the even-much-more belated jazz mixtape thread

  • the even-much-more belated jazz mixtape thread

Based on eagleheartt's intro-to-metal, I volunteered to do a similar for jazz. Just wanted to let the few who might care know that I'm working on it. I'm down to about 500 songs and I would like to shoot for Kevin's finished length of <100.

Upfront caveats: this isn't gonna be a history of or a survey of jazz. Gonna try to divide it into three or four parts that make some sense together.

Also, since all-but-the-dead-or-yet-unborn know (or think they do) Coltrane, Miles, Ornette, Mingus, Monk, they will not be represented, at least not directly.

Kevin included some of the artists "everyone" knows, and I thought that worked fine, but there were already complaints of "No Miles Please" and, well, since Miles statistically is my # 1 play, I thought it more diplomatic not to bludgeon anyone with my particular myopia.

Oh, yeah. If you've got a constitutional aversion to anything over 5 minutes long, these are gonna probably make you go "pffffffft!"

  • Good luck, I'll be sure to download it once my internet returns.

Probably slightly off topic: I noticed Eyvind Kang in your charts earlier, and wanted to ask you which album(s) to get of his? It sounds like he's an interesting enough fellow, and I dig a few albums he's guested on, but I was less than impressed with the album I picked up, "Athlantis". I want to give him another crack before writing him off completely, really.
  • Bring on the jazz music, Jaymo.

I recently checked him out myself, so I cannot offer too much insight into the violinist/composer, but Virginal Co-Ordinates is a really beautiful, ambient album, with great vocals by Mike Patton. I listened to it the other day driving to work at 6 AM, and it was a fantastic way to wake up. Listening to Pop radio at work afterwards, however, put me back to sleep.
    Yo, seventh position ain't shit.

I'm looking forward to this. When I listened to some jazz songs in the 1001 Best Songs (which we should really start again once the mixtape comp is over), I was intrigued. Jazz is a genre I'd like to explore.
  • I'll second that Virginal Coordinates. Kang is another one of those Zorn acolytes where you're never sure what you're going to get out of the collaboration.

The Story of Iceland is probably my favorite. The very first one 7 Nades is more "metal" if that's the right word, and theater of the Mineral Nades sort of presages "Iceland." Live Low to the Earth in this Iron Age is a little more minimalist and may or may not have some of the Sun City Girls in it (it's on their label). I like it, but it's not the sort of thing that knocks anyone out.

There seem to be two versions of Virginal, but I think the label difference is just which country it's released in. Other than that, it seems to be the same.

  • I bought The Story of Iceland last Friday (along with like ten other albums) and have not listened to it yet, but it bears the Tzadik mark of quality and was 7 bucks used, and now has the Beelzbubba Bump!

If it's not good, then it's gonna sound God-awful after the hype, even if it is only so-so. Luckily, it'll probably be amazing 'cause it's Kang.

Sounds good but where is kevin's jazz mix? i'd like to give that a shot too.
  • I would love a Jazz mixtape, I pretty much only know/listen to the artists mentioned in the original post.

I don't think Kevin (as in eagleheartt) offered a jazz mixtape. Not saying he couldn't. I think Connor offered and still may.

"I do give a shit about jazz. Wait a minute. I mean i really care :)

I can prepare one jazzy mixtape later that week."

I remember reading about a proposed jazz mixtape when I first was accepted, and offered to help with it if help was needed. I did not know you Beelz, at that time, and now realize you are quite capable of flying solo, and helping me out over and over again. I cannot find the thread where you offered to make the mixtape that this thread is about, but I did find Zorzynek's above offer. I could make a mixtape, but I think it would be pretty redundant of yours, and not as overall sound.

I could make a big band mix, if interest exists. I will wait and see yours, and then maybe make an addition to it of some good big band shit. And I don't mean Dorsey Brothers or Glenn Miller, I mean Shit that is still interesting and fresh.

You are right, it was Funio who offered. I don't know why I thought it was you other than the avatars were both black & white.

I couldn't find my original offer either. Didn't look too hard. I think the more the merrier, but at some point, my guess is that NJE (non jazz elitists) will tell us to take it over to the Jazz Desk.

    Til then, I'll keep working.

You do so. I failed to prepare such mixtape. There are two good reasons for it: I deleted over 30GB of music and most of it was jazz, or jazz wannabe. Second reason is that I get a lot work to do last week, this week, and next week will be no different too. Since I'm freelancer I can't let down new clients, and - of course - old clients too.

So, I'm looking forward to hear Jazztapes by Jaymo:)
Still I hope to do some personal mixtape, but when I'll manage to do that - I just don't know.
You'll have to speak up, I'm wearing a towel.

Hopefully I'll have the internets back by the time this tape appears, as I'd like to hear it too. I could still be gone for a while yet though... At the moment I'm trying to transfer my mp3s from this PC, so that I can take it all too my new flat.

    It's a tedious job.

I've got 540 tunes weeded down to 150 and I'm shooting for under 100, sorted into no more than 4 categories.

  • That musical jargon bit in the middle is spot-on, parody-wise.

Also, The music they play sounds eerily similar to the songs on Mirakle by Derek Bailey with Jamaaladeen Tacuma on bass and
Calvin Weston on drums, which is a really fun album.
    Yo, seventh position ain't shit.
  • I loved that show. Apparently whenever they ran out of names for the jazz musicians, they'd take out a map of London Underground and just use station names like Stepney Green and Theydon Bois.
