just joined the ground and was reading through some bands listed here and am wondering why so may early punk bands are listed as "post punk".

I don't want to start a war; just a conversation.

I've never thought "post punk" was a good enough brand for most of these bands.

"post punk" implies that they followed, when the opposite of that is usually the case.

wire, joy division, talking heads, the cure, devo...

talking heads was playing psycho killer in 1974 and it was light years ahead of its time and done before ramones-punk arrived on the scene.

television. the ramones say they invented punk while admitting that they loved going to cbgbs to watch television. daft.

devo was also WAY before post punk. they were jaw-dropping in 1973 and pre-dated the actual onset of sex pistols-style punk by at least 2 years... so they couldn't be "post punk".

early cure was nothing like post punk - and everything like it. they started in 1973 and defined "alternative punk" ...what ever that means.

wire was serious punk, but they were leaders. pink flag changed too much to be called "post" anything.

joy division was hardly listening to punk when they started. they were grooving on david bowie. how could they any thing other than strict punk?

    my list:

    cocteau twins
    red lorry yellow lorry
    psychedelic furs
    sonic youth
    dif juz
    japan
    joy division
    the the
    matt johnson
    television
    the b-52's
    the cure
    the smiths
    tones on tail
    wire
    the wolfgang press
    x-ray spex
