Maybe I just don't read the right magazines, but this was the first time I saw it mentioned in print. It was in an article about the best and worst of 2006, and Business Week's evaluation of the site was that "the jury's still out".
I think they were basically saying that it's hard to tell how profitable the company is going to be in the future in regards to continued growth of users and whether or not it will be eventually purchased by a larger company in order to become competitive with larger social networking sites like MySpace.
I personally like last.fm the way it is, and hope that it isn't purchased by a larger corporation.
I hope not too, but I bet the people who started it sure want to sell it to a larger corporation, especially with all of these recent purchases going on with web companies in Silicon Valley.
It depends whether they buy it, and then demand ninety squillion changes be made to the site. I'd be alright with it if it was bought over by a larger company who left things ticking along the way they are. That's unlikley to happen though, isn't it?
I'm pissed at the server here.. I love the program and the groups but it runs slow as a bus being driven up a treadmill by a senile old prick with no eyes or index fingers filled with obese retarded children sometimes.

Well just look at what happened to YouTube. Google bought it, what, about a month ago? I don't think anything has changed. Granted, it's been pretty recent, but I sure do hope they improve YouTubes shitty ass search feature.
