Hey, I like movies too...

  • The cigarette throat and cd throwing cenobytes in Hellraiser 3 always make me laugh.

So I just newly found out there's a Max Payne movie. Starring Mark Wahlberg.
    What. The. Fuck.

  • I cannot wait for AMC's Monsterfest to strt on Friday. Apparently this year they're calling it Fearfest, but it'll still be beautiful cheese, 24 hours, for seven straight days. I'm starting to foam a little.

What is the last horror movie that actually scared someone?

And I remember renting Suspiria with the tagline "The Only Thing More Terrifying Than The Last 12 Minutes Of This Film Are The First 92." I think that I laughed at every death scene. As a society, are we desensitized?

  • Last House on the Left made cringe, I'm gonna say two times. I cannot remember being scared by a film since reaching my teen years. As a kid Alien, the Abyss, Poltergeist III(never saw the others as a youth), and the Haunting scared me. So the last movie was probably The Haunting, via 1999, which I saw when it came out. I'd like to watch it again to see if it holds up at all to the shivers it gave me as an 11 year old. Probably not.

Audition. Basically, I'm a pussy when it comes to torture and gore. Kinda got freaked out when Oh Dae Su cut off his own tongue in Oldboy too.

Before that though, probably the first Evil Dead, when I was like sixteen. (caught me off guard; was expecting a comedy)

    Don't watch much horror though ;_;

  • You must watch Masters of Horror: Imprint , also by Takashi Miike. The plot, as one might expect, is fucking retarded, but a good (and short) torture fix none the less. A torrent shouldn't be hard to find.

I was intensely frightened by the film "House on Haunted Hill" when I saw it in grade five. I distinctly remember covering my eyes with my hands. I don't think a movie has scared me since then.

With you on that. I do not like torture and gore, and even though I really did like was enthralled by Oldboy, I turned my head during the teeth pulling scene and the tongue cutting scene. Too much for me to take.

I don't think I could take a Miike film. I'm tempted to try Ichi the Killer, but I always chicken out. I don't mind blood, but I hate things with eyes, organs, and torture.

eyes, organs, torture? Tyler, wanna watch "Un Chien Andalou?" It'll make you a debaser... (Just trying to tie this back to music).

It seems like the two current routes to fear are - cheap, startling and -gore and the unimaginable.

Wasn't "The Thing from Another World" scary when it came out?

(I do cringe at certain moments of Requiem for a Dream)

Seen Un Chien Andalou. Did catch me quite off guard. I had no idea what was coming, our film professor just showed it to us in class one day. Never understood why people were freaked out about Requiem for a Dream. Yeah, it was harrowing, but I didn't get scared.

  • I dunno, the dildo scene at the end of the movie is kinda disturbing. Could be that I just feel great shame for the people watching and pity for Marion. Other than that I was just too enthralled by the kick ass, fist-pumping motif by Kronos Quartet...

Dildo scene is disturbing... and sexy at the same time.

  • Uh...seriously? That would disturb me still more.

Recently I've seen some lighter stuff.
Firstly, Global Metal - well done documentary bout metal scene in countries like: India, China, Japan, Indonesia etc. Definitely worth checking out for all headbanging Elitists. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1249171/

Then, "Tenacious D: Pick Of Destiny". Not as good as it could be, but still it was a nice weed flick.

And the last one is "Tropic Thunder". Only good scenes are with Cruise. Yeah I know I've said some bad things about this dude, and I still think he's an asshole, but well. His performance as Les Grossman is great.

Tetsuo the Ironman? My oldest son had me watch that with him a little bit before he moved to LA. I still sleep with the lights on. Me & horror movies simply do not mix.

I'm strictly a lightweight when it comes to movies anymore. Most recent rentals were John Water's A Dirty Shame (a contender for worst movie of all time) and a cute little German/Turkish joint called "Im Juli" with Moritz Bleibtreu (Run Lola Run) and Christiane Paul. Kinda sweet & romantic, but funny, too.

Now working through the Freaks & Geeks dvds with Arrested Development up next.

You will love both of those shows.

Regarding Tetsuo the Ironman, was it really that scary? I've only seen the trailer, but it looks kind of silly.

And amen on that John Waters movie. Someone in this group tried to tell me I had no sense of humor when I said it was one of the worst things I have ever seen. Give me a break, A Dirty Shame is terrible!

I believe that person was me!

Seriously, though, it is awful. I wasn't debating that. I just think that it's so incredibly bad that it transcends being bad and becomes completely brilliant. John Waters knows exactly what he's doing.

I got round to watching The Fall at the tail end of last week. I was impressed with it, it didn't quite live up to some of the reviews I'd read but the cinematography was fantastic!

The next film on my list is Burn After Reading, I was meant to go and see it at the cinema on it's release but as yet haven't managed to get there. I hope it's as good as it stands to be.

Also, I've been watching a programme called Dead Set this week on E4. It's a story about a zombie outbreak in the UK centering around the Big Brother house where the few survivors are holed up. It's well worth the watch if any of you guys can track it down... there are various torrents scattered about, but you can also watch it for free on the 4OD service available through the above link.

It finishes tonight, making it around 2-2½ hours long in total. I'm looking forward to seeing how it ends!

    *edit* here's the trailer...

That film is so inconsequential it actually cancels itself out.

Oh, is that what that is?
I basically saw Davina McCall on the advert while flicking, and quickly changed the channel in terror.
I'm gonna watch it to take my mind off my man flu.

No, but I wanna. There's no way it'll play over here, so I might try to catch it in Madrid next week.

I don't think that I'll play in Poland either. P2P could be solution for me.
Anyway I saw Adoration by Atom Egoyan few weeks ago during Warsaw Film Festival. It was good and funny but more accessible than rest of his movies. Anyway it's forth checking out if any of You is into long, boring talking movies.

Well, it was still funny enough that we laughed at a number of things, but where once Waters could shock and outrage as well as amuse, I thought it fell flat despite the Selma Blair character.

As far as Freaks/Geeks and AD, this is the second time through on DVD for both. Like many, we rarely saw F&G in its original run, but we never missed AD on TV.
