Very interesting, and cool to hear that. :) Never heard the Noëmi Nadelmann cover... *does so* And right you are. What a finish! "AAAAAAAAAAAA! ...AAAAAAAAAAA! ...AAAAAAAAAAAAA!" XD And lol at the three 10 out of 10s the judges gave her!

Case in point: Noemi Nadelmann's technically flawless but interpretation-wise horribly sloppy performance of Ghost Love Score (or well, an abridged, rather silly disco-style arrangement of it) that you can find on YouTube. Apparently, she didn't even care to really learn the words. Don't be misled to think it was criticised less than Anette Olzon's version. Regardless of your background, respecting the original song (mood, emotions, composition) and taking it seriously is key.

In fact, every person who really seems to know what they're talking about (the only way I can form an opinion about someone's professionality is my subjective assessment of their words and actions) has only praise for her; all the criticism seems to stem from fangirls on the Internet who are somehow opposed to her or favour other female metal vocalists; that's makes them a little difficult to take seriously, don't you think? The verdict "overrated" is an overly easy way to bash someone, and well, overrated. ;) Or at least too often abused. Another interesting point: Not only are the rules and demands in the opera world so different from those in the metal world that crossing over is not a trivial feat, the same is true vice versa: A professional opera singer cannot necessarily (or rather, not at all) interpret an operatic rock/metal song every bit as well or even better than an experienced operatic rock/metal singer, certainly not without serious preparation and empathy for the genre.

nDroae: I'm not an opera expert either, but from what I've heard about professional opera singers and what Tarja has said in interviews, she doesn't even practice her voice all that intensely. Two to three hours a day are intense for her standards. I wonder what exactly people base their opinion on that with more intense training, she couldn't be a full-blown professional opera singer who is more than mediocre and in fact has a rather unique voice and style (an important asset).

I said that because I've seen so many opera fans bash her for whatever flaws she has (I don't even know, or care, what they are), compared to the great sopranos of opera. I don't know what bearing these flaws would have on her success if she pursued that course, but as far as I've been told, she'd be considered mediocre... presumably a mediocre opera singer can still have a career in opera, but to choose that over what she has now would be baaaad. :D

Oh, there ARE metal singers who have successfully crossed over to opera (she has mentioned one such case herself, and I've seen another case mentioned on a classical music forum), so I think she could do that too if she wanted, but she's happy this way, bringing the best of both worlds to us so to speak, so why bother? :-) I love that she does so many crossover events (involving classical/church/Christmas music, film music, opera, musical, rock/metal and her own music) these days, I just wish she'd do such events all over the world, not just in Finland and Argentina. Energetic rock and contemplative acoustic concerts back-to-back ftw!

Absolutely, she is where she belongs. She can bring opera to us, but if she crossed over to their world she'd be judged by standards that don't matter to us, and it I think it would be bad for everyone. :-/

Kata: That was a one-off event (actually three crossover concerts in a row), and she sang only one aria from the opera. Tarja is not an opera singer, and she has never had a role in one. In an interview, she said that if she wanted to do that, she'd need to focus on an opera career exclusively - you just can't do that on the side, like Noche Escandinava (the only occasion I know where she has not used a microphone); opera is too demanding for that. She's decided to stay in the rock music business and pursue a career there; the right decision in my opinion, especially because it allows her to write her own songs, too, and more creative freedom overall. She's a rocker. :)
