    It's always easier to form a band when it's not your first. Painting By Numbers has been a recurring project in the head of its architects long before it actually took shape in autumn 2008.

    Antoine Ollivier (Dawnshape) and Gregory Hoepffner (Radius System, Time to Burn, Template) always felt their belonging groups didn't let them experiment as much as they wanted. Soon joined by bandmate Axel Dallou (Radius System), the trio didn't ask too many questions and quickly started making noise, in a language they didn't even speak : improvisation.

    Drums, Guitar, Bass, Synth, Samplers, and endless possibilities : Painting By Numbers are devoted to pushing the standards further, fight against their own musical habits, and try to find the right balance between sonic experimentation and pure groove pleasure.

    Geschichte:

    Nach großen Erfolgen mit seiner Band "Manfred Mann" in den 1960er-Jahren gründete Manfred Mann 1971 zusammen mit Colin Pattenden, Chris Slade und Mick Rogers seine Earth Band.
    Das erste Album, das schlicht unter dem Titel Manfred Mann's Earth Band erschien, zeigt noch deutliche Einflüsse aus Manns R&B-Zeit in den 1960er-Jahren. Der Stil ist am ehesten als Blues Rock zu beschreiben, allerdings finden sich deutliche Anleihen beim Jazz Rock (Miles Davis' Album In a Silent Way hatte 1969 für den Brückenschlag zwischen Jazz und Rock gesorgt), Rythm & Blues und experimenteller Musik. Die Songs sind zum Teil selbst geschrieben, zum Teil gecovert. Mit Please Mrs Henry findet sich auf dem Album auch das erste Bob Dylan-Cover der Earth Band, in spätere Konzert-Setlists sollte es aber nur Captain Bobby Stout schaffen, geschrieben von Lane Tietgen, der der Earth Band 1978 mit Marthas Madman einen jahrzehntelangen Konzert-Klassiker liefern sollte.
    1972 folgt mit Glorified Magnified das zweite Album, das bereits deutlich mehr in Richtung des Stils weist, der für die Earth Band später markant werden sollte: Lange, rhythmisch ausgefeilte Instrumentalteile. Die Basis bilden überwiegend selbstgeschriebe Songs, die Mann zusammen mit Ko-Produzent Dave Hadfield komponierte. Außerdem findet sich auf dem Album eine Cover-Version des Dylan-Klassikers It's All Over Now Baby Blue.
    Im Folgejahr erschien mit Messin' ein Album, das sich wieder zunehmend am Blues Rock orientierte. Den namensgebende Song hatte Mann noch vor Gründung der Earth Band zusammen mit Mike Hugg für deren damalige Band Chapter III geschrieben. Unüberhörbar sind aber auch die musikalischen Anleihen von den beiden Vorgängeralben.
    Ebenfalls 1973 erscheint das vierte Album der Band, Solar Fire, mit dem die Band in eine neue musikalische Phase eintritt: Das Album stellt eine Rock-Adaption von Gustav Holsts Orchestersuite Die Planeten dar. Als Eröffnungsstück dient ein aufwändiges Arrangement des Stückes Father of Day, Father of Night von Bob Dylan. Die Musik ist am ehesten dem Progressive Rock zuzuordnen, die Einflüsse von Bands wie Emerson, Lake and Palmer und Yes sind unüberhörbar. Der Stil der Band hat sich entscheidend verändert. Signifikant sind nun lange, von Orgel, Mini Moog und E-Gitarre bestimmte Instrumentalteile. Das Markenzeichen der Earth Band wird ab diesem Zeitpunkt immer mehr, Kompositionen anderer Künstler zu covern und ihnen ihren eigenen unverwechselbaren Bandsound zu verleihen.
    Das folgende Album The Good Earth (1974) führt das mit Solar Fire aufgenommene Konzept konsequent fort. Dem mit dem Vorgängeralbum aufgegriffenen kunstvollen Sound werden erneut Blues Rock-Anleihen beigemischt. Mit I'll Be Gone und Launching Place covert die Earth Band A- und B-Seite einer Single der australischen Band Spectrum, die in ihrem Heimatland in den 1970er Jahren erfolgreich war.
    Das sechste Album der Band, das 1975 erscheint, Nightingales and Bombers, enthält mit Spirits in the Night das erste Bruce Springsteen-Cover der Earth Band. Der Sound des Albums folgt dem Titel dieses Songs und enthält durchweg ein düsteres und geheimnisvolles Flair. Solistisch dominiert Manfred Mann's Mini Moog, den er von diesem Zeitpunkt an verstärkt mit Resonanzfilter nutzt. Besonders gut zu hören ist dies in den Instrumental-Stücken As Above so Below und Crossfade.
    1976 kommt es zu großen Veränderungen: Sänger und Gitarrist Mick Rogers verlässt die Band. Ihn ersetzt Chris Thompson als Sänger und Dave Flett an der Gitarre. Dem personellen Umbruch sollte langsam ein musikalischer Stilwechsel folgen. Zwar sollte das musikalische Erbe von Solar Fire bis in die 1980er Jahre als Kern des Bandsounds erhalten bleiben, man wendet sich aber zunehmend dem Mainstream zu.
    Die größten kommerziellen Erfolge folgen für Manfred Mann's Earth Band 1976 und 1978 mit den Alben The Roaring Silence und Watch. Auf diesen Platten finden sich Songs wie Blinded by the Light (ein weiteres Springsteen-Cover) und Davy's on the Road again, die international zu Chart-Hits wurden. Blinded by the Light erreichte Platz 1 der Single Charts in den USA.
    Auch in den Folgejahren bleibt die Band kommerziell erfolgreich. Die Alben Angel Station (1979), Chance (1980) und Somewhere in Afrika (1982) neigen zunehmend zur Pop-Musik. Chance enthält das Springsteen-Cover For You und Somewhere in Afrika den Police-Song Demolition Man. Bereits 1979 hatte mit Chris Slade das letzte Mitglied von Manns ursprünglicher Formation die Band verlassen. Mit ihm ging auch Lead-Gitarrist Dave Flett. Für diese kamen Steve Waller (Gitarre) und John Lingwood (Schlagzeug) neu in die Band.
    1983 erscheint ein Konzert in Budapest als LP unter dem Namen Budapest Live. Es enthält (mit Ausnahme von Spirits in the Night vom Nightingales and Bombers-Album) ausschließlich Songs aus der kommerziell erfolgreichen Phase seit 1978.
    Nach 1983 wird es still um die Earth Band. Erst 1986 erscheint mit Criminal Tango ein neues Album, auf dem wieder Mick Rogers mitwirkt. 1987 folgt Masque, das eine Neuaufnahme des Songs Joybringer enthält, welcher als Single zum Solar Fire-Album der erste kommerzielle Erfolg für die Earth Band war. Außerdem wirkt Maggie Ryder als Sängerin mit und ersetzt Chris Thompson, der sich auf seine Solo-Karriere konzentriert und für John Farnham unter anderem den Welthit You're the voice schreibt. Beide Alben erreichen jedoch nicht mehr die Verkaufszahlen der Vorgänger. 1988 löst sich die Earth Band auf.
    1992 schaffte es Manfred Mann, die Band mit Mick Rogers neu zu formieren. Die 1990er Jahre waren hauptsächlich von Tourneen und Live-Auftritten geprägt, bei denen die Sänger Noel McCalla und Chris Thompson den Sound der Band ergänzten. In der Folge wurden in den 1990er Jahren ein neues Studio- und ein Livealbum (Soft Vengeance, 1996 und Mann Alive, 1998) veröffentlicht. Chris Thompson verließ die Band nach Mann Alive erneut.
    Im Jahr 2004 veröffentlichte Manfred Mann erneut ein Studioalbum mit dem Namen 2006, in dem er neue musikalische Wege geht und auf dem er sich selbst den neuen Alias "Manfred Mann '06" gibt, um sich von seiner bisherigen Arbeit mit MMEB für dieses Projekt abzugrenzen. Der Name ist nach seiner eigenen Aussage als Witz gemeint: Die CD erschien in allen Ländern in den Jahren 2004 und 2005. Auf dem Album, welches unter Manfred Mann and Earth Band erschien, ist neben den damaligen Bandmitgliedern auch Chris Thompson zu hören. Außerdem hat der Rapper Thomas D. zwei Gastauftritte.
    Manfred Mann's Earth Band tritt vor allem in Mitteleuropa weiter regelmäßig auf. Die Besetzung entspricht der Formation aus den 90er Jahren, zuletzt wechselte aber mehrmals der Schlagzeuger. Seit 2007 sitzt Jimmy Copley am Schlagzeug. 2009 kündigt Manfred Mann ein Soloalbum an auf dem verschiedenen Künstler mitwirken. Mick Rogers kündigt sein Soloalbum ebenfalls an. The Guitarist soll die neue Scheibe heißen.
    Noel McCalla hat die Band im Oktober 2009 verlassen. Für ihn wurde kam als neuer Lead-Sänger Peter Cox in die Band.

Hailing from opposite ends of Australia, Perth's Tangled Thoughts of Leaving and Sydney's sleepmakeswaves are proud to present you with a shiny new split LP. It's a record from two bands that are very different yet one that finds an equilibrium between the seemingly disparate tendencies of the two groups. Although both bands find common ground in their latent electronic influences, sleepmakeswaves marry these ideas to their characteristic brand of energetic and uplifting instrumental rock while Tangled Thoughts of Leaving pursue a relentlessly improvisatory, innovative path. The results are more foreboding yet no less spectacular, and are all the more reason to watch for their debut full lengths, slated for 2010.

    Um… holy shit. That set was too fucking good for words! The Eppards are so in sync… I can’t wait for the weekend of December 3rd, 4th & 5th!!! Best “Paint By Number” I’ve ever heard. Stories of how they grew up around the corner from the venue brought me back to the first time I saw Joey solo, 4 1/2 years ago at that very spot - when it was the Forum.

    I really wish someone could’ve recorded it. Could be the best Eppard Brothers performance - but I can’t let myself say that it was. Each one holds a special nostalgic place in my heart. Can’t be objective… however, I couldn’t peel myself away to take any video or photos. They sounded too damn good!

    No Eppard Brothers show ceases to be magical! And The Ricochet and Cosmonaut were fuckin’ wicked too. I look forward to hearing and seeing more from them both.

    April 18, 2008 - Backstage Studio Productions in Kingston, NY - with DENT (Joe Stote & Gartdrumm) and Astronauts. Billy Riker, Daniel Grimsland, CJB, Dave Daw all sat in at some point or another. Even Joe Stote joined in on one song!

    June 08, 2008 - The Basement in Kingston, NY - with Instant Asshole, Dent, Dead Unicorn. Despite a gruesome skateboarding accident, Uncle John still performed with his band, Instant Asshole.     Soundtrack is a song from my album "Outskirt" (2008); I took St. Petersburg Winter Palace - left empty when Nicholas II and imperial family moved to Alexander Palace - as a hint to depict 1905 russian Bloody Sunday.

    "Bloody Sunday (Russian: Кровавое воскресенье) was an incident on January 22 [O.S. January 9] 1905 in St. Petersburg, Russia, where unarmed, peaceful demonstrators marching to present a petition to Tsar Nicholas II were gunned down by the Imperial Guard. The march was organized by Father Gapon, who had collaborated with Sergei Zubatov of the Okhrana, the Tsarist secret police, to create workers' organizations and thus considered by some to be its agent provocateur. Bloody Sunday was an event with grave consequences for the Tsarist regime, as the disregard for ordinary people shown by the massacre undermined support for the state."

    Track is about a great female historical figure, Joan of Arc, juxtaposed to middle east singers, and a quirky muezzin.
    I worked with paint effects on some footages about Crusades, Jeanne d'Arc and east europe (looking like a little middle east) singers. Track is, briefly, about the juxtaposition of western guitar arpeggios and middle east vocals.

    My intention was putting together women from both sides in Cusades: a western woman, the "étoile" in this case, which dared to act like a male soldier in a demented inquisition environment; and docile eastern singers. They got no moments of glory followed by dying on a pyre, but a continuous subordination, so actually it's a pondering about women's troubles in western or eastern world. Different ways and degrees of cruelty, same patriarchism.

    Clip simply follow this scheme and adds a movie picture support. I needed just a couple of days to finish it as it's a "punk" expression in videomaking. This time I tried to catch the result on the fly, without exceeding in refurbishing every single frame. Not a draft, but a quicker language. And a different subject, it wasn't the right place to unleash some After Effects frenzy quirknesses. At the opposite, I worked on slow motion footages, to achieve a relaxed but a little gloomy mood.

    I found quite cruel in the last sequence to put side by side Jeanne d'Arc in flames and a smiling singer. It was not intended as a revenge of muslim on a christian, but the cruelty in life itself. While one is dying, the other is enjoying his art.

    This Is My Normal State is a post-rock/ambient band from Bristol, South West England. Formed in October 2008, the band has just finished recording its debut EP: Angel Falls ++ (October 2009).

On this latest Citadel release, D’Anthologie 2 - Crosses or Crowns?, you’ll again find soft or loud, fast or slow, clean or dirty, just like always with Citadel songs - but the true ‘spectacle’ of this Citadel album is not purely the song diversity; it’s also the horn sections, violin, sax, flute & tuba leads, string sections, accordion, melodic percussion, gongs, sitar, timpani & massive homage to the trademark organs, pianos, keys & synths of Hammond, Yamaha, Roland, Fender, Korg, Moog…

    October 27th, 2009 3's releasing their sixth record- Revisions - on Metal Blade Records. Earlier this week they filmed the first video for it, "Rabid Animals" with tons of friends.
