• OTC Live

I saw them last year at Arthurfest in Hollywood. I was really psyched, but it turned out to be a bit of a disappointment. Basically the sound guys were dickshits, and you couldnt hear the vocals at all for about 4 songs, and even after that the piano and the guy singing harmony at the piano was still nonexistant. Still at least I got to see them once and I got to buy a copy of Singles and Beyond from John Fernandes. Fernandes by the way really helped make up for the crap sound with his badass clarinet skills.

    Anyone else seen them live?

  • I live in Atlanta and was fortunate enough to make it, to their two most recent shows in Athens. The first was at the 40 Watt Club in April of last year, with Elf Power opening and accompanied by "The Elephant 6 Orchestra" (Scott Spilane on tuba, with two other dudes on french horn and trumpet); Julian Koster played any object he could find on stage as well. I was drunk off my ass and was seeing double through Elf Power; I think I sobered up a bit for the amazing OTC set though. They walked through the crowd playing Grass Cannons at one point. Everyone sang along with a screaming Opera House for the closing song.

The other was an outdoors show at the Orange Twin complex in August of last year. They played in a small amphitheatre dug out of the earth, on a simple wooden stage covered by tarps; those of us standing up front were basically eye level with the band. Tall Dwarves opened, and most of OTC, as well as Andrew Rieger and Laura Carter of Elf power, joined them for their final song. The OTC set was beautiful. The additional musicians from the 40 Watt show joined them again. They did several suites of songs, including the Green Typewriter suite in its entirety. There was no encore because they smashed everything on stage for the final song.

There was camping after the show, but my friends and I just ended-up hanging-out on a pavilion that was out in the woods there because it had a big fireplace. Scott Spilane and John Fernandez came down and hung-out with the few of us that were still awake at four in the morning. We all stayed up until the sun came up drinking, smoking, vomiting, playing a run-down piano.

I saw them in New York City in August at the Bowery Ballroom and it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. A Hawk and A Hacksaw and the Tall Dwarves opened and then OTC came on to play an incredible set. Almost all of the elephant 6 collective was there and at one point there were 13 people on stage. Julian Koster played everything from banjo with a bow to a pink toy horse. Jeff Mangum was there and he came out to sing "I Have Been Floated" to the jubilation of everyone in the crowd. In the encore, "Shaving Spiders", Mangum came out and the whole band had a jokey shoving match while playing their instruments.

We are experts in the art of frivolous spending. And It's gone on like this for three years I guess, and we're drunk all the time and our lives are a mess
  • i was there too iodboy. awesome.

I was lucky enough to see OTC 3 times (at least - may have been more...) between the releases of 'Cubist Castle' and 'Black Foliage' - once supporting Sparklehorse, once supporting Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, but the finest was when they played an Elephant 6 night at The Garage in London, supported by The Music Tapes and Neutral Milk Hotel. Music Tapes played "The Television Tells Us", sang by an actual television! NMH were frenetic, ramshackle, and absolutely astonishing! OTC had the Elephant 6 Orchestra with them, so were fully augmented by horns, saws etc. A damn fine evening!!

  • I'm going to school in Athens, and live in Georgia as it is, so I'm hoping I'll get to see them at some point. Are they even still performing?

That was then, this is dumb.
  • The OTC broke up in 2000 I think. Around then. They reformed for a few reunion shows I think but I think that's long finished. I believe the Circulatory System play sometimes though. I wish they'd come to the UK... =(

I've seen Circulatory System twice now in Athens. The first time they played "Can You Come Down With Us?", with Bill Doss guest vocals and bass guitar. It was amazing.

  • Anybody seen them on this new E6 Holiday Surprise tour? I really wish I could go to one of these, but they're on the other side of the country. Hopefully they'll do this again and bring it out west.
