    Happy New Year, folks!
    For new members, here’s how it goes. Below there are some themes and a list of pairs. Pick a theme, find your name, and make a mix for the person you're matched with. You can discuss the theme beforehand with your partner or not, it’s up to you. Easy as that.

    Please read the Important Post in the Forum if you want a refresher on technical stuff and membership policy. (http://www.last.fm/group/The+Monthly+Mixtape/forum/45288/_/221537 )

    Every month, we have four optional theme categories. Categories stay the same, themes change monthly. Consider them suggestions if you don't know what kind of music to put together. Interpret the theme however you like. But most of the longtime members are fanatically creative in applying a theme.

    This month I’m happy to introduce the first inductee of the Hermetic Order Of Alchemists. Give beautifulwaste a shout for posting the most mixes in 2011 (14!). I reminded beautifulwaste of her most recent theme suggestions, some of which went back to 2010, and she seemed surprised to hear they were hers. Anyway, her theme for your consideration is: The Plant Kingdom. Which, back in Jan 2010 was hot off the heels of an "Animal Kingdom" mix. Ah, memories...

    Our themes this month are:
    1. "Elementary" (is this too easy?) -
    .....EARTH, WIND, AIR & FIRE.....
    2. "Elixir of Life" (a.k.a. immortal themes that will not die) -
    .....ONE INSTRUMENT (your choice).....
    3. "Hermetic Order of Alchemists," no. 1: beautifulwaste -
    .....THE PLANT KINGDOM.....
    4. "Philosopher's Stone" (more challenging) -
    .....CREATE A STORY..... Song titles, read in sequence as a sentence (or paragraph?), tell a story. Bonus points if the mix flows nicely from song to song & manages to avoid being TOO eclectic.

    Well done to Arty Pharty on his succession to the throne, may his reign be long and fruitful. Now down to business...

    Plenty of good choices this month, so much so that i'm tempted to do at least another one but for the first i've opted for 'create a story' or in my case it's a rough musical rendition of the Lord's Prayer. Don't worry, i'm no God botherer looking for recruits, in fact i'm a man with no invisible means of support...

    Once upon a time in the West a stranger rode in on horseback. He took the silence carried by the wind down the dusty road like it was the thorn piercing his coat; threw it on the ground. And then you went away.

    Sam left the button of his coat undone, steppin' out three steps from the bar, Hopper and his gang following close behind. Drunk again. In the tumbling dawn light their eyes fall frozen...Clint Eastwood. Looking like danger. Or else Heaven or Las Vegas.

    "Get in or get out," he said. "Out of town, I should have said." He shook his head. Sarah shook her head. The cigarette girl just shook. "I smoked the wrong end of a cigarette," she said.

    "Stop grinding your teeth," said Telegram Sam, squinting skyward. "As long as there is whiskey in the world, we'll be around."

    "Nobody move. This is a robbery," the sheriff stuttered and fumbled, strolling down 3rd, toward the one blood bank in the county. So there I was. I did it. I shot the sheriff. So what. Did I just do that or was it Jim Carrey?

    All Hell broke loose, all guns blazing, as if by magic Main Street could be anything. Appomatox whorehouse; ocean of noise; violence in the streets; dancing in the street; panic in Detroit; the Devil's shooting gallery. It was written in blood, the last shot ringing in my ears. "We've gotta get out of this place," I could have told you. But you were already gone in the beginning. Do you remember?

    How did I get out alive? No one makes it out alive. Not even me.

    Thanks, Artephiusfm, for inducting me into the 'Hermetic Order Of Alchemists', for making too many mixtapes! It seems that I really need to get a life :P

    It was difficult to decide between the themes, but since the Plant Kingdom doesn't come up very often as a choice ...

  • Here's my mix for oz_tokyoeyes.

    I really wanted to tackle one the tougher story theme, but my hard drive crashed last month so I'd been using my wife's computer...I still had access to all my music, but the organization was just lacking. So, needless to say, the story theme was out.

    But hey, plants. They're groovy. So we went with that. Despite the prevalence of 'flower' songs, I made a point to not get too flowery, or flower power-y. Some power, for sure. Some power pop for sure. And what was I thinking not using 'Honeysuckle Blue"?! Bah, hindsight!

    Be forewarned, the Spinal Tap song will get stuck in your head. The riff of Garden of My Mind will melt your face (the original's even just a touch nastier). The ZZ Top song was off their first album, well before they started making videos, so if you're just gonna write them off as that 'Legs' band, you're making a biiiiig mistake. Just sayin'.

    And as a side note to artephiusfm -- I'm digging the multiple themes. They're fun, and just the fact there are tougher challenges available mean no one's used the easy ones yet. Well, we'll see what the zero-hour brings, haha. Keep it up!

    My "Musical Garden" Playlist

    Here is my plant themed playlist for 01010100.

    I had a really tough time with this one. Not because I had a small amount of things to choose but because I couldn't decide on which ones to take out. It would've been way too long otherwise.

    I don't know if it really flows together, but I did what I could with it. It's an eclectic bunch, but I bunch I really enjoyed listening to.
