so i started this group...

  • so i started this group...

...in order to see if there were any trends among fanclub members that were distinct from NIN listeners in general...
first of all, this group seems slightly more inclined towards a variety of indie music--good indie music, of course:)--than the general NIN-listening population.
also, songs from The Fragile tend to make the top of the song chart much more often, whereas the general NIN charts are more dominated by popish songs, most of which are played frequently on the radio.

all of this is very predictable if you stereotype more dedicated NIN fans as being reflective and not only (perhaps not even necessarily) just angry at their parents.

out of curiosity: what are all of your backgrounds? and do you obsess over one NIN cd or another depending on your current life experiences?

for example: i was a devout christian until i got to college and began studying the history of christianity and philosophy--at which point i became an atheist. i've enjoyed NIN songs since i was 10 years old, but i avoided listening to them frequently until college, thinking they were devilish. i find it interesting that songs from the left disc of The Fragile resonated with me most deeply during the two years i was gradually losing my faith, and that's how i got into NIN. any other stories?

  • i agree with you on all of that... but i also think that last.fm is known to people with a more eclectic music taste.

and your example about your experience with NIN is similar to mine... ive been listening to them since i was in like 4th or 5th grade because i have an older brother who introduced me to them. i used to just really like the music and stuff, but as i've gotten older, the songs have different meanings to me. ive grown more and more skeptical, and less of a fan of, christianity, so songs like terrible lie make much more sense to me now.

all of pretty hate machine i love because those are the first songs i knew and loved. from that point on i always pretty much kept up with them, but just as enjoying the music. lately (the past couple years) i really listen to the lyrics and they make a lot more sense to me, as i have started to re-evaluate the world. they make me feel a lot less crazy too. i pretty much love everything.

i repeated myself a lot. i heart nin.

  • I agree with what you're saying, Irish Eyes and yes, lexipixie you're right aout Last FM users, most of them seem to have a more eclectic taste in music. Looking at the charts it looks like most Last FM users listen to Indie.

I "discovered" NIN when TDS came out, though I wasn't really into it. But when I heard the Fragile for the first time, now that blew me away! It still is one of my favorite albums ever. I still listen to it a lot.

I've never been a very religious person. My parents raised me "free", meaning, they both are Hindu and they taught me everything about Hinduism, but they told me I should explore all different religions myself and see what fits me best. So as a little girl I decided religions are just not something for me. I like some of the philosophy, but I don't believe there is a "God" or a "heaven" and "hell".

It's funny when you go to NIN concerts or other "rock" concerts, most people are "white". Since I'm not, it's funny to see how people react when they see me going to such a concert or see me wearing a NIN t-shirt or any other "rock" band for that matter.

    OK, I'm rambling, sorry :)

people may be reacting a little strongly, but perhaps not in a bad way. my last boyfriend was indian, and he looked hot as hell when he spiked his hair and wore black rock-band T-shirts:)

  • No, not in a bad way...but it still amazes me that people will look at you like "what are you doing here?" Or maybe that's just the way I see it...of course you never know what people are really thinking unless you ask them ;) But it just feels like that.
