Relatively UNKNOWN Bands...

True, there are some weaker parts where the music seems to be struggling to find its momentum ... and then there are some brilliant parts which show how good this band can be. Overall I still consider it to be very good, however our rating system is not perfect - as already mentioned before there seems to be a big gap between "Average" and "Excellent" - for me this is much more than an "average" album so I had to go with "excellent" - objectively speaking it's somewhere between "good" and "very good" ...

People should feel free to express that an album falls between the main ratings, eg ABOVE AVERAGE if that's more appropriate than the AVERAGE or EXCELLENT.

  • Have a listen at this one...Konchordat is based in Margate in the East Kent area of England, heralding a new Canterbury sound for the 21st century. Konchordat's debut album 'English Ghosts' was released on Monday 16th November 2009. Nick Magnus ( ex Steve Hackett band) mastered the album. http://www.konchordat.com

OK, this is hardly an UNKNOWN band but while 2010 gets off to a slow start I've been exploring the Proto Prog era of the late 60s. Just listened to The Crazy World of Arthur Brown from 1968 for the very first time. I was very familiar with the track Fire! but nothing else on this album. Well, all I can say is WOW - it just blows me away... the energy on show is incredible and some great hammond sounds throughout the album. Surely an album all PRANCErs would enjoy, if they don't already?? Album streamable on LastFM.

  • While we're on the subject of Arthur Brown, can I throw in a plug for Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come's Journey? They did a couple of other albums too, but this is the one that I know - I've only got this on tape somewhere and must re-buy it, but it's well worth a listen in my view.

List.fm is not the same thing at all
  • And I've only discovered today Melting Euphoria's 1997 album Inside the Gardens of the Mind. Maybe everyone else already knows them - I see that Roy scrobbled the album back last July - but I think they deserve a wide audience. Described as 'spacey psych-rockers' and 'music Inspired by Pink Floyd & Hawkwind' (the title of a 2008 compliation).

List.fm is not the same thing at all
  • I do have an album of theirs............ and I would compare them to the Ozric Tentacles..... as you say - spacey psych -rockers! :))) Its good stuff......

grooving with the beat box........wah wah wah :)

Another band I would like to recommend is Mermaid Kiss. Their best work is Etarlis which can be purchased directly from the band's website.
Moreover, the sound quality on this album is simply breathtaking - the open, airy sound with ethereal vocals floating above makes this the perfect audiophile test CD, one I like to use for testing good quality sound systems.

    Highly recommended!

I'll add my own recommendation here. By far, the most over looked Progger I've found recently is a guy called Steve Unruh. He's mainly a solo guy who produces his own material. He's a virtuoso on many instruments and the music is tremendously immediate and vibrant. Mainly acoustic instruments, and guitar oriented.

Lots of demos to download from his site: http://steveunruh.com/index.html

Out of the Ashes would be the album I'd recommend starting with. Brilliant Prog.

He also has a new electric rock band called Resistor. Their debut was ouststanding. Check out the track Reincarnation at http://www.myspace.com/resistorband for a great example out their output. It builds and builds and sends shivers down my spine :)

    Enjoy!

    Mark

I fully agree with Mark on this. Steve Unruh is brilliant and Out of the Ashes is one of the best albums I've ever heard.

I have to check Resistor yet, but I am almost sure I will like it.

Agreed, I recommend their last album, Domain of Oblivion. Very nice concept album.

There's this spanish band called Ebbandflow. They do a very impressive uptempo pop rock music with lots of jazz and world music influences and some prog moments in great arrangements, mixing acoustic and electric instruments with an outstanding female singer.

No page on last.fm, but you can check them at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/ebbandflowmusic There are some clips from the album called "The Mask" and you can find the songs to buy

  • DEFINATELY unknown band "Framauro".
    Before "Millenium", there was "Framauro".
Multi-instrumentalist, Ryszard Kramarski, quite literally recorded demos in his bedroom (later to officially be released as bootlegs) in Krakow, Poland.
Feeling that his vision needed to be fully realized, he brought on his cousins Stach Kramarsk and Tomasz Pabian to solidify the lineup.
Together at full strength they recorded "Etermedia" in ´98.
Stands to reason they be compared to fellow countrymen "Collage", the cornerstone of their sound has been described as ethereal Progressive Rock with melodic guitars, symphonic/celestial 60's style keyboards, bass, drums and vocals (sung in Polish).
Changes were in store for "Framauro", however, says Kramarski, "It was June 1999 and a year passed since the release of the album.
After my friends suggestions I decided to hire a professional studio and record the second album."
Subsequently, he also went on to establish Lynx Music.
At which point "Framauro" became the band we know today: "Millenium".

  • Instrumental Ambient Prog Rock to chill out needed? "Fonya" is the musical pseudonym for Chris Fournier, who creates solo instrumental electronic/progressive rock of cosmically symphonic proportions. Five of Seven albums are available at http://www.mindawn.com Check out http://www.fonya.com

  • Just discovering a Brazilian Prog Rock band called "John Armless Project" who have release three records so far and are currently working on another one.
Will upload some videos here: http://www.lastfm.de/music/John+Armless+Project
Check out their homepage for more:

People who are interested in Pink Floyd, Genesis or Camel should take your seat and enjoy really great music!

  • Check http://www.myspace.com/rc2prog to find out what RC2 sounds like...
For me, somewhere between Symphonic and Neo Prog. Good stuff!

  • Can't believe that there are so many good Prog bands in Poland! ;-)
Just discovered another one called Pinkroom.
The released their debut album "Psychosolstice" in December '09.
    Please check out

    and

to find out more about the band.

  • Right in time for the release of their DVD "Ephemeral Live" i want to keep an eye on French female fronted Symphonic Prog band Sensitive To Light.

Not only the talented musicians and the passionated singing of Jenny Lewis, but the use of a saxophone makes this band some kind of unique.

    Almost Human (2006)

Both those albums have some excellent material on them, but not enough to satisfy me overall. Almost Human is the better of the two IMO.

  • And another one to go...

Ajalon is a Progressive Rock trio from Seattle Washington. Their music is on the more melodic side of the prog-rock spectrum. If you think you'd like solid, song-oriented melodic rock, played with occasional nods to Marillion, Yes, Genesis, & The Moody Blues - then you should be in quite comfortable territory here. ( from http://www.myspace.com/ajalonband )

On their third record "This Good Place" (2009) are some well known musical guests to find, like Rick Wakeman, Neal Morse,...

    I've been impressed by....

    A Torn Mind

    2. Edge Of The World is the only full track available here on Last but there are more of the 5 tracks on their debut EP available on other sites linked to their web page.

I don't like to make comparisons to other bands, in many cases such comparisons are complimentary to neither the original nor the new. Suffice to say that you will recognise a few influences but with quite a few touches of their own. Worth a listen

    Cheers

I've been searching this thread and didn't see anyone mentioning this band. If so, my apologies.

    I like them too.

  • Picked this up from a previous thread on best prog drummers - Furio Chirico

Furio is a very impressive prog/fusion drummer from Italy. Highly recommended generally but his work with Arti E Mestieri particularly so.
