I'd like someone who likes both Belle & Sebastian and Throbbing Gristle, knows the difference between dream pop and shoegaze, and shares the same enthusiasm for music from Scotland, lives whithin a 40 mile radius, and is at least mildly attractive.

Is that too much to ask for?

yeah dude. loosen up, have fun, music ain't everything, sex is better.

unless you are being sarcastic, good show then.

ps, what is the difference between dream pop and shoegaze? isn't sort of a venn diagram thing?

Yeah, I know. I was kidding. My standards are much lower than that. There is kernel of truth in that sarcastic wish though; that would be my ideal. but it's the ideal because it's impossible.

Dream pop/shoegaze is like a venn diagram. It's a standrad elitists use to measure someone's knowledge. Though there are minute differences. Shoegaze seems to be a little more indulgent and more reliant on feedback. Think of the difference "proto-gaze" bands Cocteau Twins and JaMC, or sg staples like MBV and Slowdive. The former in both examples, tend to be more cacophonous. There is, however, a lot of overlap, and little agreement.

Anyway, I'll settle for someone who's at least tolerant and open-minded.

  • I an against open-mindedness

  • Open-mindedness (for me) , i.e., not being completely turned off by Elizabeth Fraser's "unintelligible" lyrics, thus prematurely dismissing everything else; nor, not being too disgusted by TG's bacchanalian excess. A willingness to experiment with music one is not used to.
That's more or less what I mean by open-mindedness.

I don't give a fuck about "dream pop" or "shoegaze", preferring to clump them both into "shitty British music I'm not going to listen to".

  • Go back to your fort.

What, you can't be an Elitist if you don't like breakcore, shoegaze, or dreampop? Doesn't that just make me more of an elitist than everyone else?

  • Bastard has a point. That's why his group is only elite enough for him :)

Oh, speaking of, I have a pending member over at the Fort. That hasn't happened for some time.

  • boot

  • I think I got off easy.

But if I'm going to age that fast, I should really start looking for a husband now.

That was then, this is dumb.

I mean, it's not like I'm going to say "I fell for him because of our super compatibility on last.fm", music taste isn't very high on my list. There are more important things, like attractive/intelligent/being a Gemini

Hey, it's not like I want to be lonely.

It's just that I'm a rogue mind caught in modern parlance, a samurai wandering the culture deserts, a lonely musical penguin, waiting for my lady penguin and I to finally smack our penguin bodies together like so many chalkboard erasers...

    [sigh]

It's not easy at the top.

[A single tear wells slowly, falls down face. String section swells, camera pans to stock footage.]

Yesterday it took me 10 minutes to decide what drink I wanted at Starbucks, and the barista started guessing what sign I was.

While music taste isn't a huge priority, the way I cannot manage to not be obnoxiously snobby when music comes up in conversation seems to be a deterrent.

I have gotten A LOT better at not being a douchebag when it comes to talking about music, but oh how I relapse from time to time

I try to backtrack and be like, "oh but [whatever you like that I just said was awful] is okay...." but of course it's always too late by that point.

That was then, this is dumb.

I just looked at the Butt Buddies for the first time, and saw this thread. I'm really touched that you guys care enough about me to talk about me when I'm not even around. :)

Ironically, I have the complete discographies of the following Butt Buddies connection artists:

    New Order
    Von Südenfed
    Big Star
    Bauhaus
    Public Image Ltd.
    The Birthday Party
    Big Black
    The Chameleons
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
    Patti Smith
    Elvis Costello
    Billy Bragg
    Swans
    Prince
    Television
    The Flaming Lips
    The Dismemberment Plan
    Can
    Brian Eno
    Neil Young
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
    Talking Heads
    Buzzcocks
    Bob Dylan
    Gang of Four
    The Clash
    R.E.M.
    Sonic Youth
    David Bowie
    Pixies
    The Velvet Underground
    The Fall
    Joy Division
    The Jesus and Mary Chain
    Echo & the Bunnymen

Apparently, I'm over 75% Butt Buddy.

You have the complete discography of The Fall? I don't believe it. That would bankrupt me eight times over.

    I'm a Gemini

  • I'm a Libra

  • knkwzrd, how can you afford so much music?

  • I've been married 30 years--and we've lived together for 33. Compatibility on a lot of issues was key; but compatibility doesn't mean identical by a long shot. I'm way more interested in music than she is, but I think if she wasn't at least receptive to the music I was listening to, we might not have hit it off. That said, those kinds of things are in flux; when we first started seeing each other, I was also interested in a girl who shared my rock tastes (we're talking 1971 here, so...Stooges, Alice Cooper, Spirit, Mahavishnu Orchestra) and my wife-to-be liked my jazz tastes. So, I think that had a cybernetic effect--I kept adjusting how far out I could take my music.

30 years and this still happens. Of course, over the years, our tastes are greatly different; she brought Sheryl Crow & Fiona Apple into the house and it was years before she listened to any hip hop. She can read a David Sedaris book over and over, while I'll listen to 40s & 50s noir detective radio shows.

  • Taurus here. I bet knkwzrd is an Aries. I can picture him sat on a high chair in his Bastard Fort surrounded by balloons and streamers, utterly sated by his own miserable company. Then one day...he sees her, his Valkyrie princess, trundling slowly through the gates of Valhalla. They fall in love and have lots of bearded bastard viking babies. The end.
