Help Yr Girl Out

  • Birthday Flourish, for Five Trumpets or Brass Quintet - Elliott Carter

I also second the suggestion of Viva Las Vegas. Any version will do, and the more versions the better. Record your own even.

Oh she's going to love this CD, I'm sure.

  • Mix Tape

Hit me with your favorite long-distance love songs. Songs about missing and longing for someone you can't be around.

    pleaseandthankyou!

p.s. should i just start a thread about making mix cds? are you all avid cd makers? do you do themes? what's going on?

    Yessssss!!

I only do themes once in a while, but I freaking love making mix CDs.

As for long-distance love, I think I'll need some time to think about it. "Long Vermont Roads" by The Magnetic Fields comes immediately to mind.

I make mix CD's but I barely ever use themes. Just whatever I'm listening to at that point in time, and I put the date on it.

Also, the obvious answer is Radar Love by Golden Earring.

  • A couple of these are pretty horrible.

Leaving on a Jet Plane - John Denver
Next to You - The Police
Los Campesinos! - Drop It Doe Eyes
Death Cab for Cutie - Transatlanticism

  • if you're talking about los campesinos!, well you better drop it, doe eyes.

and i will always love transatlanticism. forever. i don't care how bad death cab got.

Good idea, but I'm afraid it might have mixed results (see above).

Thoughts. The Decemberists, The Legionnaire's Lament; Electrelane, To the East; Noir Desir, Le Vent Nous Portera; The Maple Trail, New York; Belle & Sebastian, Piazza, New York Catcher; The Ink Spots, Don't Get Around Much Anymore; Josephine Foster, All I Wanted Was the Moon; Crowded House, Weather With You (ooo, yeah) ...

... Elton John, Rocket Man ...

... Dexys Midnight Runners, Seven Days Too Long ... (&c.)

  • Ok, so those are quite good.

  • A few more:

    Heartbeat City—The Cars
    Answering Machine—The Replacements
    A Song For Europe—Roxy Music
    Radio Cure—Wilco
    13 Months In 6 Minutes—The Wrens

I just realised ... when I said "it might have mixed results (see above)" I meant the previous page of this thread, not your mixtape efforts, General.

    You did fine. Really fine.

  • Uh, I didn't actually read that bit - I just thought yours were really good. I was going for understatement. I would only add that it has to be the Kate Bush version of Rocket Man.

Good good good just checking, don't want no accidental rudeness.

I had no idea Kate did Rocket Man. With a gentle reggae backbeat. And Celtic pipes. My life is a little richer for hearing it.

  • It's amazing! It shits in a cup, eats it, and then pukes all over the Elton John version.

  • Quite a few members of this group are members of other last.fm groups that just exist to make mixtapes. I know I'm in one that has at least two others, and saw that Funio is in another mixtape group.

Also, I don't remember ever commenting in this thread, and was quite surprised when I saw it in my reply tracker.

It's dribbling into his grand piano. That'll NEVER come out.

  • So yeah, maybe a thread on mixtapes would be cool/worthwhile.

    Do it, Ruffles.

  • We did our last mixtape thing in the middle of last year - were you around for that tromb? It died a death when people stopped listening/voting, but I think we agreed we'd start it up again at some point.

  • I don't think I could do mixtapes from most "mixtape groups." I tried one of them on facebook....I'll leave the rest to your imagination. I know Kevin (Eaglehartt) was really disappointed with the mixes he got from one of the groups on this site.
But I trust the majority of you guys. I'd be willing to partake if we did it again, esp since I missed it last time.

    I'd do it again.

I believe i kicked the ass of the last competition.

I think people gave up after that mix whose theme was "the first ten random tracks that shuffle up". My attitude, at least, was that if people didn't seem to be putting any effort into it, why should I bother listening.

  • The ultimate:
Boots of Spanish Leather - Bob Dylan
    also:
Throw Aggi Off the Bridge - Black Tambourine
Penny and Jack - The Essex Green

Yeah it was off to a good start and sort of faltered. Knk did kill it, though, I'll admit that I voted his higher than anyone else's. I didn't like all of the songs more, but for an overall listen, there was much more thought in it.

I would do it again, but I don't want to manage it. I'm sort of drained when it comes to facilitating these sorts of things anymore.

  • It doesn't have to be a competition. It can just be a recommendation thread for themes and songs that we can use whenever we desire. At least, that's how I interpreted it. Competitions are too stressful and problematic.
