Where speed metal and hardcore warned us of the apocalypse, death metal assumed it as society wailed on toward demise with a whimper and not any drastic warning-type motion. Civilization has become decadent and valueless, and escaping the cycle of rebellion death metal projects a world before the moralization of values, in which personal values can triumph. Death metal denies inherent value in tone and ideal, and deconstructs the overbearing sense of world and social bounds around us with primal music bearing complexity in texture and theme.

From 1987-1993 a powerful subset of the death metal scene flourished in Sweden , thanks to a comfortingly depressing climate, public funding and a society able to tolerate such nihilistic music. These bands took the simple chunky blasting of American death metal bands and put its structural evolution to a new type of sound that relied on the fast strumming of chords and heavy digital distortion to overlap harmonic layers into smooth, columnar sounds.

Sweden has produced more death metal than any other country. Two towns in particular became two of the greatest death metal producing sites ever, each with their own unique sound. One city is Gothenburg, producing melodic death bands such as At The Gates, Dark Tranquillity, and In Flames. The other city Stockholm, produced most of its death metal during the formative period of the genre (1986-1994). Where American death metal was influenced by the straight-up Slayer inspired Florida or New York sound, Stockholm metal was darker, more atmospheric, melodic, with horror-inspired fantasy themed lyrics and buzzsaw guitars that reminded more of European proto-death bands like Kreator, Bathory, Mercyful Fate, and Celtic Frost.
