The usernames of the people in that group are awesome. CrypticThrash in da house!

  • Seriously, is there actually any way to tell the difference between all those ridiculous metal genres?

Without looking on Wikipedia or something, can anyone tell me the difference between say Thrashcore, Grindcore, Deathgrind and Deathrash?

Sure, they all have awesome names, but I swear they all sound the same...

    I forgot my physics book.
  • don't forget about all the emo genres as well... such as my favorite: Emo violence.

I'd like to hear the lyrics of an emo violence song:

"girl you know you make me cry
and cry and cry and cry and cry and cry

then i get pissed off and shoot everyone in my school
    because you made me cry
and cry and cry and cry and cry and cry"

I can tell the difference between Metalcore, Hardcore, Thrash, Classic/Heavy Metal, Grind and Death Metal. Those are the only genres the could be deemed necessary, though I can't see why they can't all be grouped under metal. Most of it sucks though, there's no doubt about that.

  • Loads of genres exist everywhere though. Take pop, for example:

    Twee Pop
    Chamber Pop
    Jangle Pop
    Power Pop
    Bubblegum Pop
    Dream Pop
    Noise Pop
    Baroque Pop

    etc.

Since we (in general) know most about pop, we can tell slight differences and classify bands according to the system. There isn't one person in here that likes hardcore (REALLY). I listen to a few bands, but my extent of knowledge doesn't go far at all.

The only hardcore band worth a piece of shit is Refused. Everything else sounds like plastic cookie-cutter aggression, or just annoying.

I don't think I know the subtle differences between Chamber pop, Twee Pop and Indie Pop, it all sounds pretty damn similiar to me.

  • I can differentiate pop somewhat. I usually don't bother, it seems like more trouble than it's worth, but I could.

But forms of metal? Yeah...no. I really just don't know any. I'm sure if I tried to talk about it, I'd come off completely ignorant, but that's just as well, because it all seems pretty shitty.

I've gotten my dad to start appreciating my music. He liked The New Pornographers' "The Laws Have Changed" quite a lot, which was a big step considering the most tolerable thing he listens to is REM, and Michael Stipe 's voice completely ruins them for me.

That was then, this is dumb.

Hey man, Fugazi rawks (I think they're called hardcore, or something like that. Actually, they just sound like punk to me). And uh, there's Sunny Day Real Estate. Aren't they hardcore? Or are they emo? (Maybe emo-core? post-hardcore? post-emo-core? post-hardcore-emo-funk-core? [I love this game])

Fugazi and Sunny day real Estate are emo if I recall. Or well, Fugazi is only associated with the movement, they really are just punk.

But for the sake of it Fugazi are pre-soapbox-hard-hard-neo-post-triathloncore

    @andgoodbye

REM are the best! The New Pornographers are also the best! Hooray for your dad.

  • Yeah, Sunny Day Real Estate is pretty emo. But the initial "emotive hardcore" sort of emo, not the more recent interpretation. So in effect, emo-core, possibly?

The New Pornographers are the best. I was proud of him. REM I should like, but can't. *shrug*

That was then, this is dumb.

I don't know... Sunny Day Real Estate are pretty emo. Their pre-Enigk-turns-born-again-Christian stuff (mainly Diary, How It Feels to Be Something On and further are more proggy and stuff) seems pretty emo to me, like, fitting into today's standards of emo.

    ...except, you know, good.

  • Don't confuse the nu-emo with the old. (Nu-emo being acts such as Fall Out Boy and co). The emo acts that stick to tradition (meaning more post hardcore tendencies) seem to be quite good.

It's not really my steeze, but I still respect it for being decent.

Sunny Day Real Estate are amazing. Diary and How It Feels to be Something On are both triple awesome. Their other records are good too. (some great SDRE tracks to check out are "Pillars", "Song About an Angel", "In Circles", "Snibe", "Guitar and Video Games"... I could go on forever). I separate them totally from the "nu-emo" bands of today, even though at the time they probably would have fit into the category.

I remember saying in the late 90s when I was first getting into Sunny Day Real Estate that "emo" was going to be the next big thing to a friend of mine, and he was like, "What the hell are you talking about?" Just call me Nostradamus! Too bad my prediction ended up being a horrible horrible thing.

PS: How can Michael Stipe's voice ruin R.E.M.? It's one of the best things about them.

  • Honestly, the only Sunny Day Real Estate song I'm really big on it "Rain Song"; I kind of have to be in the right mood to like the rest of it.

*shrug* Perhaps I just don't like REM much, then.

That was then, this is dumb.
  • And you're from Georgia!
