Politics Politics Politics!

  • Oh. My. God.

McCain's half of the debate had me absolutely howling. It honestly was comedy of the highest order.

There were plenty of classic lines, but my personal favorite was this: "I actually did look Putin in the eyes, and what I saw were three letters: K, G, B!" Apart from that, his constant "let's cut spending" broken record trope (all with the delicious irony of picking Ms. Bridge To Nowhere as a running mate lying beneath the surface), hilarious mispronunciation of "Ahmadinejad," completely ignoring Obama's astute mention of "Bomb Iran," his childishly devoted clinging to Reagan while never mentioning Bush once, his ludicrously loud pen-scribbling (was he using a Sharpie, or what?!), his FACES...all accidental comedy gold.

Congratulations, John, you have officially turned into a parody of yourself, or rather, your former self. And if the reaction isn't exactly like I'd predicted months ago, basically Kennedy/Nixon redux, I shall promptly find a ten-gallon hat to eat.

Obama never pointed out how dangerous and bellicose some of McCain's rhetoric is (like the K.G.B. comment) though. He played it safe, which is understandable since the remaining debates are on his turf (domestic issues) and he is up in the polls. It was frustrating to watch for me though, it seemed Obama was playing defense when he is the challenger.

Edit: This Slate sums my frustration better than I could: http://www.slate.com/id/2200580/

  • Oh dear. That was brilliant. (And, yes, perhaps it was Freudian...surely his cheatin' ways haven't fully died.)

But the way I see it, McCain doesn't need Obama to point out that he's acting like a loose-screw reactionary in terms of foreign policy, since he did quite a good job of that himself, and in a way that wasn't completely lost on a large audience. I mean, he talked like everyone's patronizing but senile grandpa, and threw a lot of bureaucratic mumbo-jumbo into his speech, while Obama was clear and lucid the whole time.

I can't wait for the matchup between Biden and Palin(' In Comparison)

  • yea dude i saw this debate thing last night with that dude from PBS. I thought it was pretty funny, some good acting but john's character had me a bit confused... was he like barack's dad or something? He was all like scolding little barack and stuff like "you don't know, shut up a let me talk". I dunno, what was with that line on the bottom too was that like john's heart monitor or something? If so I guess that was a pretty nice touch, it gave people something to watch when things got dull. Other than that is pretty cool I guess but the post-game was a little boring. They never talked about the score or anything, I still don't know who won. I hope there is a grudge match though, hopefully John Madden will host it.

Can't wait for Palin? Here's a Markov Chain generator that provides the questions and Palin's answers. Why wait for next week?

  • The CBS interview made me want to hide behind the sofa. It's almost cruel they're making her debate next week.

Why even watch the debates, Cat? You've already got your mind made up going into it all.

  • To be fair, most of the people I know who watched the debates already have already made up their minds.

That was then, this is dumb.

I know, I just don't understand it. I'm one of those stuck in the middle, so I am using the debates as a way to decide between the candidates.

  • Seriously? I know I said I was disinterested in all this, but having seen Palin in something akin to action, how on earth could you be undecided? Even if there was no chance she'd ever be President herself, it's thrown up all sorts of questions vis-a-vis his judgement in picking her/his impotence in having her thrust upon him. Were I not sitting astride this here fence, (and had I any say in this election) it'd be a no-brainer.

  • But they're most excellent entertainment!

And I love watching others' minds be made up. Mind you, I've never been a fence-sitter in these kinds of things.

I don't think fence sitters exist. Either you violently care about politics or you're indifferent and you're just voting because it seems like something you ought to do. Especially in the United States, where the only options are Corporate Shill A v. Corporate Shill B v. Third Party Candidates That No One Takes Seriously.

Fence sitters definitely exist. Given how close the two parties actually are on so many issues it makes sense that there are some people who care about politics but are undecided about which candidate to support. Fence sitter actually means someone who cares about the country enough to see past the "moral" issues that most of this lousy place votes on and concentrate on areas where such absolutism doesn't exist. People who violently care about politics often seem to be the worst informed.

If these people were actually willing to look past the bullshit moralism and were actually informed, they'd all be voting for third party candidates. American politics IS bullshit moralism.

  • Is that a tacit admission you're voting for Nader?

We haven't yet opened the US presidential vote to the Canadian Annex. Given how many of us would move there in a heartbeat if we had the opportunity, and if George Bush gets 4 more years, maybe we should let Canadians vote in our election. Probably be more fun than us voting in theirs. Although I underrstand that they have a No Preference party running this year...we need a "none of the above" vote here, I swear to god.

True there are flaws in the system, but there are flaws with all candidates...they are human. The trouble is when they play to their "base". More extreme views win out (3rds included).

OCD alphabetizer. Does it go under Jethro or Tull? (Jethro)

Oops. Momentarily forgot he was Canadian. Sorry knk, I know how that can smart. I know next to nothing about Nader's policies, but he seems to get treated in a very similar way to the Liberal Democrats in the UK i.e. a vote for Nader is a wasted vote. I won't get into the whole Bush-Gore thing.

  • *restrains self from spouting anti-Nader tirades*

But really, no matter how admirable his positions may be, he clearly is running for his own ego and to lure away Democrats, and three times is just fucking ridiculous. Nader really is the nadir.
