What brought you to Racer X?

As there are currently no topics, I thought it wouldn't be wholly inappropriate to ask, What originally attracted you to Racer X? How did you find out about them, and what was the first song you heard? What do you like most about Racer X?

I first heard about Racer X when I read about Paul Gilbert, the first song I heard was Street Lethal, and although I really love the drumming, I think my favourite thing about Racer X is the pure rock attitude.

I first heard of Racer X from when I saw a small article on Paul Gilbert in Total Guitar, the word shred caught my eye. Downloaded Superheroes, realised the were fuckin amazing, went out and bought Technical Difficulties and Snowball Of Doom (live at the whiskey).

The drummer's absolutely amazing, I found out recently he drummed on Painkiller by Judas Priest, which is pretty damn great, but obviously the best thing about Racer X is Paul Gilbert. Even now I'm relearning the song Technical Difficulties, Slightly out of practice though!

I learned of Gilbert through my love of Buckethead. After hearing that he had a few lessons from Gilbert, I was interested and found out about Racer X, which I think is much more impressive than Gilbert's solo stuff.

i listened to the song technical difficulties at a friend's place about 5 years ago - i really liked it but didn't search for other racer x songs.

then about 2 yrs ago i borrowed Live Extreme Volume 1 from another friend and was hooked right away. that's the first time i heard jeff sing (he sounds great on Loud and clear). after that, i downloaded all racer x music and loved all of it.

now i'm a big racer x and paul gilbert fan.

  • I've heard Surgical Steel where Jeff was before the Racers, and got interested in his other projects. Also I read about them at some fansites of Judas Priest.

I like this band very much, I'm in love with Jeff's vox and some of Paul's riffs

Wow, we have someone who found the band through Jeff and Scott! I was beginning to think everyone was going to say Paul!

Let's see if we get anyone who hears about them through the Mars Volta!

  • I discovered Mr. Big. I found out that Gilbert quit the band for his solo career, so I was looking for some information about him in AllMusic.com and I saw that he's a member of a band called Racer X.
I downloaded the album Technical Difficulties and since then I still listen to Racer X. )

  • Me and my brother were watching a video of a jam between Portnoy, Gilbert and some other guys who they formed this band called something custard and then we started getting Gilbert's and Portnoy's stuff which got me into metal and progressive and of course... Racer X :)

I reckon Second Heat is their the best album

That would be Yellow Matter Custard

  • yupyup :)

  • I found out about Racer X through last.fm's similar artists thing. I had listened to Jason Becker, Marty Friedman and Cacophony and saw Racer X on all their similar artists tab so decided to try them. A guitarist friend of mine lent me his copy of Second Heat and I've been hooked ever since.

  • I was looking up some shred guitar players online, and i saw Gilbert's name. I had never heard of him, so I did a youtube search and Scarified was the first song i've heard and I was amazed by the melody. Then downloaded some stuff and now im hooked :).

I found Racer X through Pandora radio. I'm huge on Internet radio, and I had an 80's metal station that played "Loud and Clear" one day, and "Street Lethal" another day. I thought they were so amazing, I ordered Street Lethal and Second Heat from Amazon before too long. :)

i've seen gilbert's solo when he was in mr.big, then i have fallen in love with his guitar sound and i've found racer x !!!

  • Paul Gilbert. I had some of his solo albums, and I checked into his band. The rest is history.

  • Hello ,just joined the group!

Yeah ,like most of you, it was Paul Gilbert that brought me to Racer X... I heard he was teacher of Buckethead ,so i looked up and listened technical difficulties (maaaan was i hooked to that song and whole album, and i still am). Sooooo, i gathered all that i could find including Racer X, MR. Big and his solo albums ... and it is SCARY how good guitar player and teacher he is!

  • I went to see the new movie Speed Racer and kind of ended up googling for bands related to it in some way.

And the movie kicks ass too.

That's cool. I didn't expect to see anyone coming from that perspective. You didn't expect you'd be so lucky when you googled the name did you?
