What was your first progressive metal band?

  • Fates Warning's Parallels for both, although I suppose it was Images & Words and Energetic Disassembly that drove me to explore a lot further.

I guess it was Queensrÿche, but I'm not sure.

  • My first "progressive" artist was Peter Gabriel -- with his album So, but I got in with Ayreon.
Both Peter and Anthony A. Lucassen are great, I suppose.

  • mine was Dream Theater, followed by Symphony X and Adagio. :)

  • Only prog metal remembrance

The only prog metal remembrance has been Dream Theater's awake, and that was bloody 9 years back when any knowledge about genres were amiss in me, and neither was lastfm around. Sadly couldnt follow up with other bands of the kind. Then came huge gaps huge gaaaps

Mine was Tool. I was at a friends place when 10 000 days came on and it absolutely blew my mind. Haven't looked back since.

  • Well, Metallica's '...And Justice For All' essentially kick-started my love for progressive music, but they certainly aren't a progressive band.

What was my first progressive metal band? Probably Opeth.

  • Opeth, their album "Blackwater Park". I was shocked by this masterpiece!

Dream Theater. They weren't just my first prog band, but actually my first metal band, several years ago back in high school.

  • I'm not sure whether it's Dream Theater or Opeth: Space-Dye Vest or Face of Melinda. But with a high possibility it's Dream Theater I guess.

    Accidental doublepost, please delete.

  • Symphony X. The fact that Symphony X was the first metal band I ever got into probably explains why power and prog metal are my two favorite genres, though I've branched into plenty of others. But around the same time I was also getting into Dream Theater, Pain of Salvation and dabbling in Opeth.
