krautrock and zeuhl forever. Anyone here listen to Amon Duul II? I recommend the albums Yeti and Tanz Der Lemminge, and also the band Can, and their albums Tago Mago and Ege Bamyasi. If you're a prog fan you will go listen to those bands IMMEDIATLY.

so it's come to this: my source are PA: Zeuhl: The genre is a mixture of musical genres like Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Modernism and Fusion. Common elements: oppressive or discipline-conveying feel, marching themes, throbbing bass, an ethereal piano or Rhodes piano, and brass instruments. RIO: the first half of this page: http://www.progarchives.com/subgenre.asp?style=36 .zeuhl has a quite unique sound and is easily recognizable (marching themes, opera-shamanistic influenced vocal style) and rio does not really. rio sounds more like either: a mix of different music genres + rock music + classic/modern songwriting, at least that's what I've experienced so far (in extremis, Samlas' K**** album, a quick listen of univers zero and art zoyd and this "hammer of god" band from a scandinavian country (two words with lots of As in them)). (+magma, eskaton, beefheart, zappa, weidorje, universal totem orchestra and more). my point is: magma != rio and rio != anti punk but rather anti all. :))

Rock in Opposition (RIO) is the prog resistance around 1976-77 when punk took over, and Magma somehow fit into that genre.

magma is zeuhl, nothing else. ;) calling magma rio could only be an act of laziness or an attempt to small down the wide world of genres. i will check out leg end, though. thank you.

Leg End for sure, other RIOs will be anything by Univers Zero, and Magma is called RIO by many so I guess something by Magma, preferrably Kobaia, Mekanikal Destruktiwh Kommandoh, or Attahk.
