    Progressive Rock Epics Playlist

If you were to make up a playlist of epic prog rock songs, which would you be likely to put on?

  • epic songs.

    1.)"The Battle of Epping Forest"-Genesis
    2.)"Close to the Edge"-Yes
    3.)"Svefn-g-Englar"-Sigur Ros
4.)"In the Court of the Crimson King"-King Crimson
    5.)"The Rain Song"-Led Zeppelin
6.)"Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt"-The Mars Volta
    7.)"Xanadu"-Rush
8.)"Shine on You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-IX)-Pink Floyd
9.)"In the Dead of Night/By the Light of Day"-UK
    10.)"Heart of the Sunrise"-Yes
    11.)"Fracture"-King Crimson
    12.)"Suppers Ready"-Genesis

I know these are all sort of obvious, but these songs are some of the best prog epics, in my opinion.

  • E,L&P

I think there must be Karn Evil 9 in this list

  • yes.

I completely forgot one of the greats.

I screwed that one up bigtime...

Gentle Giant - Excerpts From Octopus

Genesis - The Battle Of Epping Forest
    Genesis - The Cinema Show
    King Crimson - Moonchild

    Koenjihyakkei - Lussesogi Zomn
    Opeth - Advent
    Opeth - Black Rose Immortal

The Flower Kings - World Of Adventure
    Utopia - Utopia Theme
    Wobbler - Clair Obscur
    Wobbler - Hinterland
    Wobbler - Rubato Industry
Yes - And You And I
    Yes - Dreamtime
Yes - Close To The Edge
Yes - Heart Of The Sunrise
Yes - The Gates Of Delirium
Yes - The Revealing Science Of God (Dance Of The Dawn)

If you count Gentle Giant's "Memories Of Old Days" and "Nothing At All", King Crimson's "Elektrik" and Dün's "Arrakis" as epics, they are of course in my list too.

You may know what I don't know
But not that I don't know it
So you will have to tell me all

    Gentle Giant - Knots

    Oh yes, definitely Grendel.

but I think everyone is forgetting...

    2112

  • For me, various ones that have already been mentioned, but also:

The Doors - The End (if you count it as a prog epic which I guess it isn't)
The Mars Volta - Cassandra Gemini
Genesis - All of them, especially invisible touch
    Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells
Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother
    Marillion - Invisible Man

  • Most of them have been said, but I'd like to add Octavarium and Learning To Live by Dream Theater.

  • I just want to add Goblin, the Italian prog band who did the soundtrack for Dawn of the Dead... and for something a little different, Fiery Furnaces' album "Bitter Tea" begins with at least 5 solid psychedelic tracks. SSoooo good.

I'd like to nominate Queen's "The Prophet Song" but it only clocks in at 8:21

    Dire Straits - Telegraph Road
    Uriah Heep - Salisbury
    Television - Marquee Moon
Bruce Springsteen - New York City Serenade
    Supertramp - Fool's Overture
I don't know if Meat Loaf fits the style, but Bat Out of Hell is certainly epic.
    Lou Reed - Street Hassle
Smashing Pumpkins - Porcelina of the Vast Oceans (whoops, only 9:21)
Iron Butterfly - In a Gadda Da Vida
    Pink Floyd - Dogs
Pulp - The Day after the Revolution
    Jethro Tull - My God
Gong - The Isle of Everywhere
Deep Purple - Child in Time
Led Zeppelin - Achilles Last Stand
    Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird
Guns N Roses - November Rain
The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again

Some of these artists are probably stretching the definition of prog-rock, but I think the musical styles fit for these tracks.
