It's hard to say, 'cos it's not obvious that the greatest progressive bands should have best bass guitarists.
I have no top list - all those listings are just subjective and nobody can predicate the best one. However, there's a couple bassists (non-evidents, I guess) admirable to me.

    1. I'm huge Queen fan, and the band played progressively only for short period at the beginning and later only from time to time (single and lone tracks on some albums) and, additionally, their bassist, John Deacon, was dozed by R&B inspirations and liked playing poppy...
and thank to that, we can hear his melodic passages on Queen 70s' stuff like The Millionaire Waltz or Liar (that I think everybody must get known!)

    2. What's less surprising - Criss Squire
Even if Yes had done only Roundabout and broken up, Criss would have been remembered up to date.

    3. Martin Turner - bassist, lead co-singer and key composer of Wishbone Ash
U remember Vas Dis? Outstanding performance!

I admire the work of John Wetton, Chris Squire, Mike Rutherford, Richard Sinclair and Geddy Lee.

I like the work of Holger Czukay, who plays the bass on Can

My third favourite bassist is Doug Ferguson of Camel. He may not have been the best technical bassist in the world, but he certainly had "the feel". In addition to fantastic basslines, he also brought stability and reliability to Camel, which they sorely needed... His work on "Rhayader", "Lady Fantasy" and "Air Born" is just fantastic, and he is one of the most underrated bassist in this world.

Very well put bro. Ferguson is special.

However, my all time favorite Prog bassist is, well, are: Geddy Lee and Chris Squire. When you listen to tracks like YYZ and Sound Chaser you start to wonder how could those guys be so good!

  • Roger Waters, not so much for his bass play, but for everything else he did, for all the amazing lyrics, and everything he did while in Pink Floyd. And from what I know of his life, i find him a great man as well.

Some would say that the glass is half empty. Others would say the glass is half full. Me? I'm just thirsty.
  • Oh and, Christopher Wolstenholme, for the virtuoso bass playing.

  • it's either beteween roger waters, ray shulman or chris squire for me. their bass lines are absolutley sublime!

  • I'm surprised there are very few Greg Lake votes. I really like Greg's work in King Crimson and ELP. Add in his great vocals, and you've got the whole package. Also, Tony Levin, and John Myung deserve credit here, too.
