    The Firemen's Ball (Miloš Forman, 1967) 4/5

    I absolutely love that movie.

I liked it quite a bit. I need to see more Czechoslovak films.

Here, here I found this on rym and I agree completely:

    Problems:

    1) Downey Jr. tried to act like Johnny Depp
    2) Sherlock Holmes isn't from America. Work on the accents.
    3) Some of the special effects were cool, but abused many times.
    4) That "fight-predicting" is total bullshit. It's just corny.
    5) I thought Sherley was a detective right? I was expecting something I could, you know, try to figure out but it was just action with a litterature classic.
    6) You do not, you just don't, survive a fall of +300 meters. Even if it's water and you have something that helps you breathe underwater. May I remind you that the water is approximately 0° warm. May I remind you, that no matter what you fall on, 300 meters is too much. Unless you're Jason Statham.

I can only add to this that my wife wanted to leave after 20 minutes and so I'm obliged to accompany her to see Polanski's Carnage and the other thing: for some mysterious reason apart from all shenanigans this SH has some classically classical Moriarty. No idea why.

Agreed on all points. I'd add that the movie basically raced through the increasingly convoluted plot too fast for it to make much sense or for me to care what was happening. It was basically a bunch of cool looking setpieces strung together without much rhyme or reason. And they really shouldn't even call it Sherlock Holmes. It's basically a superhero movie with English accents slapped on.

If we can hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate.
  • Anyone seen this? Gonna watch it tonight.

I want to see it! Where's it playing?

  • On my computer! C'mon Robbie, join us all in our moral vacuum. The air is thin, but the illicit pleasures are without end.

  • He was also the voice behind

    Hope that's not overlooked.

    Best film of 2012?

    I'll go walking in circles,
While doubting the very ground beneath me

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, a pleasant surprise - especially from a Swedish director.

  • Recent goodies:

Day of the Dead - 9/10
    Paper Moon - 10/10
House of Flying Daggers - 8/10
The Outlaw Josey Wales - 10/10
The Thin Red Line - 9/10
    A History of Violence - 9/10

Anyone seen Cronenberg's newest film, A Dangerous Method? Was thinking of going to see it when it comes out here next week.

A Dangerous Method is well acted and shot but it's completely for nobody. Newbies to the subject will find it odd, folks that already are into the subject already know this story.

I saw Day of the Dead recently too. I thought it was the weakest part. Except for Rhodes. Joe Pilato just stole the show.

  • I thought Day was ever so slightly better than Dawn, and Pilato's hilarious overacting is a big part of the reason why, + the more character-driven plot and gorier violence totally appealed to me. The ol' Romero "SOCIAL COMMENTARY LOL" was far less subtle though, but that was about the only thing that really irked me about it.

Haven't seen Night yet, but it's on the cards.

    Next one on the list:

A religious sect led by Gustav Weil hunts all women suspected of witchcraft, killing a number of innocent victims. Young Katy, Gustav's niece, will involve herself in a devilish cult, and become an instrument of Justice in the region.

Sounds like an instant classic to me.

Just watched "I Think We're Alone Now" on Netflix and... wow. This movie is awesome. Take two parts mental instability, add a dash of stalker, and top it off with 80s pop star Tiffany. Magnificent.

  • Oh fuck yes.

Good film by Ferrara? That would be end of the world.

  • The world is ending, everything's shit, everything's chaos, my name's willem dafoe, i'll save you. Sounds foolproof.

Killer of Sheep may actually be the most boring film I've ever seen. You can tell it was made by a film student who had been watching too many 40's Italian movies.

there's a canadian film from the 90s called "last night" that is exactly what "4:44" is.

  • Pretty sure I've seen it. But I thought this looked like an interesting take on the subject. I liked his reaction on seeing someone hurl themselves to their death - it seemed quite authentic.

I just watched Hitchcock's The Wrong Man. Not a big fan of it, the story just felt ridiculous (even more absurd that it was based on fact) and Fonda gave a really boring and unconvincing performance. Vera Miles emotional turn seemed false to me as well. I don't really understand why Scorsese and Godard like it so much.
