One day Socrates was having his walk up in Acropolis (ancient Athens - Greece), and he run into a friend..
His friend announced that he had found out something very important and wanted to let him know.. Something about one of Socrates students..
Socrates smiled and told him that before listening what his friend had to say, he wanted to perform the triple analysis test..
- "Triple analysis test?" asked his friend
- "Yes, before telling me what you have heard about my student i would like to sit for a second and filter this thing that you wanna tell me..
The first filter is the "truth filter"..
Are you positive that what you are about to tell me is true, a fact ?"
- "Er.. Not exactly, but i heard this guy saying it and..."
- "I see", said Socrates, "So you have no idea if the thing you wanna tell me is actually the truth or a lie..
So, lets try the second filter, its the filter of Kindness, of well being..
What you are about to tell me about my student, is it something good, something nice? "
- "Good, nice.. ? Hm.. No, i would say its exactly the opposite i guess..."
- "So", Socrates continues, "you wanna tell me something bad about my student and you're not sure if its true".
The guy lowered his head inconveniently with shame..
- "Despite all these", said Socrates, "you can still pass the test cause a third filter also exists. The filter of usefullness..
This thing you want to tell me about my student, is it something that i will find useful?"
- "..no, i dont think so..."
- "So, if i get this whole thing straight, this thing you wanna tell me is not true, is neither good nor useful.. So why the fuck should i have to listen to it?"
The guy left after getting a good lesson..
The above incident shows why Socrates was such a great man and an excellent philosopher and was highly respected..
The above incident also explains why Socrates had never found out that Plato was fucking his wife..
