Hyperbole alert. But yeah, great album. I had no idea there were elitists who hadn't heard it yet. Also, I've still never seen Jay live, which is pretty embarrassing.

Dude, you're from Memphis. Come on! I've been to see him twice — once when he opened for Dinosaur Jr. and the other at Gonerfest this year, to which he was a no-show.

  • Been spinning this record quite a bit:

  • one of my favourites.

  • Feeding the Flame

Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention, eagleheartt. Stunning stuff. I've got a feeling I'll be playing this nonstop throughout the weekend.

The rest of you should follow suit.

  • Nothing particularly unique, but it's good pop music for relaxing

That was then, this is dumb.

Ok, i'm selling my guitar, right now .... :(

  • These two have been on repeat in my (unscrobbled) CD player:

India is the focal point for me. Dolphy and Coltrane rocked the jazz world in 1961 at the Village Vanguard with "India" and "Impressions," with so much negative criticism that it would be a good three years before Coltrane ventured this far out again. Listen to the constant yet restrained barrage by Elvin Jones. McCoy Tyner was just 23 then and his role is limited, but the interplay between Jones and Coltrane is stunning.

No one quite mastered the minor chord hard bop ballad (hard bop ballad? a contradiction in terms?) like Sonny Clark. Voodoo is at the top of the list of the understated "mysterioso" gems penned by Clark.

  • Not really unique or obscure, but I've been listening to this just about every day.

Shudder To Think - Pony Express Record Gets better as album progresses.

Henry Cow - In Praise of Learning

  • Really a magnificent live album. The unsung hero of singer-songwriters everywhere!

    Nile "In Their Darkened Shrines"

    Oldschool stuff. Still great.

  • Robotobibok - Instytut las

It's like a mix of free jazz with electronic shit, quite trippy!

  • interesting jump from Mingus to Pulp. I too often make genre jumps that would seem strange to someone who doesn't listen to a ton of music, but those make perfect sense...

  • Third Ear Band - S/T (1970)

How this band gets lumped in with prog rock astounds me, except I guess that some fraction of proggers will eventually come around to Terry Riley, Pandit Pran Nath, La Monte Young, et al, and this British group is in that same circle.

This hard-to-find 2nd album is probably my favorite of theirs.

I've not had too much time to listen to music this week, I'm still enjoying the Jay Reatard record though. I feel like a right reatard* for not having listened to it before now!

    Great & underrated band!

  • It's taken me nearly 10 years to pluck up the courage to listen to this. Legend has it he only sold 500 copies.

    Wildbirds & Peacedrums - Heartcore

Swedish wife & husband duo focused on her vocals and his percussion. Experimental/pop/freak folk. I dig it.

Discovered this last week, but well after you, evidently. Great record. Am trying to find the one they released this year, but so far to no avail.

  • The Sea and Cake - Car Alarm

This record sounds a lot like Steely Dan, only without the tunes. It's all a bit slight for my liking.

Edit: Some very tasty basslines though.

    I found it on waffles.

    love, music, wine and revolution
  • Is there any way you could pass it on to me? *simper*

They sort of threw me out of Waffles.
