Traveled halfway across the continent to see Opeth 3 times over the last decade, loved every album more than the last... Bloodbath transcended the confines of reality, and respect Mikael more than most anyone else alive... sorry to hear of his personal misfortunes.. but although this album has merit and I enjoy a couple songs I can't bring myself to listen through front to back... the metal "god" of Opeth "is dead"... ironic huh? A sad day for us all... If you want to hear exceptionally original metal (not my band) that doesn't use distortion or growls/screams either check out the band Fejd!

I completely agree with Hadakan...I don´t even think there´s anything else to add, except for the fact that people should try to "grow up" a little more and appreciate the variety of music that´s out there...you may like or dislike the album, but asking for more Death metal from Opeth is unfair, specially having demostrated that they are the best musicians I´ve listened in a long time. Let´s appreciate their feelings about music, let´s respect what they want to offer...come on!!!!!!!!!!!!

Heritage album is a definition of 'progressive' music itself. It's a very successful and avant-garde combination of the progressive rock of the late 60s-70s and the contemporary opeth-style progressive metal. It's a piece of art. I love it.

This is not about disliking (or even liking for that matter) Heritage based on its artistic merits. If you think it's bad music... fair enough. It's not like anyone really cares. What irks me and what I took this group to be partially about are people who cannot stand Heritage because it is not progressive death Opeth usually goes for. Such a position is really silly and reeks of unwarranted entitlement issues. No band in the world has any obligation to exclusively make music YOU want them to.

I would like to hear more progressive death metal from Opeth. There are enough progressive metal/rock bands out there. And though Opeth efforts are great, their last album is no much for Blackwater Park.

Well, considering the title, I thought this group serves as a small discussion about the album... anyway, saying that when someone doesn´t like Heritage means he is not a fan of opeth... that´s just total bullshit. Just like you said, who enjoys one or more of the albums can call himself a fan..... And about the Damnation issue - I put it to a group just between Heritage and the other albums - It is not excellent, but it certainly is good. I just feel like some songs are too similar and fade together... again, it is not because of growls or death metal, just check my profile and see yourself I don´t actually care about that stuff.

Then people that dislike this album becouse of the difference shouldn't be called "fans". But I think, every guy who enjoys one of Opeth`s albums or all of the past records has the right to call himself a "fan" of Opeth. And now we have disappointed fans of this band. This is a group for all the people who enjoy the Heritage album, understanding its difference and importance.

I obviously read the shouts in here (including the negative ones). However, the key issue here is that it is about Opeth _fans_. Weren't they already listening to progressive rock (Damnation notwithstanding)? I could see it as a quality issue - "The Heritage album is a trial for the Opeth fans because it's very bad." However, what is implied here (if I'm not mistaken) is that trial stems from the fact that the album is, oh the horror, different. Here it all breaks down, because "different" is kind of what Opeth do and fans should know about it by now, don't you think?

Just take a look at the shouts with negative opinion about this album. The new album is very diferent from the others, it is a big step forward. It`s just difficult to understand.

I truly cannot fathom how can Heritage be a trial for Opeth fans. Anyone care to explain?

Who does give a fuck about growls or death metal? That´s really not what the problem is about.... The problem is called composition. It seems to me like they just wanted to make the dynamics (or contrast between dark/soft, fast/slow) perfect and they just built the whole album around that concept - but the result is just mad skipping between those passages. I don´t blame Opeth from not making interesting riffs and ideas but they can´t connect them properly and smoothly like they could earlier. Listen to "Ghost of Perdition" and then to some of the "Heritage" album stuff to see what i mean. On "Heritage" it goes like - slow, soft part - BANG - heavy riffing madness. I have to mention that I don´t completely dislike the album, I fell in love with title song and the last instrumental, "Devil´s Orchard" is fun psychedelia and truly exceptional with the video clip. Others just have good parts here or there but overally, average. P.S.: I wrote only my opinion, not saying that as a fact.

This is one of the bands that can do whatever they want to without failing. And if you've got something to say, go and do something better, then come again to criticize. Aside from that, subtract Morbid Angel from Opeth's music and you get "Heritage" - 70's proggy rock.

great album [4] So many progressive fans are not enough progressive to undrestand new Opeth stuff. Sad.

It's like in the book of Hiob. ;) It's a trial for Opeth fans - only the true ones will be rewarded in the future. Btw. great album [3] And my comment it's only a joke

Its not even about the growls. It's just a boring album. There is nothing that makes this album stand out against Watershed in any way. Its mellow all the way through. I wouldn't even call that progressive. Opeth needs to remember that they made themselves as a DEATH METAL band. This is not Death Metal.

The new album is great and if people feel the need to bash it because the lack of growls, they should just go find a generic death metal band and leave Opeth for us open minded music fans. Opeth's sound has always been constantly evolving and after hearing Watershed, I knew exactly which direction they were going to next.
