  • Best SONGS of 2006!

    Well, why not?

Here are my top 20 songs for the year!!!

TV On The Radio- A Method
Not necessarily the most impressive song on the album, but the one that instantly grabbed me in the same way Ambulance did on Desperate Youth. Endlessly relistenable and reassuradly poingnant.

    The Flaming Lips- Free Radicals
The coolest fucking song of the year.

    Tom Waits- Long Way Home
On the close side of his sappier songs like Hold On, but still, a beautiful little ditty all the same.

    Destroyer- Painter In Your Pocket
A pop number off of his fantastic last album.

    Neko Case- Star Witness
    Beautiful...

Sonic Youth- Do You Believe in Rapture?
    Cat Power- Love and Communication
    Murder By Death- Brother
    Grizzly Bear- Knife
    Talk Demonic- White Gymnasium
    Beck- The Information
Built To Spill- Goin Aganst Your Mind
    Masayasu Tzboguchi Trio- Sprout
Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3- Belltown Rumble
    Sufjan Stevens- Henney Buggy
Sunset Rubdown- Stadiums And Shrines II
    Swan Lake- Widow's Walk
    Thom Yorke- Skip Divided
Xiu Xiu- P.J. In The Strees of London
King Khan & BBQ Show- Treat Me Like A Dog

    Yep, thems are the best.

(Not in any order, that'd be too hard)

Tom Waits - Fannin Street, and Lie to Me
    Beirut - Elephant's Gun
    Clipse - Trill
    Joseph Arthur - Electrical Storm
TV on the Radio - Province ... though I really like the El-P remix of Hours, too
    Cat Power - The Greatest
Built to Spill - Goin' Against Your Mind
    Sonic Youth - Incinerate
    Spank Rock - Rick Rubin
My Brightest Diamond - Something of an End
Joseph Arthur - Take Me Home
I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness - Lights
The Hold Steady - Southtown Girls
Cold War Kids - Hang Me Up to Dry
    Ratatat - Loud Pipes
The Roots - Can't Stop This

Actually, I think I'm going to have to say Cat Power - The Greatest as the best song of 2006. At least, my personal favorite.
Then The Roots - Can't Stop This, JA - Electrical Storm, and the rest I can't possibly really decide between

If only Sondre Lerche's Phantom Punch came out in 2006! Say It All and Happy Birthday Girl are the greeeaatest.

  • Christ. Wolf Like Me is easily one of the worst if not the worst track on Return To Cookie Mountain, yet its all over MTV and apparantly all over Last. Fm as well.

Playhouses or Let The Devil In are the only ones that might be worse than that. I mean, when you are talking about the 2nd best album of the year, its all relative. But I really don't understand the attration to that song. If Return To Cookie Mountain is a step forward(which it is), then Let The Devil In is a step back.

Not really worst. Just, most accessible. As some review said, it's the most straightforward rock song on the album... which is why it's the single.

Dude, since when is it all over MTV? I didn't even know they made a video for it.

And actually, I like Playhouses a lot. Let the Devil In is rather subpar for the album, but my least favorite track is A Method. Like, seriously. Such a bore.

  • Wolf Like Me is catchy as fuck. It makes me want to move. That's why I love it and that's the attraction.

I don't really see what's not to like about Wolf Like Me besides the fact that it's more straightforward than their other songs.

It's the fact that you're not hip if you like a song that's been released as a single. You should know these things by now, tmills! ;)

Wolf Like Me definitely isn't the worst, but it isn't song of the year either. I think Wash the Day or Dirtywhirl are the worst.

Anyways this was fucking tough but I think this is fairly accurate:
    1.Le Volume Courbe - Harmony
2.Beach House - Master of None
    3.Cat Power - Empty Shell
    4.Magik Markers - Shabbetai Izevi/1666
    5.Joanna Newsom - Emily
    6.Cat Power - Could We
    7.Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Mysteries
8.Le Volume Courbe - I Shall Skip Your Judgment
    9.Cat Power - The Moon
10.TV on the Radio - Playhouses
    11.Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Dudley
12.Jenny Lewis with the Watson Twins - Happy
    13.Beach House - Tokyo Witch
14.Matthew Friedberger - Up the River
15.Bob Dylan - Spirit On the Water
16.TV on the Radio - Province
    17.Fleeting Joys - Where Do I End
18.The Fiery Furnaces - Benton Harbor Blues
    19.TV on the Radio - I Was A Lover
    20.Brazilian Girls - Sweatshop
    21.Ghostface - Kilo
    22.Cat Power - Living Proof
23.Le Volume Courbe - I Killed My Best Friend
    24.Ghostface - 9 Milli Bros.

I can only guess how huge that band is in Australia...

  • I think the TV on the Radio album was vastly overrated. It didn't near reach the mastery of Desperate Youth... you know the rest.

That said, I'm going to sleep. I had an evening full of spelunking and am beat. Literally.

It still doesn't make sense? Why do you like the song? I'm dying with confusion here.

It reminds me of those bands.
