The SmartToons mailing list has been going strong for nearly a decade, providing a loosely defined environment in which people who value well-written lyrics can talk about all things music. This...

Hey, just FYI, it looks like our tag radio is running now (go to Listen, pick tag on the search thing, type in smarttoons, prepare to rock). Rather than being based on everything any of us are listening to, this will only play artists one of us has actively tagged as being of interest to the group. Could be fun!

OK, my whole solution to everything? Totally wrong. I just noticed there are in fact two columns with numbers in them. Ignore me, I don't sleep much these days.

Sorry that I missed the comment RE: Sylvian. He's done lots of things that sound different. I'll agree with Jodi that Secrets of the Beehive is a particularly amazing piece of work. But I've become more partial to some of his more recent work which has bits of electronica mixed in with his usual orchestral wonder. His 2cd retrospective Everything and Nothing really is phenomenal.

And this week we have artists at 1, 2, and 11. Which allows me to figure it out. The Beatles are at #1, then we have a 9-way tie for #2, making the next chart position available #11, at which we have like a nine-gazillion-way tie. That was seriously not self-evident!

Might be how many people on the list had this artist on their Top 10 Artists list for that week.

How odd. I thought perhaps it meant how many people had listened, rather than how many tracks, but the little tooltip thing leads me to believe I'm wrong. It does seem odd that among all of us, we didn't manage to listen to any artist for more than four tracks. Is anyone listening to the radio station? Maybe that is the explanation after all (I hope not, because that's a sucky idea!)

That was my understanding as well, Elizabeth, but (for example) in the week prior to 8/28 I know I listened to Old 97's more than 4 times, so that count over there is wrong even if none of you listened to them at all... hmm....

As I understand it, the Top Artists list is put together from everything each individual in this group listens to in a given week. So if I were to put a track by Boys II Men on repeat 24 hours a day, I could probably make them the #1 favorite ST artist, before you hunted me down and killed me I mean. (By the way, hi all - I've been AWOL for a bit.)

re: David Sylvian I have Secrets of the Beehive in my collection. Not a bad place to start. But, then again -- I'm not the expert that Brossmac is... :-)

Does anyone understand how the 'Top Artists' over there on the left works for the group? Is that music people listen to via the Group Radio? Or...?

Was going to ask brossmac about this but will post here using the more the merrier clause in SmartToons bylaws ... anybody have a David Sylvian recommendation or two? Seems like it might be a good fit based on a couple of things I've heard and my other tastes, but I have never made a purchase.

elizabeth - confirmed: songs won't scrobble unless you sync automatically with iTunes (I don't). I'll persevere, anyway. Dummy silent playlist is absurd, but should work. brad - it's not the music itself (currently Cronenberg soundtracks and bleak ambient stuff like Porn Sword Tobacco) but the doses. The same track repeated 400 times in a loop would screw up any stats... I'll keep trying.

OK, kidlets... I just tagged about a zillion artists with smarttoons, but in order to have a tag radio station the tag needs to have been used by more than one person (the nerve of them!). So if any of y'all could tag a few (you can tag people I've already tagged and it'll count, but it'd be cooler if you tagged your own 'pet' artists) that should get it started. Thanks!

The Clash and Dylan and Rancid... It's like my mantra.

Another thing you can do is tag artists you think are particularly group-friendly smarttoons- then you can play a radio station based on that tag (if enough people do that, it could be a nice alternative for those of us who wish to avoid my 35-minute John Coltrane tracks and such).

Hi guys! Nice to see everyone. Randi - Hem, really? I would have thought they were a tad quiet for you. See, we're learning things here already. So there's a forum here, and a page where you can recommend things to the group, and other stuff. Please experiment at will.

I too am surprised by how it says I have little in common with most of you, but maybe I will get some good recommendations out of this whole thing.
