Oh, it's not that bad. I like Allmusic, and i've read this review before, and I hate ms.Hilton more than I hate peeling potatoes, and that's a lot. Their review's are level-headed and quite good, they seem to rate based on the artist and all their albums, it's more of a place to decide which album to get from an artist first rather than a place to find a new band. That's why it doesn't bother me that Paris Hilton's album got 4.5 stars and that Sonic Youth's Experimental Jet set trash and no star got 1.5. It's all from a different perspective, it says that the album will be enjoyable to those who like retarded pop music, and it probably will.

Far better than pitchfork if you ask me.

  • Yeah, I use Allmusic in that way as well. This review just really shocked me...

Same. Well I was shocked when I saw the rating, then I read the review and It kind of made sense.

What's up with all the Pitchfork hating? Sure, they're bitchy and totally bipolar skitsos in their reviews, but I find that it generally is a good representation of what the average indie-crowd is into/the elitist, indie-kid perspective on an album.

  • For all the shit that Pfork takes around here, I read it every day. As far as new music recomendations I am split between them and last.fm, specifically this community. Sure, some of their reviews are poorly written or just plain awful, but the positives far outweigh the negatives. Just as long as people don't take everything they say at face value and actually judge the music themselves. I just started using all music too and their reviews are better written, but I don't get as many new music recommendations from them.

  • Graham... you need to study for your Calc II final instead of playing around on the internet! That's what facebook told me.

Also, your avatar freaks me out, considering it's almost the same one as David Bowman - my radio station boss*

I totally agree! How could they just give it a 4.5? It should have recieved a 4,000,000,000,000,000.5!

  • I dunno, count your blessings... at least all of those places are better than Rolling Stone.

look at this gem of a review I stumbled across. I love the 30something odd comments/reviews disagreeing with him.

Even if you hate J.N. it's hard to make a strong case that Ys is shite, and even if you feel that way, you'd have your work cut out for you (I'm sure it's possible).

I doubt Christian Hoard even listened to the album (which he refers to as an EP HAH!) How do people get paid to do that?

Even if you're not a fan of Paris Hilton you've gotta give the gal props for being such a great musician! She plays the skinflute like a bat outta hell!

  • I used to read Rolling Stone but I stopped because I realized, yes it is trash. However, I think it's hard to argue against the reviews of Rob Sheffield. He really is a great writer, I found I agreed much more with his review of Thom Yorke's "The Eraser" than I did with the Pitchfork review of it. The Eraser
Plus, because he is like their main reviewer he gets more words to work with, unlike their terrible little 5 sentence album reviews. That is one of their big problems, but there are more.

And Adam, I spent like all yesterday studying! Taylor series are just impossible for me to understand. Because I am done with all Calculus forever tommorow at 10pm I have stopped trying to see the "big picture" of what I'm doing and so some of this stuff is real hard. Calc 2 is also like the most failed freshman final here or something like that. Ps. your former boss must have awesome taste in television shows.

  • I have also stopped referring to it as "studying for Calculus" and it will now be refered to as "Doing the Heisman on my Calculus"

  • No one understands Taylor and McLauren series. I got a B in Calculus II because of those things. That and my asshole prof that thought a 89.7 was a B.

Calculus III is really easy, but I too, am done with Calculus!

    On to differential equations!

    (what TV show is that?)

  • Yeah, I'm not sure why I am in Calc 2. The pre-req for the Business school I am trying to get into is Calc I, which I tested out of. I didnt even have to take a Calc class, let alone I chose like the hard weeder freshman course. Oh well, hopefully it will go alright. Ive got like a B+ in the class right now, although I don't think its as good as an 89.7 (That sucks!)

The TV show is Arrested Development, I suggest you check out a couple episodes over winter break. It would be a great decision.

Adam...you seriously haven't watched Arrested Development? I'm ashamed. Let me put this in terms you can understand:

    Arrested Development:TV::Pollo Fundido:Food

    Yeah. It's THAT good.

  • when there are countless things making me hate America... arrested development still makes me feel patriotic.

  • I've seen half of the first season of Arrested Development, but I didn't recognize the characters until it was mentioned.

Nah, it's just me bitching enough for the whole group.

I can give a long, long, long list of reasons as to why I hate that site, and not a single one of them would be that I disagree with the music they rate highly or the music they rate poorly.

"Indie-kids" are stupid. Maybe that's why I don't like Pitchfork.

Meh, not all indie-kids are stupid. There are people in this group who I would call indie-kids and who probably aren't ashamed to be indie-kids. But alot of them are retarded, yes.

  • I'm so indie that I was calling myself an indie kid when I was still a kid and before anyone else was calling themselves indie anything, and before I was listening to modest mouse way before you too.

"I was at pink floyd concerts when you were still swimming around in your daddys balls, kid!"

That was the best response to an amazon review ever.

I think you can listen to "indie" music without being an "indie kid". When I think of an "indie kid" I think of a cocky teenager who only listens to bands because Pitchfork and/or other "indie kids" tell him to. I think of someone who is very pretentious without the musical knowledge to back it up, and I don't think most people here would fit into that category... at least not the regular posters.
