme and After the Ordeal, an instrumental masterpiece.

It's all about The Fountain Of Salmacis, from Nursery Cryme. I also like Dance On A Volcano and Wot Gorilla has an awesome drum beat.

Blood On The Rooftops is a great song too.

  • Their self entitled genesis album(circa 1983) was their best cumulitive work in my opinion. A pinnacle and peak for the band - hardly ever mentioned and supremely underated.

It made no.4 in my list, definitely their best work post 1980, Songs like Home By The Sea, Just A Job To Do, Illegal Alien, Mama and That's All are classics.

Robbery, Assault And Battery is also a fun song.

  • Tresspass y very underrated and is their best album

And Stagnation is the best song of the album, and the most of the people just remember The Knife

  • Edit: Forget what I said. Twilight Alehouse, hands down!

  • CAN-UTILITY AND THE COASTLINERS

How can someone really tell how a song is rated? Rated by who?

Well, the scrobblinglist of last fm can tell something perhaps.

I think that maybe a song is underrated by the artists themselves if they never play it live. Or is that beacuse it is hard to play? Like the lovely intro of firth of Fifth; why do they always skip it when playing the song live?

Anyhow, a song that must be underrated by the society as whole is Can-utility and the Coastliners, an absolutely fantastic composition.
It truly captures the concept of progressive rock.
Fantastic melody, constant shifts in melody themes, progressing construction instead of verse-chorus-verse-construction, advanceness and absolute sophistication, intellectuality and yet feeling.
I'm glad to find so many here have mentioned it as underrated; it really is.
If You really like progressive rock, if You really like the Gabriel Years of Genesis, or brodened, the 70's production of Genesis, and haven't noticed this song, You should go listen to it carefully. Mindfulness demanded!

I find that listeners of progressive rock often are jazz listeners also. Maybe because the genres are both often advanced, demands intellectuality and active listening.
A fantastic jazzpiece that have a similarly progressive construction, and that really rewards the listener (after 5-10 listenings, of course) is "Ogden Road" by Ralph Towner, found on his album "Diary" (the album that broke my prejudice against jazz when I was 15 years old).

You who love Can-Utility like me, listen to "Ogden Road".

Songs: Harold the Barrel, Can-Utility and the Coastliners
    Album: Trespass

This. People have explained why Can Utility is so good already so I won't dwell on it. Harold the Barrel for me was an exceptionally sad and emotional song that completely contrasts with a bouncy whimsical melody. Trespass is of course an exceptional album as well. The only other thing that I feel is worth a mention would be Time-Table. It has such beautiful piano, vocals and bass imho.

  • !

Fading Lights (We Can't Dance), imo, the most progressive track from the Genesis after-1980.

  • I'm glad to see so many mentions of Can-utility and the Coastliners, awesome bass pedals and just all round a wonderful song (gonna have to listen to it now!)

Also Man Man Moon - although my appreciation of Tony Banks has waned over the years (long story which I may write about more one day), this is a beautiful, colourful and interesting song.

  • I don't know about the album but song "The Lamia" seems to be unknown
