@nkh - nice.. check out my profile, its dripping with nuskool funky beats youre bound to find something you dig no doubt. I did a stint working at Real World studios near Bath, England a few years back, its pretty famous relatively speaking.. being in Scotland you might not have heard of it.. google it, their studios are the bomb.. a very interesting mixup of reallllly old but well maintained analogue kit and state of the art stuff.

@awthomp86 - BOSE aint all that. maybe in your car but not at home. its just a posers' manufacturer.. seriously.. for the money you could get some far nicer kit.

    word.

kawazoe - just followed your suggestion and googled Real World Studios, i'm suprised i've never heard of that place.. it looks amazing, had a look through the equipment/mic list and you're right - there's a nice selection of stuff!

i couldn't get the panoramic views to work, due to not having quicktime installed on this machine - but even from the stills the recording spaces look brilliant.

I had a look at your profile aswell, i see last week you were listening to the cinematic orchestra? makes me want to dig out Man With A Movie Camera i really enjoyed that album, but haven't put it on in a long time!

i think i'll abstain from the free trial of the BOSE thing i mentioned, partly because i don't want to pay to post it back and partly cause i think awthomp86 is right.. if i get the trial, and i does sound good i'll want to keep it!

  • right on!

I'm telling you, kawazoe, BOSE is an excellent deal for the money. I'd dare say it's the best system you can get for the amount of money you spend. They look good, last a long time, and have no problems filling a room with sound. The customer service is good as well.

Cinematic orchestra is pretty sweet.. Have you heard the Brainfreeze CD by DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist? Thats dripping with funky beats..

    awthomp86 - NEIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! nein nein nein!122112"121132ponoi[sefno[sa lol!

    kawazoe,

I have heard of decksanddrumsandrockandroll, but not heard much material from it, is it worth a listen?

and yeah, i have Brainfreeze on CD (although i'm sure i read somewhere that it's not official, as it has some spanish piracy sign on the back). Nonetheless it's a superb mix.. one of the few mixes i've heard since, that i would rate as highly would be AEIOU Vol.2 by Diplo and Tripledouble.. it features old rock, jazz, funk etc.. classic!

I'm must say though, i'm intrigued.. what path led you to working at those studios?

On another note, i followed that link to your homepage, and again i'm intrigued, what kind of stuff are you looking to air on there and what kinda bit-rates? I've always loved the idea of net-radio, t'was one of the things that attracted me to last.fm!

Their album is alright, I think its worth a listen. It has a few quality tracks, and a really cool 10 minute James Bond theme (I think they did some of the music for some of the films in the late 90s era). The Brainfreeze CD is official - I bought mine from a Virgin Megastores I believe!! Looks proper to me. I'll have to investigate that reccomendation of yours, not heard of it.

Back then I was quite in to music production and studio work in my spare time, they needed an assistant engineer, so managed to blag myself a short term contract, it was great.

Yeah working on the homepage stuff as we speak, its nearing completion.. At the moment we're supporting 100 listeners at 128kbit/s (stereo 44khz mp3 naturally), but our server has capacity for much more than that if needed. Its proving quite difficult to foster some public interest in it at the moment, but once everything is ready to go live and I start the mailing list up hopefully we can get a listener base together. As for music styles, its going to be varied (but pre-determined) eg. hiphop/breaks styles or electronica or funky house.. pretty much anything thats decent really. Your music tastes seem pretty sound, if you'd be interested in a DJ position or want a sneak-preview at the site drop me an email.

  • Hey New People!!!!!

This isn't a group where you just have a link on your profile to make you look cool. It's a community and about sharing your little branch of elitism with the rest of us.

That said, it is unrealistic to expect a post a day, but when you see something you can add to, do so. Please. One a week and we'll all be happy.

And Ramez05, for wanting to be in so bad, you haven't posted.

Adam and I are going to do some cleaning house pretty soon.

  • Sorry for my lack of posting over the last month or so, haven't had access to a computer at uni since mine got stolen, but I try to post whenever I can

  • Oh its not a problem! Posting in the past is different than never posting at all.

Guys, please, don't get scared or anything. If you have ever posted anything you won't get booted.

    We're not mean!

  • Hi gang (or should I say mob of smarmy know-it-alls) of elitists!

My name is John. Am in my later thirties. Have been a die-hard fan of indie music since the days of hanging on to my lunch money in high school so we could ride the trolley downtown, grab any new 7" import singles from obscure, tres chic british new wave acts and still make it home for dinner Mom being none the wiser. Had a band in high school that was playing (again) obscure Gun Club, Eddie & the Hot Rods, and Gang of Four songs long before we even had a clue what they were singing about. "What's supply-side economics?", "I dunno, some british thing they're all ranting about. Who cares, listen to Andy Gill go crazy. Awesome..."

Still lovin the music although I'm a Dad now and run my own design firm and own a minivan. No more safety pins in the ears or late night concerts. It's all about the music. Happy to join in the discussions though. Lots of great artists out there.

Great to have you aboard in our hip little club... even if you are hurting our coolness credibility with the minivan. :) Haha, and I love the supply-side economics quip.

What kind of design do you do John? Graphic?

  • Welcome John! I always enjoy reading your posts!

  • Ha. When I was a freshman and starting our band, our guitarists older brother, a senior who was our alabaster "tower of coolness" wrote a song for his band called "supply side". We thought they could do no wrong until one day one of our band admitted that they had no idea what he was singing about. We asked him and he derisively tossed his copy of Gang of Four's "Entertainment" at us. We covered "Armalite Rifle" when I was only 13. I thought armalite was plastic. Ha.

I run an interaction design firm in Pittsburgh called Gist. We work primarily with software developers and technology clients doing all sorts of interesting consulting work. Great to work with a lot of fun NASA types with WAY freaky musical tastes. People who live for the Books, Matmos, and even the Kallikak Family which to me is like taking the speaker off of an old rotary phone and listening to the incoming analog wires buzzing. Dokaka anyone?

I'm happy to be on board. Having fun. Found a lot of great recommendations here.

Glad to hear it. Speaking of Matmos, I work for our college radio station, and I actually reviewed their latest album for our DJs to put into the rotation bins. Got to say that was one of the weirdest albums I have listened to. Not something I am going to enjoy on a day to day basis, but one of the most original bands out there right now I think. There is no comparing their sound with another band. As for the Books, well... for lack of a better expression, I think they suck. Haha, and from the sound of it, don't know if I will be listening to Kallikak Family any time soon.

  • Matmos are one of the more interesting conceptual artists out there. Like most conceptual art however you can appreciate the concept in the abstract but it really doesn't touch you too deep in a soulful way. Like you, I can't remember too many times where I'm feeling in the moment and I think to myself "You know I could REALLY go for some Matmos right now. That would really set the tone..." Ha. With the exception of surgery, there aren't too many moments in my life where I'd find Matmos music personally relevant.

  • I hate introductions

My name is Ashley and I live in the ever exotic North Hollywood, CA and I go to high school in Van Nuys, CA. I get paid to make movie sound effects (yes, like horse galloping and creaky floors) and I once saw Newman from Seinfield in the car next to me on the freeway. That pretty much sums me up...oh wait...I like music as well.

My favorite bands are The Kinks and Pixies

Hey everyone! I just joined the group this morning, so I suppose I should go ahead and post a little bit about myself before I have a chance to put if off. My name is Bradley and I'm about to start my second year at Clemson University with a computer engineering major and business administration and math minors. My music taste is random at best..I mostly listen to rock (everything from alt to emo to indie), but I can get into indie pop, classic guitar, classical, techno, and irish folk too. Favorite band wise, my tastes change too often to really nail one down, but I've been really into Nickel Creek, Guster, The Spill Canvas, and Jump, Little Children lately.

I'm Harry and i guess im a musical elitist. I'm 15 years old and my all-time favourite band (as un-elitist as it is) is Nirvana. Following that would be a whole bunch of two-guitar, vocal harmony bands like the dandy warhols, neutral milk hotel, the beta band, the panda band, the new pornographer, sonic youth and the smashing pumpkins. Right now i'm going thru a phase in which i am getting into some 60's shiate like the kinks and jefferson airplane and some electronica schtuff like The helio sequence and the flaming lips. I recently went thru a nu-wave phase getting into stuff like depeche mode and the smiths. Let me explain, I go through a phase in which i try and find good bands from certain genres and eras, then i extract the best ones and try to buy all their albums. so yeh.

I am also an orgasm addict and a kleptomaniac. well that sums it up i guess.
