This will probably warrant banishment, it's that bad...

One time I was half-listening to the radio while I was riding in the car with my dad, and this song came on the classic rock station that I thought was pretty catchy and good, so I was naturally horrified when I discovered it was "Sister Golden Hair" by America.

And I've since embraced the fact that I like it and have listened to it willingly at least twice since then. What can I say? It's a good pop song.

What's wrong with America? I like them. There are a lot of bands to be embarrassed about, but they're not one of them.

  • i love Van Halen...at least its only the david lee roth era...but still...i do

Well, they're often filed alongside people like Bread, Captain & Tennille, The Carpenters and Barry Manilow (all of whom I hate) in the category of early-to-mid-70s radio pap. That's why they might be seen as a guilty pleasure of sorts.

And I don't like A Horse With No Name. That song grates on my nerves.

i really don't like hair metal. ugh.

i appreciate painfully cheesy 90s music like Snap!

i think Joy Division are pretty damn overrated, although i really like the song Disorder.

    Me too. Not gonna lie.

America is a shitty band because at the beginning of their career they just tried to sound like Neil Young and then they drifted into bubbly AM radio garbage.

I'm horribly OCD about my music. Sometimes I can't sleep at night if I know that I have CDs that are out of alphabetical order or if I have mp3s that aren't correctly tagged and added to my iTunes library as well as backed up on my external HD.

The fact that this is even on this forum is a sign that irony deserves to be brutally murdered. Preferably by drawing and quartering.

i think Joy Division are pretty damn overrated, although i really like the song Disorder.

HEATHEN!! Just kidding. It's kind of funny, since even though I really love Joy Division, Disorder's still my favorite song of theirs.

I think The Smiths are pretty damn overrated, myself. Meat Is Murder, aside from the title track, is a really great album, but everything else for the most part is too melodramatic—a lot of their material I'd classify as "proto-emo"—and in a lot of cases, just plain boring. They're a great singles band, I still like songs like What Difference Does It Make?, but they were useless for albums. That's right, I just said it. Ooh burn.

It's not The Smiths' fault that all of these shitty "emo" bands are influenced by them. The New York Dolls inspired hair metal, but they were still a great band.

We've had this conversation in this forum before, CarsCat, and it's pretty much me and you versus everyone else on the Smiths.

  • Yeah, which is why you oughta just let it go... because everyone else is right.

    edited for a horrible typo.

The only Smiths song I've ever knowingly heard is "Stop Me..." How cool is that? Ignorance is bliss.

The Smiths have a fantastic discography. you can't go through cinema without hearing several Smiths songs. It's like not hearing a Stone Roses song. If you don't like them, try Snake River Conspiracy's "How Soon is Now" cover. It's a little faster with the same beat and lyrics. The Smiths are funny, quirky and intuitive... how can't you love them? They are dark, but still... Adam Sandler listens to them in Wedding Singer even if he credits the Cure.

I've never been overly keen on The Smiths, they are quite dull.

I've kept pretty quiet on the subject of the Smiths, because although this is the elitist forum, I don't think you all want to be told that your musical tastes are overall shit compared to mine. But I'll take CarsCat's back on this one. Morrisey has all the charm of a wet hamster. The Smiths have a few good singles, sure, but overall they have all of the appeal of "hang in there, kitty" posters.

I've given the Smiths try after try after try and I'll take the Thin White Duke 101 times out of 100 over the Smiths. For all of Morrisey's desire to be Ian Curtis, he never took the step that cemented Curtis's appeal. And for all the comparisons to Oscar Wilde, my guess is that that is perpetuated by the six Cambridge lads who've read Wilde and fomented by the rest who think that they know what that means.

    Your favorite band sucks.

I wish I could be a college professor who tries to boost his ego by insulting people half his age on an Internet forum.

    fight fight fight!

this is an elitist forum, if we cannot insult each other's tastes, we fail.

that being said, i like the smiths, but morrissey is queerer than a bank vault full of three dollar bills.
