Black Foliage vs. Dusk at Cubist Castle

  • Black Foliage vs. Dusk at Cubist Castle

    Which one is your favorite?

I think I'd have to go with Dusk just because I've listened to it more and it was my first. Black Foliage is not to be shrugged off though. Both are classics.

I prefer Black Foliage. There's just something I don't like about the first couple songs on Dusk... after those though I love it just as much as Black Foliage.

  • Black Foliage by a lot.

Listen to it on headphones. Even better, listen to it on headphones stoned. If "I Have Been Floated" doesn't have some sort unbelievably profound impact on your life in that setting, you probably don't have a soul.

Of course, Dusk is also excellent. It's probably the fourth best E6 album to Black Foliage's third, and its songwriting is definitely on par with its sequel. However, it's just missing that headphone magic that puts BF over the top.

Crazy. The first 8 on Dusk is practically my favorite stretch of songs on any album.
And yeah, I listen to all my music on headphones. I Have Been Floated is fantastic. The thing I really like about Black Foliage is how it actually has some sort of interpretable narrative. This is true to an extent with Dusk, but Black Foliage really pushes it, and if you listen to it a lot, eventually you'll have some small revelation. It adds a whole new element to the album.

  • Definitely Black Foliage.

Certainly, both are great, but Black Foliage is just a more solid album. It's a bit less pop-orientated. I love both a lot, though. Not a bad song on either album.

Black Foliage. A lot of dusk is.... sigh, crap. Whenever I listen to it now I just get disappointed at how good it could be.

Even better than listening to "I Have Been Floated" on headphones is seeing Jeff and Will and Bill and Julian and everyone singing it live. I apologize to anyone who didn't get to see that.

Dusk is probably my favorite album, because of the run from Jumping Fences-Courtyard and then Green Typewriters IX-Spring Succeeds, but there are a couple songs on that album I don't love. Then again, besides for "Another Set of Bees in the Museum", Black Foliage is absolutely amazing. So I guess it's a toss-up right now.

it's hard to choose one. i at first loved black foliage and didn't like dusk that much. but then i realized how great dusk was, so i really can't pick one. i've probably listened to black foliage more, though.

  • Black Foliage, by far! :)

  • Yeah, Black Foliage by far. For pretty much the same reasons mentioned above, the feeling of listening to it playing on headphones while stoned being one of the most important things in my life for some -quite long- period. Coincidence?

Black Foilage! It feels like amore complete album. It all fits together. Love both of them, though. So very much.

  • black foliage by maybe an inch. but i've listened to it more than dusk. i have some favorites on dusk as well, but 'peculiar noise', 'a new day', 'i have been floated' and 'california demise 3' are unsurpassed. i also agree about its awesomeness stoned with headphones. the first time i listened to BFAM when i was stoned was practically a revelatory experience. there are some unbelievable things hidden in there.

  • the first time i listened to black foliage it was through headphones while tripping on shrooms (my first true psychedelic experience, even)

needless to say bf and i share a very intimate relationship.

  • Personally, I find Dusk at cubist castle to be more interesting conceptually even if it doesnt live up to the sheer wallofsound intensity that black foliage has. The Green typewriters series is a brillant album within an album. That long pause of ambience broken by a wavering "how much longer can i wait" sends chills down my spine. How perfect is OTC's blend of ambience, noise, and pop melodies. Brillant compositions.

I'm not a musical elitist, just a connoisseur.

I had black foliage first. Then dusk 3 months or so later, when my obsession with this band was in full swing. I feel like the songwriting was stronger on dusk, but the "noise" sections on dusk aren't very good, something they got the hang of by black foliage. Also, black foliage, from a compositional standpoint is put together with more care. However, I think just because dusk is so much stronger songwriting-wise, I have to choose it.

Black Foliage I think definitely, like others said I Have Been Floated is powerful. Dusk could be better, the Green Typewriters stretch is brilliant, but, Black Foliage has much more depth.

  • you really can't beat the green typewriters sequence for a short little burst of OTC- by itself, I like it better than black foliage, but as an enitre album black foliage is superior, in my book.

  • Definitely Dusk at Cubist Castle.
The reason is, surprisingly, the same as jtgotsjets': my first mushroom trip
    (ánd my first E6 album)

Major Organ And The Adding Machine would be on 2) but that ain't OTC of course

How could I possibly choose? Both are epic.

  • i personally have to say black foliage

off topic though, i just got into otc recently through of montreal and i've been loving them, im trying to get my hands on some apples in stereo stuff

can anyone reccomend to me some stuff that is similar to otc?

I've got blisters on my fingers and I'm a Nazi!

Out of the E6 catalog i recommend Apples in Stereo's "Her Wallpaper Reverie" (similarly psychedelic pop), The Gerbils' "Are You Sleepy?", Of Montreal "The Early 4 Track Recordings" (the one with all the Dustin Hoffman songs), and The Sunshine Fix (post otc project of Bill Doss)... their EP "The Future History of a Sunshine Fix" is very similar to otc.

Oh and as far as dusk vs. foliage... Dusk has better songs than foliage (such as Tropical Bells which no one gives enough credit for being the trippiest song in existence), but Foliage is an overall more cohesive, conceptual and better produced album. I love both, but like others mentioned the lead up to I have been floated and the track itself is phenomenal... best example i can think of when an ambient track is so musically important in building on an actual song.
