VampyreAngel I think this is one of the best Onion articles I've read http://www.theonion.com/articles/trusted-sistine-chapel-janitor-convicted-of-sexual,27934/

8GotH8 Well, it seems like nobody knows an argument, so the one that i used is from the book something from nothing by Lawrence Krauss.

VampyreAngel "That's just stupid".

8GotH8 Has anyone else encountered this argument: "Energy can not be created nor destroy so, by such logic, we can imply that there's a god=energy". I've argued against this assumption but, it never seems to satisfy believers. Does anyone have any arguments that might work?

CastitusLilium leaving this group because really i dont have a problem with christianity so much as judaism (no anti-semitic)

VampyreAngel Evolution isn't a force that guides our steps, it's a mechanism. The fact is humans have long found a way around it - obviously it still affects human populations, but not as much. Do we need a fighting pit to sort out who of us can survive when we can nuke our way through the arena? While I agree that a big number of humans wouldn't survive in a wild wild world, I'm fairly sure that in the time it would take for natural selection to take effect (in this unrealistic scenario), we could turn ourselves into superhuman cyborgs
fevereiro 2012 -
8GotH8 But takin' monetary problems out of the equation and based purely on biological factors...
fevereiro 2012 -
CastitusLilium yea brute force and genuine power are two completely different things thats why capitalism does a shitty job of embodying real social darwinism and the will to power
fevereiro 2012 -
VampyreAngel You probably mean social darwinism. Hard to discuss it, especially since the concept has been contaminated by its association with Nazism. In a very short answer, the first thing I'd point out is that such a "survival race" wouldn't be applied with biological criteria, so, if anything, it wouldn't really result in a survival of the fittest, but of the richest or more ruthless. I can only see this as a theoretical idea, and not a very good one, to be honest.
fevereiro 2012 -
8GotH8 Since we were talking about morality in the Good Vs. Evil thread... I was wondering what people think here about the idea of a Darwinian world. Is it better for humanity or worse? Is the idea that we all deserve to live more moral than the idea that a few, yet better society is better?

ESF-12 A quick quote for you all "Patti: Homosexuality is a sin, Lacey, and it is in black and white in the Bible. Lacey: So is not treating your body like a temple. And ladies should have their head covered. And in Deuteronomy, a marriage is only valid if the woman is a virgin, and she should be executed if she is not... and that anyone who commits adultery should be stoned to death. In Mark, divorce is prohibited. I assume for homosexuality, you're referring to Leviticus 18:6 "you shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female. It is an abomination." A similar verse occurs two chapters in Leviticus 20:13
outubro 2011 -

ESF-12 "A man who sleeps with another man is an abomination and should be exeuted." Leviticus is a holiness code written 3,000 years ago. it also includes prohibitions against round haircuts, tattoos, working on the Sabbath, wearing garments of mixed fabrics, eating pork or shellfish, getting your fortune told, and even playing with the skin of a pig. (There goes football!). I believe in morality, which is doing right regardless of what i am told... not in religion, which is doing what i am told regardless of what is right. Your welcome to your own interpretation of the Bilbe and of politics, of course, but for me, I need maore then "the Bible says so" to justify certain things in this world and certainly to judge them."

blackadder77 Glenn Beck is like Bill O'reilly, but even better.

VampyreAngel No problems for me. The Holy Prepuce is Jesus' foreskin.
setembro 2011 -
LeaTelamon I don't know who she is nor what the Holy Prepocue is. On a more serious sidenote, are others getting issues viewing the ACP site? I just get transferred to some blog site saying the ACP domain name is for sale. WTF?
agosto 2011 -
VampyreAngel Who's Glenn Beck?
agosto 2011 -

ESF-12 would it be wrong to (out of the blue) start burning down churchesn and smashing crucifixs?
agosto 2011 -
blackadder77 Glenn Beck is a mormon?
agosto 2011 -
VampyreAngel Which part confused you?
agosto 2011 -
LeaTelamon Que?
agosto 2011 -
VampyreAngel I think my next post in the ACP site should be about the Holy Prepuce and St Catherine of Siena who claimed to wear it as a ring. Most disturbingly hillarious thing I've read in a while.
agosto 2011 -
VampyreAngel I don't know, but he had sent me a fb request which I accidentally declined.
agosto 2011 -
LeaTelamon Kind of unrelated, but who is this "Antichrist" posting on the ACP site?
agosto 2011 -
VampyreAngel Yeah, but you'd spend a fortune in training and ship-building.
agosto 2011 -
RageofAnath I'd much rather use money than have to trade and barter for everything, that's for sure.

VampyreAngel I learned something interesting today. The most exalted St Augustine became a christian only after emperor Theodosius issued a decree of death against manichaeism-his former religion. Such unwillingness to be a martyr is not a great trait for such a revered saint.
julho 2011 -
LeaTelamon Not anymore I guess, since that discussion died out anyway. I just wanted to clarify to alex what I was trying to say.
julho 2011 -
VampyreAngel Ok. Does it matter though?
julho 2011 -
LeaTelamon Basically, I am trying to infer to that everything around us is given social meaning and we cannot talk about anything without also referring to this social meaning, in a true Kantianist way.
julho 2011 -
LeaTelamon I think people are reading my post too literary - rather I am trying the whole gender is also sexed idea which also goes for nation-states. Nation-states include geographical areas but we also associate these areas with something very specific (Scandinavia is cold - yet in relation to what? There is a large difference between Skåne and Lappland in Sweden).
julho 2011 -
alexhol124 "As for the Chile vs Germany debate".. woah, calm down, there was never a "vs", I just meant to say that i didn't find the idea that people with certain biological caracteristics are better suited to live in certain places (not "belong" there) silly or irrational. I never tried to imply that people should be forced to live somewhere, and I don´t think that the guy who first wrote about it meant it that way. (I hope that came out clear enough).
julho 2011 -
VampyreAngel Nonsense. We need an ice age to fend off global warming. Also, Japan is clearly souther than Scandinavia (and I doubt it has similar climate)! You're right there are preconceptions though I think certain preconceptions do have a basis. So if Scandinavians are considered "cold", relating it to the climate is more of a random analogy. Japanese are often viewed in similar manner (at least here) but more because of the social structure, history, etc (which is probably as mediocre a standard as the weather). I guess a certain type of personality is thought as part of national identity. I think it's quite reasonable, it's easier for people to categorise things. It's not ideal but it is convenient.
julho 2011 -
LeaTelamon We have certain preconceptions about other countries (that we know of) and these preconceptions always come into play when we disucss the differences between countries, and they also play a major role in the countries' nationalism. For example, many Scandinavian countries are considered to be "cold" and this has even become reflected upon the people living there being considered "cold" as well. Yet we don't see this notion about many North East Asian countries that share the same climate as Scandinavia (China, Japan, Korea).
julho 2011 -
LeaTelamon As for the Chile vs Germany debate... It was never pointed out what climates were referred to, rather that we should simply understand through the mentioning of countries alone that Chile is a very hot country and Germany is a relatively cool country, thus reinforcing certain ideas about the countries. That is what I mean. What I'm trying to say is very similar to that as much as there are differences between gender and sex, sex is also gendered because of our preconceptions of the sexes, i.e. men have penises.
julho 2011 -
LeaTelamon You prefer global warmining, then?
julho 2011 -
VampyreAngel I guess Lea considers "Chile" vague for exactly that reason, but I think so long as everyone understands what the point was, a certain level of vagueness can be allowed. More to the point, I'd like to see a new ice age and the Eskimos claiming every land above the tropic of Cancer belongs to them:P
julho 2011 -
LeaTelamon Could as well just said Europe and South America.
julho 2011 -
LeaTelamon MakeNine, I am not so sure about that, since two specific countries were mentioned instead of geographical regions, denoting the national differences in climate between the two as a part of these countries' nationalism. As for post-modern, now scholars argue we are in a post post-modern time. Modern stems from modernism, about 19th to early 20th century. Post-modern is 20th to 21th century, post post-modern is 21th century and onward pretty much. And in theory, these classifications mean batshit... I just seem to use them anyway :/ Maybe I should've used the term post-war instead, as nationalism as an idea wasn't really that reinforced until WWI and II, that were both wars fought on the premise of nationalism.
julho 2011 -
VampyreAngel A few days ago I read in a Dawkins book (the Devil's Chaplain) that whenever I hear someone say the word post-modern I should stop them and ask them what it means:P
julho 2011 -
LeaTelamon Anyway, what I was intending to say was that Swedish comedian Jonas Gardell just wrote a pretty funny (and thoughtful) comment on his Facebook page going something like this in English: God created humans in his image. That we know, but according to what evolutionary phase? Cromagnon? Neanderthal? Primate? Just wondering.
julho 2011 -
LeaTelamon Important to note the difference between state as a social territory and a territory based on climate. They are two different things but people constantly confuse them as evidenced below. I completely agree with Benedict Anderson's assertion that the belief in the nation-state is currently the post-modernist world's world religion. Luckily the power of the nation-state is waning, but only slowly.
