  • [Swing] Connected Top Tracks 18 Oct 09

    Out 20 2009, 16h50 por IanAR

Here are 52 tracks (49 currently streamable, mostly 'full track', from 22 artists), from the top of last week's Swing group track chart. They're the tracks, from Swing's 166 connected artists, where four or more of the group's 614 members have listened, during last week.

I've tagged all the tracks swing connected top tracks 18 oct 09 (globaly here, in my library here).

Subscribers can hear them, as a PTT radio: via Flash, on the webpage or on the Last.FM player.

Please over-tag the tracks you like, to improve the global tag and help make that playable. If you'd like to comment on the artist connections, please do so -> here.

  • [31 Mar 09] Stacey Kent's Knighted!

    Abr 8 2009, 20h51 por IanAR

Way back in 2002, before this place, the collaborative filtering music discovery systems I used were Amazons' and my Yahoo! LAUNCHcast personal radio (now killed by CBS).

I think it was LAUNCHcast that turned me on to Stacey Kent's 2001 Dreamsville album and - man - Did I feel I was in on something good?! If you're not familiar with the release, I strongly suggest checking-out TocarYou're Looking At Me, TocarHushabye Mountain, TocarI've Got A Crush On You and TocarDreamsville.

For years I felt like one of the select few who knew her. When I first joined AudioScrobbler in 2005, absence of her recordings was one of the standards by which I judged the LAUNCHcast's catalog better than here.

During 2006 she became streamable and in July I tagged her as lesser known yet streamable artists which, by then prevailing standards, would've meant that she had less than 10K listeners, on Last.FM.

Over time, her notoriety's grown'n'grown and, hey hey, my girl's: topped a million plays on Last.FM (with 130K+ listeners), her Breakfast on the morning train was Grammy nominated, won British & BBC jazz awards ... and now she's been knighted! - Awarded with the medal of Knight of the French Order of Arts and Literature (Ordre des Arts et des Lettres) by Christine Albanel (French Culture Minister), during a ceremony at the Quai Branly museum in Paris. 31 March 2009

    Bravo, Stacey!

  • The New cd of Gendrickson Mena: All I missed.

    Ago 7 2008, 15h15 por MirkoFait

Produced by Rai Trade and Video Radio, is the second music work of the famous cuban trumpeter Gendrickson Mena.

Evolution of the first cd of the quintet, TocarAll I missed, is the name of a ballad written by the sax player Mirko Fait and included in the cd.
Played with fluidgeon by Gendrickson and piano by Mario Zara, is one of the most espressive song of the album.

The other songs are a great mix of energy, thanks to the rithmics of Giorgio Di Tullio, funky, thanks to the bass line of Ezio Salfa, poetry, thanks to the piano of Mario Zara, fusion, thanks to the 'Kenny Garret' style of the sax player Mauro Capitale and jazz/latin thanks to the trumpet of the leader.

  • [Direct Cinema] BBC Radio 4's Rockumentary Documentary

    Nov 13 2007, 16h48 por IanAR

Another great BBC Radio 4 reco' from Ali of Furniture Farm ...
BBC - Radio 4 - Factual - Rockumentary Rollercoaster said:
Andrew Collins explores the world of the rockumentary. With its outlandish characters, bizarre situations and concert footage, the rock world is fertile ground to the documentary film maker.

Contributors include D A Pennebaker, Albert Maysles, Susan Steinberg, Julien Temple, Ondi Timoner, Bob Smeaton and Joe Berlinger.

In brief, starting in 1965 London - with Subterranean Homesick Blues - this charts the history of the direct cinema style of rockumentary, featuring: Bob Dylan/Dont Look Back, The Rutles/Eric Idle (and some copycat outfit called The Beatles), Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, Monterey Pop Festival 1967, Grateful Dead, The Band, Janis Joplin, Spinal Tap/This Is Spinal Tap, The Rolling Stones/Gimme Shelter/Cocksucker Blues/Charlie Is My Darling, David Bowie/Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars, Woodstock, Talking Heads/David Byrne/Stop Making Sense, Sex Pistols/Malcolm McLaren/The Great Rock 'N' Roll Swindle/The Filth and The Fury, The Dandy Warhols/The Brian Jonestown Massacre/DiG!, Metallica/Some Kind of Monster and others.

All very interesting, in this age of YouTube and mobile phone video! Dave Clark Five and Madonna/Truth or Dare (aka In Bed with Madonna) are cited, in antithesis of the style, also Lily Allen, which seems odd (considering her MySpace history).

I plan to flesh this out later. I'm slapping this up quickly so y'all have a chance to catch the show, on-line (streamable for only a week, 'til 20 Nov 07, I think). Have fun! :) Ian BBC Radio 4

    Digg this, please!

Lucy duran and Athens-based radio presenter Giorgos Markakis will be joined by musicians, promoters and critics from around the world to discuss the nominations.

    Notes to Editors

The Radio 3 Awards For World Music is a unique collaboration between Radio 3, WOMEX, fRoots, Songlines, the Rough Guides and Serious, and the aim is to provide a showcase for the very best in world music.

Twenty-eight of the 36 nominees for the awards are voted by the delegates to WOMEX, the World Music Expo. The 2,000 delegates at the annual event each have a vote in all of the award categories, except for the Album of the Year and the Audience Award. Artists are voted for because of an outstanding album or live work during the past year.

The Album of the Year is voted on by a panel of critics assembled by fRoots magazine. The Audience Award is chosen by the general public, who vote from the overall nominations list.

In addition, music specialists at the BBC World Service choose one nomination in the geographical categories Africa, Americas, Middle East & North Africa and Asia-Pacific.

All of the nominations are then reviewed by the Awards For World Music jury (details of which can be found at bbc.co.uk/radio3) who choose the winning acts.

Interesting & intreging - I'm sure I'm not alone in being conclicted in many categories.

Another nagging question, in my mind, is - Is the Transglobal Underground offered with or without Natacha Atlas? (TGU is one of these slightly ephemeral 'collectives') *awaits clarification* Ian My.Mashable.com/Scrawl

Edit 5 Nov 07: Spellings Toumani Diabate & Symmetric Orchestra / Toumani Diabate corrected to "Toumani Diabaté's Symmetric Orchestra" / "Toumani Diabaté".

  • Azar Lawrence - theBottomEnd.co.uk Interview & "Legacy and Music of John Coltrane"…

    Out 11 2007, 15h23 por IanAR

The latest theBottomEnd.co.uk newsletter alerted me of a great new interview, from Seymour Nurse of legendary saxophonist Azar Lawrence, which I thought some of you'd like to know about (paraphrasing):renowned for his work with McCoy Tyner & Miles Davis, Azar talks to Seymour about his amazing career, and the albums Bridge Into A New Age & Summer Solstice, that gave the UK jazz-fusion dance movement two its early classics: Forces Of Nature & Novo Ano, respectively.
The interview cites Azar's recent release, with Azar Lawrence and Edwin Bayard Quartet, Legacy and Music of John Coltrane, excellent renditions of some of John Coltrane tunes that Azar and the band hold most dear. Tracks include the great songs: Mr. P.C. & Impressions - then when following through to Azar Lawrence's MySpace, I was happy to find these tracks as 0c MySpace Downloads - if hard bop's your bag, I recommend you run along there with your download machine :) Ian My.Mashable.com/Scrawl

  • Jon Lucien Leaves Us 18 Aug 07 - Keep Listening Love

    Ago 20 2007, 15h54 por IanAR

Bob Davis on The Acid Jazz Mailing List said:

    One of my personal favorites.
This is indeed a sad day.
    More later....
    --------------------------
Jon Lucien died on the morning of August 18, 2007 of respiratory failure and other complications. Jon was one the most remarkable musicians, songwriters and song interpreters that graced our lives

    Rest in peace
    Jon Lucien - Jan 8, 1942 to August 18, 2007

    "I would say my sound is a romantic sound...it's water...it's ocean...it's tranquility."

    Please, click image to vote!

I've been listening to Jon Lucien's music for over twenty-five years, as a result of his jazz room hit - Listen Love (pre-acid jazz club culture).

For me, Jon started move beyond a one-hit-wonder context when, five years ago (when he had gigs in London), my friend Bernie insisted I explore his other work. I then bought Mother Nature's Son, but was not impressed - thinking, his voice seems to have lost its fantastic velvety quality, over time.

I'm yet to delve back into his earlier archive, for new gems, and it's sad I'll now have to do it after his passing.

  • Streamable Track Gots - Jul 07

    Jul 28 2007, 14h05 por IanAR

Continuing from my Streamable Track Gots - Jun 07 article, here's my monthly installment of goodies, from my streamable track wants tag!

All tracks on Aaron Neville's My Greatest Gift have become streamable, bringing a couple of my favourites with them: TocarHercules and TocarTell It Like It Is.

I think, first heard Amy Winehouse's Rehab on Later...with Jools Holland, now it's streamable :)

Dropping the mood, for a couple of tracks: B.B. King's TocarThe Thrill Is Gone and Bruce Springsteen's TocarStreets of Philadelphia (sacrilegious to some, I'm sure, but one of the few of The Boss's tracks I like).

TocarSerrado is the track that first got me into Djavan, when it appeared in Gilles Peterson's Gilles Peterson in Brazil selection. The track's a luscious latin swing fest', the vocal gymnastics are amazing, yet so natural - Prepare to dance, this track's a joy!

Four Tet's She Moves She suffered from misassigned audio for a while - now proper stuff streams again :)

Heatwave's TocarBoogie Nights is amongst the first 100 tracks I bought - great, great, great to now have this to add to radios!

I first got to know John McLaughlin, as a boy, through my father's Mahavishnu Orchestra albums. Electric Guitarist is the only solo album, of his, that I own. This album deserves an article of it's own - a galaxy of jazz fusion/jazz rock stars session here - see Jazz-Rock-Fusion-Guitar.BlogSpot.com to get an idea. Jack Bruce's bass on TocarAre You The One? Are You The One? is characteristically outstanding and New York on My Mind is my favourite of the more traditional tracks.

Another two tracks that've returned from a streamability hiatus Ladytron's He Took Her to a Movie and Republica's Ready To Go.

Sarah Vaughan's TocarIn A Sentimental Mood is the first of two tracks, this month, contributing to the streamability of my Slushy Grooves - 1: DJ Scrawl 1992 PTT (a tag copy of a 1992 mixtape). Not my favourite recording, which's found on The Duke Ellington Songbook, Vol. 1, but excellent all the same.

The whole of The Faint's Danse Macabre Remixes album has become streamable :) Including the DJ's joy TocarThe Conductor (Thin White Duke remix) - this track rocks and's extremely easy to mix with!

I'd like to know more about TocarFor The Love Of Money, back in the early 80s there were so many covers of it, it's easy to assume this The O'Jays version is the original, but may be not.

I first came to know the song through Defunkt's TocarFor the Love of Moneycover, just listen to Kim Clarke slamming the bass on that one! IMO, Kim's one of the best female bass players the world's ever seen!

Van Morrison's TocarCrazy Love is another contributor to the Slushy Grooves mixtape tag.

Finally, Zap Mama's TocarTake Me Coco is another welcome return to streamability, after a few months away (and in mistagging land).

All of these are available, for you delight and delectation,
on my Formerly Streamable Track Wants Jul 07 PTT
or, more broadly, on my Formerly Streamable Track Wants 07.

Enjoy! - Ian :D Streamable Track Wants

  • [UK, Channel 4] How Music Works - Rhythm

    Jun 5 2007, 13h36 por IanAR

I watched a few of these shows on their first broadcast. I seems they're being repeated now, in the daytime. It seems to be going out each day, this week, 10:30 - 11:30.

The second part - rhythm has just finished. Howard Goodall and the production team did a great job: factually, musically and visually. Explaining the roots and cross-pollination of the various characteristics of rhythm, over a timespan from baroque to now.

Due deference is given to Brahms, Fats Waller, Philip Glass, mother Africa and the Cuban melting pot. For once, Stevie Wonder is provided the über-superstar status he deserves (how it riles me when he's left out of all-time top twenty songwriter lists, and such).

To me, the most interesting part was concerning a favourite piece of music Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of SpringPetrushka/The Rite of Spring. Since my teens, I've always made comparisons between this and jazz, but while Howard was explaining cross-rhythms and polyrhythms he made a quantum-leap to juxtapose Stravinsky's riot with the complex, usually voice driven, rhythms in hip-hop - and yes, when I listen to it, I can hear that now!

I'm going to set my alarm to remind me for the remaining two parts.

A number of other musicians assisted on the program, including Drum Jam, who reminded me of my friend Smiley from Gambia. Drum Jam

Some of the other music included was: Tennon Ryu (arranged by Mark Alcock), TocarDon't You Worry 'Bout A Thing, Tera Haasa (arranged by Harjit Singh), TocarHope (feat. Faith Evans, composed by Terrel Carl Mitchell / C Morton / Jerome Frederik Taylor), TocarCao Cao Mani Picao (composed by Jose Carbo), Kizuna composed, TocarSiegfried Idyll (performed by Northern Sinfornia), Romantic Piece No. 4 (performed by Steven Isserlis and Ana-Maria Vera), Steafan Hannigan - Bodhran drumming rhythms, The Seagull (performed by Shona Mooney), Zadok The Priest, TocarBlue Danube Waltz (performed by Howard Goodall), Akhnaten Prelude, Drum Jam - Improvised African rhythms, Invention Number 6 (performed by Howard Goodall), Romany Czardas, TocarPineapple Rag (performed by Howard Goodall), T'aint Nobody's Bizness If I Do (on a piano roll) (composed by Fats Waller / Harry Brooks / Andy Razaf), Ain't Misbehavin (composed by Waller / Brooks / Razaf), TocarHoneysuckle rose (composed by Waller & Razaf), O Duo - Improvised percussion rhythms, St Anthony Variations (performed by Howard Goodall & Raffaella Smith), TocarThe Message (composed by Edward Fletcher / Melvin Glover / Nathaniel Clifton Chase / Sylvia Robinson), Get It on (composed by Marc Bolan), En Guantanamo, Killing Me Softly With His Song (composed by Charles Fox / Norman Gimbel), TocarSuperstition, TocarHe's Misstra Know It All, Brandenburg Concerto No 5 (performed by Howard Goodall).
