• Female Vocalists?

So, upon my recent perusal of my music library, I noticed I have a grand total of ZERO female vocalists =O

Then I started thinking about prog and how I dont know any bands with female vox. Im sure there are some, but I dont know of any, so recommend me, my prog brothers!

(tbh, it dosent really have to be prog, just decent stuff)

Here's a few worth listening to

    Prog rock -
    Curved Air with sonia Kristina

    Psychedelia-
    Jefferson Airplane with Grace Slick

    Folk-rock-
    Fairport Convention with Sandy Denny

Beautiful voice either hard or soft-
All About Eve with Julianne Regan

    Straight-up-down-and-dirty-R&B Rock n' roll -
    Vinegar Joe with Elkie Brooks

    Much better bluesy -
Chicken Shack with Christine Perfect(later to become Christine McVie of the:

    Slightly more mainstream -
    Fleetwood Mac with ]Stevie Nicks)

OK so it's mostly from early 70's except All About Eve from the 80's, but its a few to start with.

    PS
You'll also find Sandy Denny on battle for evermore

  • A few more...

Random prog/alternative recommendations off the top of my head...

For Celtic prog, try Mellow Candle (Clodagh Simonds) - particularly "Swaddling Songs," Trees (Celia Humphris), and Shelagh McDonald. (And, of course, Renaissance with Annie Haslam.) Great French Zeuhl stuff: Magma (Stella Vander) and Eskaton (Paule Kleynnaert and Amara Tahir). You might also find Arsnova interesting - a Japanese band with a lot of Italian prog influence - and for those classic 4AD soundscapes there's the wonderful Cocteau Twins (Elizabeth Fraser).

    Enjoy!

There's Mostly Autumn for prog with (male and) female vocals.

The Gathering with Anneke van Giersbergen are a favorite of mine. They progressed from a gothic metal sound to something they call trip-rock. I think that How To Measure A Planet? and Black Light District have some prog flavor.

  • mmm...

    ESG
    Au Pairs
    Electrelane

    Slapp Happy

i just think that this girls don't need words, if isn't enought you can visit the Crazy Ladies group where you can find an amazing catalog of fantastic women...

  • Curved Air and Mostly Autumn have been addressed, so:

Tracey Hitchins - Quasar, Strangers on a Train, Landmarq
    Sandy Leigh - Solstice
Gilli Smyth - Gong, Mother Gong

Not prog, but worth checking out - Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance, This Mortal Coil), Kirsten Hersh (Throwing Muses, solo), Beth Gibbons (Portishead, solo), Tarja Turunen (Nightwish, solo), Siouxsie Sioux (Siouxsie and the Banshees), Annie Lennox (Eurythmics - their first album owes a lot to Krautrock - more than just Jaki's drumming), Kate Bush (solo, plus duets with Peter Gabriel and Roy Harper), Bjork (Sugarcubes, solo) any female vocals that William Orbit has a hand in producing and writing (he's behind the only really compelling tracks by Madonna, All Saints, Beth Orton and more).

About time I had another fix too!

  • I recommend the band Iona. They're kind of progressive and Joanne Hogg has a very beautiful voice IMO.

  • Venturia have a female singer, and rock. \m/

  • A british prog band I listen to called Magenta has a female vocalist. Magenta, in short, is an incredible band. Yessish in a way. Definitely a throwback to to 70's prog.

  • OK I'm waiting for the torrent of abuse - try Rush - after all, geddy Lee sounds a bit like a girl :)
Actually, Magenta's great, but be careful 'cos there's a Euro-techno-house band of the same name. You wouldn't want to get confused.

Love peace and truth incorporated for all who seek
  • Yeah I realized that after I posted when I went to look up them up here. They have a myspace though, which is how I was introduced to them.

    Sinead O'Connor
    Sleater-Kinney
    Metric
    Poe
    The Pixies (sometimes XD)
    Nightwish
    Jarboe (especially Neurosis and Jarboe
The Pogues (Fairytale of new York has some nice vocals to it :D)

If you think about it, there are plenty of 70's groups that have a somewhat girly voiced vocalist :P

Anyway, if you like Anekdoten, Riverside and bands with that dark and calm mood, try Paatos.

My favorite at the moment is Nil. Very intense and sexy french vocals on top of some incredible symphonic prog, followed by swedish Paatos.

Also worth mentioning are Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Bjork, IZZ (some songs), Kaipa (some songs), Gong (some songs), Portishead, White Willow, The Gathering, Iona, Nightwish...

I'll second what gorecki_md said, Marcela Bovio is great!
And that's coming from someone who doesn't favour female vocals much.

Well, if you don't mind prog rock in Portuguese, listen to Bacamarte.
Os Mutantes is also nice, but it's more psycedelic than prog.
If you want to move away from rock, listen to Elis Regina, she generally sings bossa nova.

Yes, it's all in portuguese, but it's worth a shot =)

Sorry, I don't know why, but I usually can't stand female voices in rock music...

You may know what I don't know
But not that I don't know it
So you will have to tell me all
