Numbers stations are shortwave radio broadcasts, the origins of which have never officially been established. It has been suggested that these broadcasts are to provide information to spies. They have subsequently caused interest and confusion to the general public when being accidently picked up by their shortwave radios.

A broadcast often contains an artificial voice reciting a sequence of letters, words or numbers. Often broadcasts contain female voices. Sometimes it is the voice of a child.

Frequently the streams are punctuated by short bursts of melody or longer passages of music. For example The Lincolnshire Poacher plays the first two bars of the English folk song “The Lincolnshire Poacher” before a female voice recites a sting of numbers. Others such as the Iran/Iraq Jamming Efficacy Testing [E3] broadcast dispense with music and include short bursts of sound accompanying spoken numbers.

No government or broadcaster has acknowledged broadcasting a numbers station. Many believed that the stations were a relic of the Cold War. However numbers station activity has continued and possibly increased since the 1990s.

A compilation of numbers station recordings complied by Akin Fernandez was released as The Conet Project in 1997.

Samples have appeared on recordings by musicians such as Wilco, Boards of Canada, Porcupine Tree, The Besnard Lakes and The Moscow Coup Attempt and provided inspiration for other artists. Samples have also featured in movies such as Vanilla Sky.

It is unwise to listen to numbers stations before attempting to sleep.
