We think female fronted metal is not a genre.

Saying a metal band is a female fronted one is not very informative, musically speaking. Indeed, this tag...

Why have I created this group?

- because female fronted metal is not a genre;
Saying a metal band is a female fronted one is not very informative, musically speaking. Indeed, this tag includes a lot of genres like doom metal [Draconian], symphonic [Epica], gothic [Lacuna Coil], nu metal [Otep], melodic death [Arch Enemy]...

- because I think this tag has no use at all;
It's far more useful to describe the music we're actually listening to because, even if we want to hear a female voice, Angela Gossow [Arch Enemy], Otep Shamaya [Otep] or Tairrie B. [My Ruin] don't sing like Floor Jansen [After Forever], Andrea Dätwyler [Lunatica] or Anette Olzon [Nightwish]...

- because now it's even written on CDs I'm buying to describe the bands [like on the eponymous album of "After Forever": "best female fronted metal band from Benelux"] and I think it's not a good idea to use this term irl.

If you agree with these points or have your own reasons not to like it, feel free to join! :) [whatever the genre of music you are listening to ;)]

I can understand that this tag it's quite useful for some people [... for a lot of people ^_^] but if the reasons for which I created this group make you add a genre between female and metal, it's already a good thing! :)

Please, don't join the group just to say that you find the tag useful. If you come here and don't join or if you are using this tag, it's sufficient to show you don't agree. It's just annoying for me to kick you...

Female artists (lead singers especially) are really *not* that uncommon in metal these days. They might still be in the minority, but there are only two genders competing for the title to begin with so that doesn't say too much. Chicks have always been around to rock out and there are more than ever these days in all kinds of metal, its definitely ridiculous to make a genre off that fact alone. Then again, people call any band with a chick and some keyboards "goth" so, there ya go.

I agree, just because females are uncommon in metal (actually in music as a whole) doesn't mean that you have to tell us which bands contain female members.

my personal reason: Because it messes up my last.fm recommendations. I found a lot of good bands here but I keep hating the fact that it is nearly impossible to get all-male bands recommended in genres where the "female fronted" tag runs rampant.

I agree with you that is annoying when this term is used when the female in the band is not the leader, I already thought about that when I made the "connected artists".

I do use the term sometimes, I think of it as more of a description, bands like Nightwish, After Forever, Epica are fronted by a female despite having a male vocalist, the women is still the face of the band. However it does get annoying when people have to point their is a female in the band when she is not the leading lady like Tristania and Draconian. Also I'm against the 'Femme' metal as a genre, which is pretty the same thing.

After I created this group, I was wondering about a "Stop using useless tags" group! ^_^ I made a group about the "female fronted metal" because I listen to metal and I already seen this when I tried to tag [but I never tagged :p]. I feel "concerned" ^_^. And because for some people, a band is a "female fronted metal" one, for other people it isn't even if a female sing in it [because it's not "symphonic"]. And also because I saw the tag on the cd's I buy =D There are many reasons for which I created this group so it doesn't matter if it's pointless or not :/ [and anyway, it's too late ^_^].
