Do you like Phil Collins?

  • Mama onwards I could gladly skip. Too bland and poppy and not my thing, although I do own these albums, I just don't play them very often. Invisible Touch came out at the same time as "So" - no comparison!

To answer some oft the points above, I think followers of Gabriels solo career would have to admit that he has written a few pop tunes solo as well. So to say that Phil turned Genesis into a pop band is unfair as perhaps they were heading in that direction at some point (and it did take a few years for this to fully happen).

Also, perhaps some Genesis fans blame Phil for Peter leaving the band. That is also unfair. While I don't like Phil's solo stuff, the post Gabriel albums are great albums (and I'm not sure Peter's solo stuff is as strong overall, despite some very high highs).

I think Gabriels era make Genesis famous in show stages, but Phil's era is whole Genesis that everyone know and want see. Phils voice is amazing even that now is lower, but it don't matter to me. People is always loved Phil because he is normal, funny quy not like some other big stars- Phil Collins solo stuff is amazing! I prefer him growing his beard again and doing new album with genesis or himself.

well, i disagree, i think that Gabriel era was the true genesis, his live shows were so magnificent, and his albums, wow, they are really, masterpieces, the lyrics were so strong and emotive, very complex indeed.

(sorry about my english, im mexican hehe).

  • Oh brother, I don't like that people always speak about Collins as a total loser, because he isn't. I like almost all of his songs, no matter if Genesis or his solo projects. I must admit that I only know a few songs from the Gabriel era, but I can't get in that music. I'm not a fan of all the poppy radio friendly style of music, but I like the Collins Genesis.
Anyways: it's not only Collins, who changed the band's direction. They are a BAND, they all have to decide, which way they want to play and if three people decide to change to the "poppy style" and they do it together. No one's to blame for that.
I guess that many people think of Collins, when they hear the name Genesis.

why does people defend Phil Collins... damn... his songs sound like the ghostbusters soundtrack... he was a great drummer but his pop heart killed genesis...

I think it's funny how a lot of Genesis fans blame Phil Collins for the pop direction the band took after Wind & Wuthering. I guess since he's the man up front, it's easy to blame him. Last time I looked, Banks and Rutherford had a lot of songwriting credit on those albums.

Rutherford has stated that his favorite Genesis album is the Genesis "Mama" album.

Maybe Phil hypnotized them both so he could lead the pop group he always dreamed of.

Do I like Phil Collins - the original question of this thread - yes. I love everything up to ABACAB. I like half of the Mama album. After that, I'm done.

    Phil Collins

  • no offend to anyone...but phil.....

all right... im totally disagree with the ones who likes the Phil collins era with Genesis, too much commercial... Invisible touch masterpiece???? come onnnnnnnnnn... too artsy? no comments at all about that.. from 1980 to 1992 is the most commercial era..and they want only money money and more money.. but well.. this era have some songs...too good and with the reminiscent of the prog era.. but the only fact that i like the work of collins, is the master in the drum kit... he´s done a great work when gabriel left... until duke... the work still have the label "prog" and "experimental" but well.. appart of that... i really aprecciate the work of collins...

    cheers

Yes, i really like Phil, hes a great musician. I like his solo stuff and i like his work with Genesis. I never think about which Genesis was better. Sure, theres a difference between Gabriel era and Collins era Genesis, but shit....i´m a Fan.

I was on hundreds of concerts but to see Phil live was just awesome, it´s pure Party and good music. Phil concerts were the best concerts i have always seen.

    sry for my english.

Genesis was between 1969-1977. After Hackett had gone it was no longer GEnesis. It was Collinesis:))

70's Collins was pretty neat...80's Phil was another story...heh

Collins was the best when he played the Drums. Genesis with Hackett and Gabriel is my favorite period. Collins probably saved Genesis by changing directions but lost me as fan.....

  • Funny tho, with Trespass through ATTWT (except for Follow You...) I could just play the entire album(s). But after that (don't even ask about Calling All Stations! No play there!) I'd have to pick and choose which tracks are the LEAST SUCKIE-EST save for a very few tracks. I liked Phil back in his Jazz influenced period i.e. Brand X, on da drums. Don't much care for his solo stuff. Makes my skin crawl! Sorry Phil!

  • Yes, I like Phil, he's a great drummer and a very good singer (he has a better voice than Gabriel, but he can't sing in Gabriel's delicious theatrically insane manner).

But keep in mind that there are three.... er... Genesises.

One is the Canterbury/Prog classic. The other is the Gabriel-less but Hacketerized, still proggy. And the third one is the pop-oriented, Collins-led band. Good pop songs, but not THE Genesis we, ye olde people, used to love.

And about Ray Wilson, the less said, the better.

  • hum.. I like Phil, he's got this very special kind of humour and so on..
I grew up with the 80's stuff and the good old Peter-Era, for my dad is still a big fan of both eras... he would never admit that, though ;)
So.. Phil is and stays part of Genesis. That's what I think. (yet do I like Tony and Mike Better... and o'course Peter.. my god, Peter.. lovliest of 'em all ;D)

  • Phil´s Voice is amazing, i think he did a great job with genesis after Gabriel split.
I personally like the Phil Collins era and i don´t see any problem with the kind of music Genesis started to develop during his era.
Gabriel is a force of nature and nothing will ever change that, his perfomances were instantly missed when he left, still i like the "direct" rocker sound approach that Collins provided.
Lately i´ve been listening alot more to the Collins era, i like his rendition of "In the Cage" better than Gabriel´s version.

  • I don't like Phil, but I don't blame him exclusively for the band's decline. It was really the result of Gabriel and Hackett leaving. They were the two main creative forces in early Genesis. Once they were gone, Collins and the rest floundered around for a couple of albums, not really knowing what to do with themselves, before settling on chart-topping radio-friendly pap. And I don't blame them for this either, some musicians are out to play music that sells, but I am sorry they kept up use of the name of a band that had really ended years before.

I quite like Phil Collins' era as well as Gabriel's. Although I've only listened to the platinum collection of Genesis, there are some rippers of songs in all time frames. And you can't deny Phil for keeping the band together for such a long time.

Just think what you'd have without him...well, you'd have Calling All Stations D:

I'm also a fan of both artist's solo careers, hell I just like good music. I'm not particularly fussy about who's better :)

Maybe i am wrong, but i heard once that Collins, Banks and Rutherford are agree with that they needed a hit that could be played on the radio like Follow You, Follow Me, becouse in Gabriel era they were not well known for most of people and they wanted something more.

BTW. Collins is a great singer.

  • Peter Gabriel is a genious and Phil Collins a great musician. There's no comparison. The music of Peter Gabriel's era will be remembered (like beethoven music, for example) whereas music of Phil Collins' era is only good.
