What albums are you listening to this week? And like, why?

  • What albums are you listening to this week? And like, why?

I thought this thread might be needed, if only by me.

People Take Warning! Murder Ballads & Disaster Songs 1913-1938

Collecting all these songs together is utterly twisted, but it’s all great stuff, with titles like “Burning Of the Cleveland School” and “McBeth Mine Explosion” – I’m still on the first of three volumes, but there’s not a bad track here so far. It costs a fortune to buy, but for my sins, I found it on waffles.

God's Got It: The Legendary Booker And Jackson Singles

This is much, much better than it looks. Reverend Charlie Jackson leads his congregation with a Fender Mustang and has something of the devil about him.

    The Wave Pictures – Sophie

I love everything this band does – very, very English, but deeply unshit.

  • wtf is the first one??? i didn't even know music existed in 1913.

    love, music, wine and revolution
  • It's roots, blues and folk, and it's all seriously morbid. If you like Leadbelly/Guthrie type stuff, you'll love it.

  • That sounds like a compilation I would really enjoy...I will have to buy it later though because I don't have much money right now.

Er, ever heard of classical? ;)

Anyway, here's what I've been spinning:

The Fall—The Wonderful And Frightening World Of The Fall

It's poppier and more "accessible" than This Nation's Saving Grace, and I love it. "C.R.E.E.P." is almost new wave, so that's a key standout, but there are plenty of other songs on there that are these great twisted pop songs. "Copped It" and "Slang King" are so addictive.

    The Capstan Shafts—Environ Maiden

Despite generalmalaise's less-than-lukewarm opinion of it, I love this stuff. Despite the obvious GBV comparisons, there are some important differences: more acoustic guitar, a bit more sentimental subject matter, and the occasional big guitar solo or funky bass riff. And anyway, there are a lot worse bands to rip off than GBV. :P

Also, I regret if this comes off as an insult, but given the title of this thread, especially with the "like," I could have sworn that it was findingthebomb who'd started it.

    dystopia-Human=Garbage

really sweet crusty sludge. By far Dystopia's best album and its the most depressing shit ever, music to kill yourself to.

    Saves the Day-Through Being Cool

I don't care what anyone says, this album is pure angsty teenage bullshit and I love it.

  • Catherine Wheel - Adam and Eve 1997

I had no idea how good this album really was. I've been avoiding it for the longest time since it's well into their "post-shoegaze" phase.

    Pacific UV - Long Play 2 2008

Best album of 2008, so far, imho. I won't shut up about this band until someone finally listens to them.

Saturday Looks Good to Me - All Your Summer Songs 2003

No matter how hard I try, I can't stop listening to this album. Too bad I can't get into any of their other stuff.

    Neither was I.

(This happens more than you'd think. It's a bit scary.)

Ha! I wasn't being serious either, but then you knew that. That's a pretty atypical Fall album, but amazing nonetheless - Disney's Dream Debased and No Bulbs are the stand-outs for me.

  • The Drift - Memory Drawings

It took probably five or six listens to wrap my head around this one. I'm not usually that musically dense. Maybe i'm not perfect after all.

I have Fill Up The Room, but thought it really generic and gave up on them.

I'll give Pacific UV a try.

If like me you have no morals whatsoever, you could always poke around here for a Waffles invite. Pillars gave me mine. I think Ashley buried him under her patio, but you didn't hear it from me.

  • I try to buy all of my music, and it usually isn't a problem...but I am spending ridiculous amounts of money on shows/transportation to those shows in the next few weeks so I am short on money.
It's fine though, I can wait. And I will post my weekly albums later tonight.

Great! I remember hearing about this on NPR and it sounded really interesting. Supposedly, back in the pre-CNN day, the pop music at the time was also news, and these songs functioned almost as outlets for world events.

a student in my wife's history of photography class asked--in all seriousness--if artists were able to paint in color before color film was invented. when this person's mouth opens, you can see the light go on, indicating that the compressor motor is running, but the mind is frozen.

but hey, I knew you was jk

until I was like 8 I thought the world used to be in black and white.

  • This helped me get through driving down the M6 in the pissing rain to get to a course this week at Keele University.

and this album is just great - one of my favourites of the last few years. I love her voice

Did you read too much Calvin and Hobbes as a young child?

(It's all right, I did too. That led me to wonder for a short while why speech bubbles don't come out of our mouths when we talk.)

Organized Konfusion - Stress: The Extinction Agenda

Gotta say, I had heard these guys were good, but I didn't know they were this good. I am absolutely just loving this album. Really great hip-hop.

Wrecked beat me to the punch, I was just about to say the same thing. They have my vote for the most unappreciated hip hop group. I love the track "The Rough Side of Town."

Been looking all over for it to no avail. Stress wasn't an easy album to find either.

  • It's on What.cd and Waffles if you have an account. I can send it to you if you'd like
